Bible Question:
God- by Langston Hughes I am God- "Without one friend, Alone in my purity World without end. Below me young lovers Tread the sweet ground- But I am God- I cannot come down. Spring! Life is love! Love is life only! Better to be human Than God-and lonely." By the end of the Old Testament, God is far removed from the human scene. Can we prove that the charactetization of God in the poem is true? or no? |
Bible Answer: 'Why did God create man? Is it because He is lonely? 'We are never told why God created us. We can guess and there are some passages that come close but we are never told exactly. There are two major opinions. 'First Opinion. The first opinion is that He created us so that He could have fellowship - that is not be lonely. '. . . that you also may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. (NASB) 1 John 1:3 'The passage never says that was the reason, but the result of being a Christian is love for God and eventually we will spend eternity with Him. Is that what God wanted? Does He want us to be with Him? I believe the answer is yes. But is that because He is lonely? We do not know that. We are never told.' (www.neverthirsty.org/pp/corner/read1/r00329.html) 'Ancient thought often held that the gods made man because they were in need of servants. Much modern thought argues that God made man because He was lonely or did not have anyone around to love or appreciate Him. However, the God of the Bible is in no way dependent upon mankind even for love or worship. That He reveals Himself at all is for our benefit, not His.' (www.probe.org/docs/evidence1.html) 'God did not lack anything in Himself that prompted His creative act. He wasn't lonely or bored. To say such a thing about Him would be to imply He is not eternally self-sufficient and perfect.'
