Bible Question:
Eve was created to be a 'helper' for Adam. Did the biblical author intend for Eve's role to imply the subordination of women to men? |
Bible Answer: Hello and welcome, I think the context demonstrates that Adam was the ultimate authority: 1. He was responsible for keeping the garden. 2. He was given the command of what to eat and not eat. 3. He was responsible for naming the animals. 4. Eve was made as a helper, not the responsible party. From the context we see there was a measure of equality: 1. Eve was a suitable or corresponding helper. That means she needed to be equal in some ways in order to fulfill that. 2. Eve carries the Imago Dei (God's image) as much as Adam. The conclusion is that Eve was subordinate in sphere of authority but not in status. Steve |
