Subject: Twins? |
Bible Note: Dear Jer, The KJV translators did a pretty good job of translating the sense of the Hebrew into English. Hebrew and English are more similar to one another than is Greek and English. The KJV translators apparently showed some preferences for the way the Geneva translation was done. It also reflects the sense of the Hebrew quite well here: "Afterwarde the man knewe Heuah his wife, which conceiued and bare Kain, and said, I haue obteined a man by the Lord. And againe she brought foorth his brother Habel, and Habel was a keeper of sheepe, and Kain was a tiller of the ground." (Genesis 4:1-2 Geneva) In Jewish tradition there is the belief that both Cain and Abel had paternal twin sisters. I am just as dubious about that as I would be of your grammatical circumlocutions. Often it is useful to go back to commentators to see how they have treated a passage. After all, the Holy Spirit has been working in the lives of Bible students for quite some time. This is helpful since it prevents us from wandering off into strange interpretations. In Him, Doc |
