Bible Question: "And God said it is not good that man should be alone, I will make an help meet for him." (Gen 2:18) What exactly, is the role of an "help meet?" What could Eve do for Adam, that God could'nt or chose not to do? Afterall, Adam spoke "face to face" with God before Eve was created. I know that they we're to "be fruitful and multply and replenish the earth" so that's one reason He needed Eve. But what else did He need Eve for that He could'nt find in God? I ask because some people, even Christians believe that there's no real peace and joy in life if you're not married. I could only think of one pleasure that a wife could add to my life, that Jesus could'nt do, and that's sex. Anything else that a person looks for in marriage I have found in Jesus,to be honest. I want to get married but I don't feel that it's a need of mine. And I definitely don't think that not having a family is gonna ruin my relationship with God. Sex is only for a moment, just like all the other junk we try to replace Jesus with, they just won't can't satisfy the human heart. The more I see life the more I grow to understand that the majority of people, even some Christians get the role of the "help meet" and the role of "Jesus Christ" mixed up. So in closing, what should do we look for, in our "help meets?" |
Bible Answer: Hello humility, Let's start with an answer to the question which can be found in the preceding chapter. Gen 1:26-27 (ESV): Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Notice that when God made man in his image and likeness, he referred to the couple, not Adam alone. It is the couple united together as one flesh that fully demonstrates God's image and likeness. That being so, woman is the only suitable helper (modern translation of "help meet") to complete that picture. God did this by making woman different so that her femininity complements Adams masculinity. This is the general rule for mankind. In your case, you have found what the apostle Paul mentioned in 1 Cor 7, that some can be happy and fulfilled in service for the Lord as unmarried. So be it. Steve |
