Bible Question: I am told, rather convincingly, that the name of God is "Yaweh" [YHVH]; not "Jehovah" [JHVH]...that a 13th or 14th century scribe simply mistook the "Y" for a "J" in this transliteration of the "incommunicable Hebrew name of God". Is this correct or incorrect? To what credible resource can your direct me? |
Bible Answer: Hello, BD@GA! The one source I have is a notation from the "GOOD NEWS BIBLE" (Today's English Version): Genesis 2:4 footnote f: THE LORD: Where the Hebrew text has Yahwey, traditionally transliterated as Jehovah, this translation employes LORD with capital letters, following a usage which is widespread in English versions. (Transliterate--Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary--to represent or spell in the characters of another alphabet.) From this notation I surmise that, though commonly accepted, Jehovah is not the original word--it is Yahweh! God Bless! |
