921 | How does God determine the difference? | Heb 6:1 | Rowdy | 133757
Just one more troublesome post from your favorite pest. I thought I'd throw this into the discussion and would be interested in your response. Copied for reference Matt 25:31 "But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 "All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; 33 and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. 34 "Then the King will say to those on His right, 'Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 'For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; 36 naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.' 37 "Then the righteous will answer Him, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? 38 'And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39 'When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' 40 "The King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.' 41 "Then He will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.' 44 "Then they themselves also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?' 45 "Then He will answer them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.' 46 "These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." Since we're all going to be able to go to Heaven based only on our belief as you've stated, how does this square with Jesus' teaching above? I await your response. Thanks for your patience and God bless. Rowdy |

922 | Inmature babes unskilled in righteusness | Heb 6:4 | Rowdy | 109057
I must admit, this scripture, Heb 6:4 has always been perplexing to me as a christian but it does seem to go counter to the guidance given by Peter in 2 Pet 2, as follows: 19They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity--for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. 20If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22Of them the proverbs are true: "A dog returns to its vomit," and, "A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud." Again, I need to emphasize I'm fuzzy on the correct interpretation of Heb 6:4 and will ask Jesus when I get to Heaven but I gotta say that Peter's words are very plain and simple and very graphic. I don't see how these words could be confused so I'll let them speak for themselves. Two small items I would offer to those reading. When you're considering where you're going to be spending eternity, would you rather be absolutely certain of your membership in God's family or would you like to take a chance on the fuzzy interpretation of a somewhat questionable scripture, written by one of the most advanced minds whoever lived. Look again at 1 Cor 9:27 and remember it was most probably written by the same author as Hebrews. |
||||||
923 | can you lose it? | Heb 6:4 | Rowdy | 110358
I would refer you to 2 Pet 2 as follows: 21It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22Of them the proverbs are true: "A dog returns to its vomit,"[6] and, "A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud." Also Paul is quite adament with 1 Cor 9:27. It seems Paul and Peter are firmly committed to the possibility that we as God's children can reverse our mindset and go back to the world of the Devil. I really don't know what the scripture in Heb 6:4; it guess it sounds like a contradiction but I don't think so. All I know is the plain, straight forward scriptures as cited above. I also believe in the adage, "Better safe than sorry." God bless. |

924 | Better safe than sorry? | Heb 6:4 | Rowdy | 110436
I'd like to start with a reference to my previous post of 109057 which dealth with this same issue. But in specific response to your query, I simply mean what most people mean with its use. When you find yourself with a problem such as the contrast between these verses, or the controversy surrounding the Rapture, Premillenialism, the requirement of baptism in God's plan of savation, it's always preferred and strongly encouraged for us to keep studying and make the correct conclusion. I always like to repeat that the Bible is its own best commentary. All the other commentaries are fine for discussion and opinions are "a dime a dozen," including mine. But we can't argue with God's Word. That being said, we're still left with this quandry of Heb 6:4 and 2 Pet 2. I can only say that I have studied this subject of "Falling from Grace" all my life. There's numerous examples in the Bible showing God's people both in the OT and the NT who at one time, showed their faith in God, King Saul, King David, Anninias and Saphira, the folks in the 7 letters of Asia from Jesus in Revelation. In all these examples above, God gives ample opportunity for them to repent and to "get back in God's good graces." King Saul failed to do so whereas King David did repent and is called "a man after God's own heart." Time and time again, we're warned to be on guard like Apostle Paul buffeting his own body to prevent ourselves from being lost. There's just too much evidence in the Bible against this doctrine, "Once Saved, Always Saved." To summarize "Better safe than sorry," I would have to say is best digested as follows: Are we prepared to meet our Maker with that conclusion? Could you defend your position in God's perfect court of law and justice with a truly sincere and honest conscience when He expects us to know better and to trust Him to settle controversial matters? God bless you for asking the question. Just keep studying and praying about it. I really would like to discuss this with you further or with anyone else. Please let me know. |

