NASB | Genesis 4:24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold." |

Bible Question: What, if anything, (besides delusions of grandeur) gave Lamech authority to claim 11X the avengement God proclaimed for Cain? |
Bible Answer: Hi, jholler... As I recall, scholars have suggested that this statement was intended to be a form of assurance to quell the fears of his wives. From this perspective it is thought that the murders were some kind of self-defense. The reasoning was that if Cain killed his brother and received divine protection, then Lamech's unintentional killing would warrant even greater protection. Of course, one could also simply take this statement as a scoffer and braggart. In Him, Doc |
