822 | Should Children Die For Parent's Sin? | Deut 24:16 | Searcher56 | 10944
While the principle of each dying for their own sin is acknowledged in Deuteronomy 24:16, there seem to be cases where it was not put in practice. For example, the child born to David and Bathsheba died because of their sin (2Sa 12:14-18). And Saul's seven grandchildren were put to death because of Saul's sin (2Sa 21:5-9). How are we to reconcile these contradictory sets of facts? The Bible says the sins of the fathers have an ill effect on the children to the third and fourth generations (Exo 20:5; Deu 5:9). Is this a direct contradiction of Deuteronomy 24:16? Steve |

829 | Would you of tried to stop His execution | John 19:23 | Searcher56 | 10190
JVH0212, I'll use your post to ask my next question. I agree it is a "really wierd" question. I am wierd. The reason I asked is because when I heard about the bridge operator who killed his own son to save all the people on the train got me thinking. Could I kill the one who I loved the most? The reason for this question is along the same lines. Know that you and the world would be lost forever, would you of stopped His crucifixion? I believed He had to die on that day, so even delaying it would mean He missed one prophecy. We do need to think about our role in His death -that He had to die for us, at that time. All those people, while they had a choice, played their part. -we have a choice by adding our sins to Him, letting Him die for us (I know some people believe He died for all, not just those who believe - a minor point). 830 | Could you nail Him to the cross? | John 19:23 | Searcher56 | 10091
EdB, Yes, we all are responsible for His death, and as you pointed out, we are saved by His death. Next question. If you were the one, and you were a follower of the Christ, and had to nail Him to the cross - would you, could you? You are not allowed to pass the hammer to another. So if you said no, what would become of your sins and mine? I am thinking deeply of the Roman soldier(s) who nailed Him to the cross ... and the centurion. I hope I get more response, even to my story about Julius. I do have one more question - I'll ask later. Steve |

831 | Who is responsible for Jesus' death? | John 19:23 | Searcher56 | 10007
I have seen various posts about who was responsible for the death of Jesus bar YHVH. I am - my name is Julius. I was one of the four soldiers who nailed Him to the cross. I learned how to nail people to a cross and I enjoyed it. I nailed His right hand to the cross. I am a son of a Roman soldier, in charge of a legion. I wanted to be like him, so I went to the best schools and learned many things. I chose to go to the armpit of the Roman Empire - Judea and Jerusalem. I had serveral encounters with this Man ... who changed my life. Two nights before I killed Him, I fell on my kness before Him and confessed that He was the Son of God and my Savior. So why did I kill him? Because my centurion ordered me to and my Messiah said I must. I told Him, I cannot and that I loved Him. He said I must, because He loves me more. That He needed to die for the sins of the world and would die for my sins alone. So I nailed Him, so He would be in too much pain. My tears fell on His face. I |