925 | No more priests? | Heb 7:11 | Rowdy | 114009
I think the verse you're looking for is cited above. The main theme throughout the book of Hebrews is the superiority of the new High Priest in Christ Jesus, compared to that of the previous Levite priesthood.
926 | Cleanse Conscience? Dead Works? | Heb 9:14 | Rowdy | 121058
I've been dealing with this issue for the last several weeks with several different folks on the Forum so I'll take a shot. In my mind, we should see our conscience as being a vital part of that Image of God which He created in all of us, Gen 1. You probably have already heard of the passage as follows 1 Tim 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. In a similar manner, we can salve our conscience into believing that we can retire from our ministry, carrying the cross Jesus gives to each of us. We must never fall into this kind of self-deception for it will have dire consequences including a very hot reception after Judgment Day. I would define dead works as those we've done in the past and living works as those going on in our current and present ministry. I'm convinced that each christian should take up his/her cross and serve Christ in whatever capacity they're qualified to fill. They must use their talents to the best of their ability and be fruitful in the Lord's vineyard as depicted in John 15. James also deals with this matter on a very practical level. Faith without works (read as current, on-going works) is dead. Mankind has a great tendancy to want to retire from a long period, possibly even a lifetime of work and "rest on our laurels." We must avoid that temptation as we're commanded to be faithful till death, Rev 2:10. Don't get me wrong, works from our past can be an excellent place to discuss how we could have done better but we MUST move on and tackle new goals, setting our sights on things ahead like Paul said in Phil 3:12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, Now if anyone deserved to retire from his service to the Lord, it had to have been Paul and we see this amazing amount of dedication while in prison, bound in chains. What a man! So you see our Lord keeps our conscience fully functional and hard working, reminding us when we do wrong or even when we think about it IF we're doing our part and keep that vital part of the fellowship with God active and alive as described in 1 John 1. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

927 | THE IMPORTANT OF THE BLOOD | Heb 9:22 | Rowdy | 121540
Even the wife of Moses recognized our God is a bloody God and saw how important it was to Him and her husband: Ex 4:25 Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son's foreskin and threw it at Moses' feet, and she said, "You are indeed a bridegroom of blood to me." 26 So He let him alone. At that time she said, "You are a bridegroom of blood"--because of the circumcision. Yes, even from the very beginning with Abel's sacrifice of worship over that of his brother, Cain, we see the power in recognizing the importance of blood to God. God knows without blood, man doesn't really get serious about making a true commitment. That's why it's so important to come into contact with His Son's blood. Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption (deliverance and salvation) through His blood, the remission (forgiveness) of our offenses (shortcomings and trespasses), in accordance with the riches and the generosity of His gracious favor, Col 1:14 In Whom we have our redemption through His blood, [which means] the forgiveness of our sins. God bless. --Rowdy |

I, too am interested in seeing your response to this controversy. Also, your profile is quite mystical but not very revealing about the true Thelma. Could you expand on your profile? Looking forward to your response and God bless. |

929 | Are unbelievers in any way "saved"? | Heb 11:1 | Rowdy | 118408
I would submit this post only in an effort to give this thread the balance as given by God's Word. Paul gives this guidance to the Romans which is also applicable to the modern world: Rom 2:12 All who have sinned without the Law will also perish without [regard to] the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged and condemned by the Law. So for those in the world that have heard God's Word, they are most emphatically held to that standard as you've stated so powerfully. But there's no way anyone can possibly defend a position that God would actually condemn someone based on a standard of judgment that the person had never heard. BUT that DOESN'T mean that those folks will be treated to an easy judgment. All human beings do have the image of God with which we're all created and that's the standard which will be used by God to determine whether they go to heaven or not. This is discussed briefly in 1 Pet 3:21. God bless. --Rowdy |

