Bible Question:  In genesis 27:39 Isaac blesses Esau..."Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;" (KJV). In the NIV it says: "your dwelling will be AWAY FROM the earth's richness, AWAY FROM the dew of the heaven above." (niv). I have found that 9 out of the 16 translations I have checked agrees with the niv. Only the kjv, nkjv, 21st century kjv, asv, ylt, and Torah don't. This seems like a pretty large error especially when the references given also agree with Esau having been fruitfull to the point he and Jacob had to separate to allow enough room for their crops and livestock to flourish. I found this error upon my search for a translation of the bible that would suit me. In the mean time I've ordered the Tanakh Study Bible to further my learning of the Old Testament. I figure the best source of the OT would be from those whose ancestors lived it and wrote it. Thanks for any insight you can give me on this subject.

Bible Answer:  asilra: Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! Very interesting question too.

The INTERLINEAR bIBLE by Jay P. Green, Sr. General Editor and Translator. Hendrockson Publishers 1984 says,

" and lifted Esau his voice and wept. And Isaac his father and said to him, Behold from the fat of the earth shall be your abode and from of the dew of the heavens above;" The NASB Genesis 27:39 " Then Issac his father answered to him, "Behold, away from the fertility of the earth shall be your dwelling."

The NASB is by far the more accurate in translation, as well the NIV. Bothe translations used much older manuscripts, and better educated scholars. The KJV and the NKJV are not up the the better sources that the NASB and the NIV used.

I believe the key is the word "from". Does one say it means to take from or to stay away from. I looked at the 2919 in srtongs and then 278 and 276, I believe the "from" means the keep away from. I hope this gives a clearer understanding. And again welcome to the SBF.
