Bible Question: In Ecclesiastes 3:5, what does "a time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones" mean? |
Bible Answer: It is sort of an agriculture/war issue. If you wanted to make the field of your enemy unproductive but still usable for you when you conquered him you would scatter stones throughout his fields to make them difficult to plant and therefore take away his source of food. If you wanted to completely destroy the field you would scatter salt. If you wanted to clear a field for planting you would gather the stones so you could plant. So there is a time to destroy a field and a time to create a field. The real difficulty is having discernment when to do which. It is difficult to do something that may hurt someone even when the end result brings healing or wisdom. Ex. child rearing, medical proceedures, confronting error, etc. Sometimes a hard hand is required sometimes a soft one. |