930 | Are unbelievers in any way "saved"? | Heb 11:1 | Rowdy | 118442
Dear BradK, I started to reply right away but I think I really need to restrain myself and allow some other Forum participants to "weigh in" on this topic. But if you really insist on seeing my mindset, you can bring up some of my other posts that are somewhat related. Believe it or not, in spite of what my Forum nickname might suggest or what anyone might infer from my posts, I'm not one prone to fighting with words or to engage in debates. I do think the Lord enjoys a good debate as I've stated elsewhere but I'm not good enough with His Word to participate in that art. I would like to do more study and homework and get back to you. Meanwhile, keep studying, dear friend and keep praying. I know I will. God bless. --Rowdy |

931 | Are unbelievers in any way "saved"? | Heb 11:1 | Rowdy | 118856
Please allow me to attempt some dialouge here only to try and nail down a clear understanding of your position. Are you actually trying to say you have studied this passage and concluded that God will judge that portion of the world past, present and future by Bible standards even if they've never heard of the Bible or any of its contents? Rom 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. and Rom 2:1 I've re-read these scriptures and they seem to me to be in support of my statement. (It seems incredible these verses are coming from you in support of your statement.) Please let me summarize my statement: We're all endowed by God with His image as described in the first few chapters of Genesis. Now I know the "image of God" is NOT clearly and specifically described somewhere but you will agree that it must be the major differences that distinguish us from the rest of creation, right? According to the experts w/PhDs at apologeticspress.com, some of those differences are the ability to speak, think, love, hate, make intelligent choices, worship and know the difference between right and wrong AND last of all, we humans alone have a soul. Would you agree to all that? Surely, these (possibly others) make up some of that "image of God" installed in all of us. It's that conscience and our inner soul that grows within every young person which helps them reach "the age of accountabilitiy." It's the same quality that draws us instictively to worship some greater being than ourselves and that's the same quality that enables us to determine right from wrong and thus put together a working and functioning society. A society that passes laws and makes judgements when one of their own does wrong and shows extreme disdain for those laws. It's that same innate quality that God will hold up to our lives IF we live and die without knowing anything about His Word or His Son and His dying for the lost souls of the world. Surely, we can agree on this topic, can we not? I hope so, but I also pray for God's blessings on your continued study and understanding. --Rowdy |

932 | Are unbelievers in any way "saved"? | Heb 11:1 | Rowdy | 118862
I'm saying that the Book of Romans, indeed the whole Bible is written to those who know of its existance and once hearing of its existance, yes they're bound by God to the best of their ability to check it out and see if it's true. Their conscience should tell them they'd better check it just in case they might be held accountable to it. In Romans, Paul is writing to christians. He knows they will read and re-read his letter. He also knew that we modern christians (and all the ones since then) would study it and use it for reference as Peter states in 2 Pet 3:14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. I must reiterate again with Paul's words from Rom 2:12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. So you see, one can very easily sin against his conscience AND "apart from the law." When that is done AND they die in that condition, then they're held accountable to their conscience but NOT in accordance with the Law from God of any dispensation. I don't really see how I could make this any clearer. If you're still having trouble understanding my statement, try printing it and let someone else take a look. God bless. --Rowdy |

933 | Are unbelievers in any way "saved"? | Heb 11:1 | Rowdy | 118864
Rom 2:12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. One last point you didn't address is the scripture above. How do you reconcile your statement with verse 12? But apparently you plan to do just that and somehow explain so I'll move on to my next question. Call me dense but can you please help walk me through Judgment Day and pretend I've lived the best life I could, was basically kind to my neighbors, etc. I was bascially a decent sort of fella and live up to my conscience. HOWEVER, I didn't know a thing about the Bible or any of the concepts of christianity, Jewish religion, nothing at all about organized religion; let's say I lived my whole entire life on a deserted island. Please explain to me the mechanics, step by step of this kind of Justice our Lord will meter out to people like the one I've just described. Remember now, my lack of knowledge of Godly concepts was through no fault of my own. This should be very, very interesting to read. I hope all Forum participants are following closely this thread of conversation. God bless. --Rowdy |

