Subject: National Moment of Silence |
Bible Note: Thank you, Makarios, for the reminder that this time, like all times, is a fitting time to pray to Almighty God. There was a time, not so long ago and within memory of most of us, when the "official" language would have been a "National moment of prayer" instead of a "National moment of silence." Prayer is infinitely more effectual than mere silence. It is, in fact, a time for Christians to speak out, not merely to be silent, in unision to our Creator, our God, our Lord, and our Savior in prayer without ceasing for this country that once embraced so fervently the ideology that we are one nation under God and that it has become a nation among nations because it was founded solidly upon a firm and abiding faith in the absolute assurance of the providential care and guidance of God. Our words "God bless America" are diluted and diminished by the grim reality that we have ruled God out of our classrooms and to an alarming degree out of our public life. There is a disturbing and hypocritical dichotomy between our affirmation of freedom and justice for all on the one hand -- and our embracing the idea of the sanctity of life in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the tragedy of a year ago -- and the pandemic murder of millions of helpless children yet unborn. Between our words of "In God we trust" and our open acceptance of a lifestyle that we call an "alternate sexual orientation" and which God clearly calls "perversion." Between our sanction of the godless theory of evolution routintely being taught in our schools as scientific truth and our prohibition of divine creationism being taught at all. It is a good time to remember the thousands whose lives were snuffed away on 9/11 a year ago today and their families who have been left behind to grieve and mourn. It is also a good time to remember that but for the goodness and mercy of God this nation or any nation cannot long endure. If united we stand as one nation, to continue and to endure we must stand as one nation UNDER GOD. --Hank |
