NASB	Genesis 46:34 you shall say, 'Your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,' that you may live in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is loathsome to the Egyptians."
AMPLIFIED 2015	Genesis 46:34 you shall say, 'Your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth until now, both we and our fathers [before us],' in order that you may live [separately and securely] in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is repulsive to the Egyptians."

Bible Question: Genesis 46:28-34 Why did Joseph tell his family that they should tell the Pharaoh that they were shepherds, so that they could live in Goshen? Why is Goshen chosen by the Israel family to live in?

Bible Answer: Greetings!

Gen. 46:34 provides the answer to this question.

Shepherds were detested by the Egyptians and forced to live away from the rest of the Egyptians in Goshen.

This also served the added purpose of keeping the people of Israel separate from the Egyptians, thus allowing them to retain their culture and faith.
