Bible Question:
Why was Abraham's name changed |
Bible Answer: Gen 17:4-5. The name change was part of God's covenant promise. " [5] Abram and Abraham are merely two forms of the same name, both meaning, "the father is exalted"; another variant form is Abiram (Numbers 16:1; 1 Kings 16:34). The additional -ha- in the form Abraham is explained by folk etymology as coming from ab-hamon goyim, "father of a host of nations." Footnote from the NAB on Gen 17:5 A similar name change from Jacob to Israel occurred in Gen32:27-29 whne jacob received a blessing from God's angel. Think also of Simon's name change to Peter in Matthew 16:17-18 when Jesu says: "Blessed are you Simon bar Jonah... you are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church." Similary we see Saul being referred to as Paul after his conversion, although in his case there is no incident of renaming mentioned and the name change seems to take place later in Acts 13 immediatley after God sets apart Barnabus and Saul for a special work. The same happened as Abram came to full maturity and was about to father Isaac and when Jacob was returning to his homeland to reconciel with esau and settle down as a man free of the indentured servitude he had been under with Laban in order to obtain his wife.
