NASB | Genesis 43:32 So they served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is loathsome to the Egyptians. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 43:32 So the servants served Joseph by himself [in honor of his rank], and his brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because [according to custom] the Egyptians could not eat food with the Hebrews, for that is loathsome to the Egyptians. |
Bible Question: The Egyptians clearly thought that shepherds were loathsome (Gen. 46:34), and the Israelites were shepherds. However, was this the primary reason why Egyptians refused to even eat bread with the Israelites in Gen. 43:32? |
Bible Answer: Nolan, Maybe Tow'ebah (Strong's 08441) is the word in Hebrew. It is used in "ritual" or "ethical" sense. The Jews did not go into see Pilate, because they wanted to eat the Passover. Some early Christians did not eat idol meat, much less go into the pagan temples for a sound reason on their part. However, thru history, we have seen "ritual" or "ethical" reasons for doing horrible things to others. Shepherds are considered second-class citizens by some. In the Old West, the ranchers did, even tho the sheep provided clothes and food. Steve |
