Bible Question: What is the meaning of El Shaddai? |
Bible Answer: Word Study ... El Shaddai ... Lorraineshelleygavin, greetings and welcome to the forum. I gleaned this from various sources, as well as my own study: El Shaddai means God Almighty or "God All Sufficient" ... 48 times in the OT, 31 times in Job. The word may be an Accadian word that means "mountain" so that the expression produces a meaning like, "'El, the One of the mountains. The Septuagint uses Greek "ikanos" meaning "all-sufficient" or "self-sufficient." The idols of the heathen are called "sheddim." It expresses more than the power of God alone. It expresses the power and sufficiency of God to bestow his grace and fulfill his promises. El-Shaddai is God able to save, able to do his will, able to shed his blessings upon his people. Exodus 6:3 underlines El-Shaddai as the name revealed to the patriarchs. We see this elesewhere in the OT (Gen 31:29, 49:24, 25; Ruth 1:20, 21; Psa 91:1; Pro 3:27; Isa 60:15, 16, 66:10-13; Mic 2:1). The Greek equivelent is Theos Pantokrator, which means he who holds sway over all things or the ruler of all. Revelation uses His name 9 times (1:8, 4:8, 11:17, 15:3, 16:7,14, 19:6,15 21:22) and 2 Corinthians (6:18), once. In Rev. 19:6, the word is omnipotent. I hoped this helps, Searcher |