832 | Ezekiel ... Your 9 (10) points refuted? | Matt 28:19 | Searcher56 | 9136
Ezekiel ... Why can't you see that all but two of your points have been refuted? The numerics are your entries, the single dashes are Nolan's and mine are the double dashes. I'll have to do this in two parts. 1. Its grammar designates one name (singular) - We all agree on this 2. Its context shows that Jesus described His power and therefore told the disciples to baptize in His name. (vs. 18) - This verse taken in context shows the authority of Jesus and how He delegates this authority to the disciples so that they can baptize in His Name. -- Exousia is the word in the Greek. It is translated authority 65 times in the NAS, authorities 7 times, power 11 times and powers once of the 102 it appears in the NT. It is the noun feminine of exesti (lawful). I think it can be viewed as power or authority. -- They were to baptize in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit … not just His name. 3. Mark's and Luke's descriptions of the same instructions of Christ show that Jesus was the only name mentioned. - Mark's description does not assign any reference to "in the name of Jesus"; it only mentions baptism (Mark 16:15-16). Luke 24:47 simply says "His Name" which could refer to the authority given by the Trinity as a whole, not only Jesus. -- Mark 1:8 says He would baptize with the Holy Ghost. -- Luke 24:47 is about preaching - I do not see baptism 4. The Early Church, including Matthew, carried out Christ's instructions by baptizing in the name of Jesus (Acts 2:38; 8:16; 10:48; 19:5; 22:16; 1 Corinthians 1:13). - True for "The Early Church"; Ezekiel, show us your Scripture reference for "including Matthew". -- Acts 22:16 says to call on His name - either the God of our fathers or the Righteous One. Paul only says no one was baptized in his name (1Co 1:13ff). 5. The Name of the Father is Jesus; the Father is revealed through the name Jesus (John 5:43). - No, this verse does not say that the Name of the Father is "Jesus". The Father is not revealed through the name 'Jesus', and this is a misinterpretation on your part, Ezekiel. John 5:43 states that Christ has come as THE representative of the Father. Therefore, the Father is revealed through Him, not through the name 'Jesus'. This is the beginning of your "Oneness" heresy. -- What does Isa. 9:6 say? Is Everlasting Father referring to Christ? ... to be continued |

833 | Tim, Who did Paul call on (Acts 22:16)? | Matt 7:13 | Searcher56 | 9037
Tim ... In Acts 22:16, whose name did Paul call on? The God of our fathers or the Righteous One (vs. 14). Just an observation. Jesus did give a command - but no one apparently obeyed it exactly. So do we obey Him or follow the example of the church in Acts? Tradition can be wrong. Searching Scripture Steve |

835 | EdB, Did He die on Thursday? | John 19:31 | Searcher56 | 8085

836 | "3 days" only or "3 days and 3 nights"? | John 19:31 | Searcher56 | 8084
JVH0212, does the Bible say "three days" or "three days and three nights". If anyone leaves out the "three nights" thay are taking away from Scripture. Matt 12:40 says "three days and three nights". Have YOU asked a Jewish rabbi what that phrase means? The "Friday" is an error of tradition. Also, when was His entry into Jerusalem? I believe it is Nisan 10 (Sunday). Since Passover is Nisan 14 what day did He die? 11-Mo, 12-Tu, 13-We ... and the Nisan 14 is Thursday. Going backwards, we know that two disciples were going to Emmaus in Luke 24. It is Sunday (Nisan 17, Firstfruits). In verse 21, it says today is the third day since He died. What day did He die? One day since-Saturday (weekly Sabbath), two days-Friday (Passover Sabbath) and three days-Thurday (Passover). Both ways fit. Do not listen to other men, even forget what they said. Study Scripture yourself. |

837 | Paul's extra-biblical teaching inerrant? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Searcher56 | 8047
Lionstrong, was any of Paul's extra-biblical teaching inerrant? I believe Scripture is 100 percent God breathed. But, Paul and others taught other things that were not recorded in God's Word. My answer to Hank's question is that is is possible that his teachings not recorded in the Bible could have errors ... But, we do not know, since we do not know what he said. No one is correct all the time in their teaching all the time. Most of the teachers will agree with that. |

839 | Do W-F Twist The Bible? Acts 17:11 | John 10:27 | Searcher56 | 7897
Acts 17:11 may the verse you want. Word-Faith teaches some things that are Biblical, but, some are not. 'In brief, the teachings of these men may be summarized as follows: God created man in "God's class," as "little gods," with the potential to exercise the "God kind of faith" in calling things into existence and living in opportunity, however, by rebelling against God in the Garden and taking upon ourselves Satan's nature. To correct this situation, Jesus Christ became a man, died spiritually (thus taking upon Himself Satan's nature), went to Hell, was "born again," rose from the dead with God's nature again, and then sent the Holy Spirit so that the Incarnation could be duplicated in be-lievers, thus fulfilling their calling to be little gods. Since we are called to experience this kind of life now, we should be successful in every area of our lives. To be in debt, then, or be sick, or (as is often taught) be left by one's spouse, and not to have these problems go away by "claiming" God's promises, shows a lack of faith.' I was able to see (some of) the errors. But, they refused to listen. When the elders, and the people thought I was wrong, I left. I was tempted to challange him during one message, but held my tongue. |