934 | Just what is the purpose of baptism? | Heb 11:7 | Rowdy | 129827
I've been watching and reading the recent posts on this subject for the past couple of weeks and restraining myself. So since I've been raised in a christian home as was my mother. Both my father and grandfather were elders so I was expected to "study and show myself approved" long before I finished school. But how could so many people be so passionately against this action as being an actual part of salvation so I was motivated to re-study the topic with as objective attitude as possible. Let's go all the way back to Leviticus. Have you ever considered just why did our God give his Israelite so much details and specific requirements in the matter of making sacrifices and worship to Him? I also looked at the antitype of the Ark to the modern age of Christianity. I suppose you've heard that comparison before. The flood compared to the world of sin and the ark compared to the church sealed tight against sin flooding in. Have you ever considered why did God instruct Noah to build only one door and just one window. A big huge boat, big enough to accommodate all the animals of the world with just one each door and window. It seems like an endorsement of just one entrance to the church and one single avenue of getting information from outside the ark/church. I then notice Naaman with his problem with leporsy. He finally obeys the instructions he receives from Elisha, God's prophet and is cleansed of this horrible disease, but notice only upon complying with ALL of the specific commands in spite of their not having any relation to a logical reason, at least by man's reasoning. So we come to John the Baptist who babptizes the actual living Son of God Almighty, the very Messiah Himself. He doesn't really want to do as he feels so inadequately qualified but Jesus insists. And of course, God gives His own seal of approval from Heaven as does the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. Jesus lived the only sinless life and died as the Perfect Sacrifie because of that sinless life, but he still was baptized to fulfill all righteousness. So how could we possibly argue about doing the same? He set the stage in John 3:5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Jesus gives the great commission in Matt 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Matt 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Matt 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." We see the first Gospel sermon in Acts 2 and the climax as follows Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Simple question and simple answer. Well, I really don't want to fill up the rest of the alloted space with verses which we know so well. Suffice it to say we can insert the word baptize into the word search and see for ourselves all the emphasis God places on baptism. Now you're probably wondering about now so why didn't God just put a chapter or a book in His Word, our Bible entitled Plan of Salvation or maybe How to Get into the Church and be Saved? I don't really know but I can guess. Apparently it looks like, in keeping with how God has revealed Himself and His Word over several thousand years, that he wants us to dig out for ourselves the step by step process. You see our going to Heaven is a gradual process. As indicated throughout Jesus' teaching and throughout the rest of the Bible, we draw closer to Him and He draws closer to us. So we should this refining process as a good thing. God is refining the physical out of our being so that we can feel comfortable with our God's Home that He has waiting for us. One last comparison and I'll conclude this post. It does seem that there is some similarity between circumcision and the act of baptism as they both are ritual type acts and seem to be the main focal point (threshhold) for people in their respective dispensations to get close to God. I do hope and pray this is all clear and God bless. Rowdy |

935 | Just what is the purpose of baptism? | Heb 11:7 | Rowdy | 129914
Thanks for your words of support. I'm only a vessel trying to shine the light on God's Word. Please believe me, and this is meant for everyone's reading. I'm NOT trying to say that baptism is a work or part of a system of earning something, least of all our Salvation. What I am trying to say is that baptism is the defining moment in our christianity when we start a whole new relationship of total submission to God in accordance with His Terms and Conditions. This baptism is very closely related to the "dipping" of Naaman, demonstrating the same quality of submission. Also similar to the total submission required of a grown man who wanted to become a Jew. Notice here again, God provides a demonstration to show us just how submissive and vulnerable a man really is in this scenario, just check Gen 34:24 All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city. Gen 34:25 Now it came about on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came upon the city unawares, and killed every male. Gen 34:26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem's house, and went forth. That's the point of this whole concept to God, our submission completely and totally. And to think He's letting us off easy with a mere baptism in a tub of water. How can we refuse such a simple act? He just wants us to show the world that He truly is our Lord and King. I hope to see other posts from around the Forum. God bless. Rowdy |

