NASB | Genesis 32:24 Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 32:24 So Jacob was left alone, and a Man [came and] wrestled with him until daybreak. |
Bible Question: Can anyone help clarify this unusual verse. It seems that Jacob is wrestling with an angel or with God for a matter of hours--and won't "give up" until God blesses him. Why did Jacob start this in the first place? Why does God continue to wrestle? What is the meaning of this verse? |
Bible Answer: Jacobs stole the blessings from Esau, remember? Jacobs heart was after God. Now and then again Jacobs wrestled with the Angel of the Lord. He had resolve, and pressed in until he got what he wanted, his name was changed as a result to Israel, so his persistence paid off. I believe it relates also to persevering prayer, we are to pray until we get the answer. Of course if we pray according to Gods will. Even if it meants wrestling, now we wrestle against principalities and powers trying to hinder, but the outcome? We Win thru Jesus Christ, He is at the right Hand of God interceding on our behalf. By the way right Hand means Power. Its a study itself. |
