Bible Note: Greetings Truthfinder! I would say that verse one refers to the initial creation of the 'stuff' of the universe, but the 'stuff' was as yet unshaped. The following verses deal with God's shaping of His creation. As far as the light of v.3, the term used in not the Hebrew term for 'sun', 'moon', or 'star', but simply 'light'. The verse goes on to distinguish between night and day. So, I would say that light here was much the same as the light of the sun, but the sun simply hadn't been created yet.