937 | What does He 11:39,40 mean? | Heb 11:40 | Rowdy | 114622
I've copied the verses below for context: Heb 11:37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were put to death with the sword; they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated 38 (men of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes in the ground. 39 And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40 because God had provided something better for us, so that apart from us they would not be made perfect. First of all, we should remember the main theme throughout the book of Hebrews is the superiority of Christianity, as Law of Liberty over the previous Law of Moses. Second point is this chapter 11 in particular is known by most Bible scholars as the "Hall of Fame" of God's faithful. Now we know who verse 39 is talking about. They didn't have a clear idea of redemption or salvation in the OT. They didn't even have a clear portrayal of Heaven in the OT so they really did have to put their faith in God. And of course we all know they didn't get forgiveness for their sins, not as far as God was concerned until His perfect sacrifice was made on the Cross IAW Rom 8:13. So the Plan of Salvation that is clearly described throughout the NT, is made available and is fully known to us in this dispensation. See Heb 8:6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. ...and thank God for it. God's blessings to you. |

938 | How are pre-Christians made perfect? | Heb 11:40 | Rowdy | 114675

939 | How are pre-Christians made perfect? | Heb 11:40 | Rowdy | 114740
I'm not questioning your use of the scriptures as they are there to give us a glimpse of what Hell is like. All I'm saying is after this world is "burned up" and the whole universe as God created it is destroyed, God's spiritual world is going to be all that's left. There won't be any oxygen or fuel with which to burn the proverbial "fires of Hell." There won't be any "nashing of teeth," at least not any physical teeth that you and I know about. I've studied on this topic for quite some time and have compared this figurative language to that in Revelation and Isaiah. In my opinion it seems that our Lord uses this kind of language when He's trying to describe something for which we don't have a common point of reference. In other words, just as we don't have a clue what Heaven is really going to look like, I don't think God has been able to describe what Hell is going to be like. I don't think you really expect to see "streets of gold," or "palaces of pearl," "seas of glass" in Heaven for the same reasons as stated above, do you?. Those kind of hard, physcial items of earthly elements won't exist either after Judgment Day. Don't get me wrong, I'm quite certain there will be Heaven and Hell and in the mean time, it looks like according to scripture there now exists Hades and Paradise. Now what those actual places look like as to actual details, I don't think the Bible reveals it in the very same kind of details that we're going to recognize when we arrive at one of those places. The things we do know for an absolute fact is that Heaven is going to be wonderful because it's with God and Hell is going to be a very miserable place because it's without God. It seems the figurative language was used to motivate us to respond appropriately: love for Heaven and intense hatred for Hell. I'm sorry, but the only scripture I can recall to support my conclusions on this matter from Peter. 2 Pet 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. I'd be interested in your response. I realize this is kinda radical and you might take a while. God bless. |

940 | How are pre-Christians made perfect? | Heb 11:40 | Rowdy | 114778
I'm quite sincere about the figurative language but I'm also trying to keep an open mind. Please expound to me about this a little more. IF the whole of God's creation is going to be totally disintagrated back into nothingness or void like it was before He created, what will the Lake of Fire be fueled on? What will the New Heaven and the New Earth look like? What are the dimensions? How will we stay on this New Earth? With or without gravity? Will we be consuming food or some kind of nourishment for our new spiritual bodies? I'm not saying all of Revelation or Isaiah CANNOT be taken literally; I'm just urging caution when we think about these things. Again, we must be open minded to God and His spiritual world. We don't have any common point(s) of reference for truly understanding what His world is really like. Our world here and now is finite and very physical, that's all we know with any absolute authority. Everything about the spiritual world, we get from our Bibles and the Bible only seems to give us figurative type language to describe the actual characteristics of this spiritual world. You didn't address all the points of my previous post. Please take a shot at responding to both those and to the specific points above. For example, do you honestly expect to see "streets of gold," etc. in Heaven? The one verse I do take quite literally is the one from 2 Peter as quoted in my previous post. Please marry this verse into your response. Please feel free to expound as much as you can and God bless you. |