840 | What is worship, according to the Bible? | John 4:24 | Searcher56 | 7734
I believe worship is being wrongly taught in the church today. It is either by not knowing what the Bible says or by deception. It begins with the definition of worship. I used a lexicon and concordance to see the occurrence of "worship". Then, I looked up the word to see what the original said. The number of verses translated worship varies, from Young's Literal Translation which has 19 verses, to The Good News Bible in Today's English Version (TEV), with 537 verses. I concluded only one word each in the original should be translated worship. - The primary Hebrew word, for "worship", shachah, is a powerful one. It describes the physical act of actually prostrating yourself on the floor before a sovereign, someone who has complete control over you. There are 171 uses of shachah in the Old Testament. It is translated bow, homage, prostrate, worship, weighs it down or a similar words. - Daniel wrote in Aramaic. The word he used, 12 times, is c@gid, pronounces segeed. It is translated to prostrate oneself, do homage, worship. It is related to the Hebrew cagad, used four times (Isa. 44:15, 17, 19, 46:6). It means to prostrate oneself (in worship). - The primary Greek word is proskuneo. It means to kiss the hand to (towards) one, in token of reverence. Westerns may not under-stand this. It is not a romantic or family kiss. I doubt many of us kiss with reverence, even if we kiss the ring of the Pope. There were ancients that kissed their idols. It is better see it as falling upon the knees and touch the ground with the forehead as an expression of profound reverence. In the New Testament it means kneeling or prostration to do homage (to one) or make obeisance, whether in order to express respect or to make supplication. It is used 60 times in the NAS it is translated bow, prostrated himself before, worship or similar words. There are other words translated into worship, when another word is better … including serve or service. - Each time the NAS mistranslates the word abad or latreuo worship, serve or service fits. Of the 290 times it is used in the Old Testament, abad is translated worship or worshipers only 13 times in the NAS. In Exo. 12:31, the NAS uses worship. Then the similar phase is translated 'abad as serve in Exodus (4:23; 7:16; 8:1, 20; 9:1, 13; 10:3, 7, 8, 11, 24, 26). Also, there are several times where the Bible says "worship and serve" or "serve and worship". Worship is shachah and serve is 'abad. If I thought service is worship and worship is service, I would think it would read "worship and worship". The Hebrew verb for service is latreuo. It means to serve for hire or to serve, minister to, either to the gods or men It is to render religious service or homage … to perform sacred services, to offer gifts. It is used of priests, to officiate, to discharge the sacred office. It is used 16 times in the New Testament. It is translated worship or worshiper only 5 times, in the NAS. Latreia is the Hebrew noun form. The NAS translates latreia as worship three of the five times. Worship and service are connected. Worship is essentially of the heart and mind, expressing submission and penitence toward the Lord. Service is providing the physical symbols and actions (offering sacrifices, washing in the laver, etc) that prompt the inner worship of the soul. Don't forget that service is used in two senses in Scripture--the service of the priests before the altars, and the service of the people in giving alms to the poor and teaching the righteousness of the Lord. Two other words translated worship should be reverence (which occurs more than the words for service) or religion. If you want more, I will be happy to discuss worship. I have written a paper on the subject. I didn't just take the words; I looked at the context… - I looked at who we worship. Are all the names and attributes of God, related to worship? - I asked why we worship, what is the purpose? - I've been taught that some activities (proceedings) were worship, yet was this how we should worship? - I wondered is there a special place we worship? - Finally, when can I worship… what do I need to do to prepares to worship? Steve PS I posted this awhile ago, I do not see it. |
