81 | Is this about water baptism at all? | Acts 2:38 | sniper | 77374
justme, If water baptism is openly confessing Christ before men, then why do we see examples of baptism when surely few or none were present? The Ethiopian Eunuch was in the middle of the desert alone with Philip. The Philippian jailor and his household were baptized immediately after hearing the message in the middle of the night. When Ananias came to Saul, who had been blind and fasting for three days, he told him to go without delay and be baptized. And, Peter in I Peter 3:21 clearly states that baptism is an appeal to God for a clean conscience - through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Please do not think that I do not understand your position. I am the son of a Baptist preacher who has a 4 yr BS degree from a Baptist college. I was taught your position every which way, and I followed it for many years. God bless, sniper |

82 | Those who call shall be saved | Acts 2:38 | sniper | 77372
Yes, one must call on the name of the Lord. Peter, in his Pentecost Day sermon, quoted those words from the Old Testament. What is the Bible approved pattern for doing so? Peter's sermon pierces the listeners to the heart, and they cried out, "what shall we do?" Peter did not simply say, "I have already told you. You must call on the name of the Lord." Peter said, "Repent, and let each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." There is a particular way that God wants us to respond to Him.
83 | What does it mean? | Bible general Archive 1 | sniper | 77214
I will respond in more detail later, but I believe you misunderstand my position slightly. I do not believe in any way "Baptizing and christening a young child may be fine as a symbolic ritual." I believe in immersion, I do not believe in the calvinistic sin nature, I believe children are innocent, and I believe that salvation is needed by adults for the forgiveness of sins.

86 | Repentance and Confession - obedience? | Romans | sniper | 77155
Aren't repentance and confession step of obedience? Let me answer that, yes they are. What makes them any different than baptism? God makes a comand and we obey, not out of a sense of entitlement, but because we love Him and want to follow him. God's gift is exactly that- a gift- we never could earn salvation. Baptism is not an added step, it the final step in a clearly delineated process. I once believed as you do regarding baptism. I got tired of twisting the Bible around to fit my beliefs. I just accept it for what it says. May God bless you. |

87 | What does it mean? | Bible general Archive 1 | sniper | 77149
Tim, What then, does "for the forgiveness of YOUR sins" mean? Is it just a statement dangling without meaning or relevence to the sentence? Why is it there? Have all the translators of various versions made some kind of mistake? You may choose to deny the obvious, but I cannot. Although I studied Greek in college, I am hardly a scholar. So, I cannot argue intelligently about Greek sentence structure. But again, all the translations I have read make quite clear that forgiveness of sins follows repentance AND baptism. I really don't understand the hang up. It is not as though you are earning anything. You are just doing what God has commanded, and in the end you receive a gift which never could have been earned. To God be the glory. |

88 | Is baptism an evidence of faith? | Romans | sniper | 77127
I have posted many questions regarding evidence of faith. It seems that most generally agree that confession of belief, and repentance are evidence of faith. Furthermore, it seems to be generally agreed that confession and repentance are necessary for salvation. In the same vein of questions, is baptism an evidence of faith? If so, is baptism necessary for salvation just as confession and repentance are necessary?
89 | disciplerami, support forgiveness last. | Bible general Archive 1 | sniper | 77124
Yes, the first thing to do is to make a radical and complete change of heart and life. Then, let each one of you be baptized after this change (repentance) has taken place, and the act of baptism be performed. But, why is baptism performed? Neither you, nor the experts you cite have answered that question. The answer is in the very next phrase of Acts 2:38. Why stop short of finishing the verse? It finishes,"for the forgiveness of sins."
90 | Why transliterate "baptizo"? | Bible general Archive 1 | sniper | 77118
Bible teaching, patterns, and examples are of immersion. A New Testament church must adhere to these guidelines. It appears to me that some adhere to a tradition of pouring/sprinkling. It may be that Protestant churches immerse merely out of tradition, but as I have stated a New Testament church must follow the Bible. I am curious to see your paper. |

Could the early church have been wrong? The meaning of the word is immerse. What do you think?

Okay. But, do either pouring or sprinkling fit with the meaning of the word "baptizo"?
93 | Why transliterate "baptizo"? | Bible general Archive 1 | sniper | 77082
Why did the KJV translaters transliterate "baptizo"? Was it on purpose? Is so, why?
94 | disciplerami, must it be immersion? | Bible general Archive 1 | sniper | 77081
Just a quick note. The word was never translated. It was transliterated. That is, the tanslaters for King James made the greek word into an english word. A proper translation would have been "immerse".
95 | Is evidence of faith necessary? | Romans | sniper | 77078
You have given good support that faith must be shown through action, otherwise it is useless. I am interested in the statement at the beginning if your post. Can you explain what you mean by, "There are people that capable of giving evidence of thier faith, but there are people that cannot." What people cannot give evidence of faith? |

96 | Does God save us when we show our faith? | Romans | sniper | 77017
Does God save us when we show our faith? In the absence of belief, confession, and repentance can a person have faith? If you are new to this discussion, please review the thread of postings.

98 | Baptism in the holy spirit? | Acts 19:1 | sniper | 76909
Sorry for jumping in, but I can't help it. The problem with your test is this: The context of any conversation determines varitions in the meaning of a word. The different passages you have cited which use the word "tongue" have differing contexts. It is just the same as looking up an english word in the dictionary and seeing that it has several distinct definitions. The context of the conversation will reveal the meaning. It would be wrong to apply only one definition of that word to each situation in which it was used. The same goes for your test. You cannot apply only one definition to every use of the word, because as your test has demonstrated that would be silly. Please excuse my interruption of your discussion, Sniper |
