81 | Is it okay to drink alcohol? | 1 Tim 5:23 | Greg Martin | 36007
Not only does the Bible not prohibit alcohol, but true to being the Truth and above all human knowledge, it correctly states the health benefits of small doses of alcohol. 1 Timothy 5:23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities. Today we know that a small amount of red wine clears the arteries and can prevent heart attack and stroke. Also note that John 2:1-9 tells the story of Jesus changing the water into wine. Would the man without sin change water into wine if it was a sin? That Jesus would aid someone to sin is preposterous. 10 And he said to him, "Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!" Caution! Romans 14:21 It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak. 1 Cor 8:9 But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak. Thus it is probably best to abstain in public and in company. However, be sure to be accountable! That is have a trusted Christian spouse, friend, etc who will make sure there is no abuse. It's probably too bad we don't use real wine for communion in American Churches today. To make a small amount as part of a Holy ceremony, would probably do good for the health of many, and help eliminate the risk of this addictive drug. |

82 | The bible is a work of fiction - discuss | Gen 1:1 | Greg Martin | 35904
Doesn't make you a bad person. It just makes you like the rest of us. On your way to Hell unless there's some way you can pay your debt to God. But how do you pay an infinite debt? How do you clean yourself with your filthy rags? It's like the man who breaks his neighbor's property and spends all day fixing it. He works hard, very hard. But at the end of the day he can't fix it. So because he worked hard trying to fix the thing he broke, he knocks on his neighbor's door and demands to be let in and fed supper because he worked hard. You say it angers you that belief should stop people from being together. Get over it. When God gets to your heart there is nothing more important. You say "I have a genuine interest in knowing why people beleive. Admittidly this is for slightly selfish reasons" Then you never will. You have to lose your pride first. Do you understand that Timothy McVeigh may get to heaven and you will not? If he bent his knee in utter broken humility before God, he will. Your pride prevents you. You ask why we believe. I don't believe. I know. Your girlfriend doesn't believe either. She knows. You can too. Quit washing yourself with oily rags and muddy hands. |

83 | Earth was without form, and void. | Gen 1:1 | Greg Martin | 35903
You wouldn't believe what I wrote and lost. Maybe God doesn't want you to know. You would have been shaken or confused or both. The Bible says what it means and means what it says. God created and it was formless and void. THEN God said and it was. God said and it was. God said and it was. God said and it was. God said and it was. Then He fashioned man with His hands. |

84 | How did | Genesis | Greg Martin | 35624
It was fruit of the Tree of knowledge of good and evil. Gen 2:9,17; 3:3 No one knows what kind of fruit it was. It is most likely that it no longer exists because God barred the way to the garden so man could not eat of the tree of life(Gen 3:23,24) and the curse makes the ground produce thorns and thistles (3:18). So it appears that all the trees in the garden no longer exist. What did Satan use? PRIDE. He appealed to Eve's pride and tried to get her to commit his sin, overthrowing God. (Gen 3:5) |

85 | communion bring what to our minds? | Luke 22:19 | Greg Martin | 35622
But also, Not only do we look back at His sacrifice, but we look forward to eating it with Him in our Father's Kingdom. Matthew 26:29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom." |

86 | Why do we do communion? | Luke 22:19 | Greg Martin | 35619
Yes it commemorates the Last Supper. We do it because our Lord said "Do this in remembrance of me" Luke 22:19
87 | Any biblical answers to Mormon beliefs? | 1 John 4:1 | Greg Martin | 35214
Ask them about the Trinity. Is Jesus God? If not then Isaiah was a liar and hence a false prophet. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a *Son* is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, *Mighty God*, *Everlasting Father*, Prince of Peace. Now I've heard them answer that Isaiah says "Like a Mighty God" but they have no answer for "Everlasting Father", except to say, well it's a praise of God the Father because of the Son. But this can't be because the next title is "Prince of Peace". God the Father is not the *prince* of anything. He is Almighty God, The Creator. Then what about John 20:28, 29. 28Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" 29Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." If Jesus was not his God, why didn't He rebuke Thomas for blasphemy? |

88 | What does Bible teach on election? | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 35209
Quite right. This is a topic too broad to be suited for a forum. It is an entire doctrine that can only be covered with extensive study. I'm sure GeneralWas would agree with that, having taught it for a year. In order to answer this question, you'll have to accept ambiguities and mysteries as an answer until hard study is accomplished to understand the broad statements. You have to understand that the whole of God is incomprehensible, so we are left with some apparent "contradictions", that are a result of our limited comprehension. See, I always looked at the generally accepted answer to the question "Can God make a rock so big He can't lift it?" as unsatisfactory. The generally accepted answer is that the question is wrong. I disagree. God is way bigger than that. I believe the answer is "Yes He can make a rock so big He can't lift it; and then He will lift it anyway." Now this question and answer may seem flippant, but it really is not. It illustrates perfectly our limits in understanding the infiniteness of God. The answer to both parts, can He make and can He lift, has to be yes simultaneously. He can make a rock so big He can't lift it. But He will lift it anyway. Well then He didn't make a rock so big He can't lift it. Yes He did, but He will lift it anyway. How can light be both a particle and a wave simultaneously? If you are wondering what in the world this has to do with your question, it is this. God gave us Free will, but He is beyond the limitation of time and knows everything. So free will, election, and predestination are all simultaneously compatible. In other words it is all by His permission and authority, but He knows your heart before you are born - from before the beginning of time. I don't know if this helped or confused... |

89 | scripture for Write it in your doorway? | Deut 6:9 | Greg Martin | 35004
Deuteronomy 6:9 Deuteronomy 6 1 "Now this is the commandment, and these are the statutes and judgments which the LORD your God has commanded to teach you, that you may observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess, 2that you may fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. 3Therefore hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe it, that it may be well with you, and that you may multiply greatly as the LORD God of your fathers has promised you--"a land flowing with milk and honey.' 4"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! 5You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6"And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. |

90 | Why did Jesus have to beborn of a virgin | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 35002
What has already been posted is correct. I like to relate these Truths to things people can actually see (or at least picture) Imagine God's heaven as a canvas of pure white. He will absolutely not let anything but pure white touch the canvass. Now Man is the brush and is given a palette of pure white and ugly, gruesome black. God tells Man not to touch the black but only the white. When man so much as touches the black, his brush is contaminated. when he goes back to the white, the white is contaminated. The result is he is barred from Heaven with no recourse. Now suppose a man is born and never in his entire life touches the black. He only dwells in the pure white. Can he then go to heaven? No. Because his brush is tainted. Even his "pure" white is contaminated and, hence, not pure. He also is barred from Heaven with no recourse. We are all sons of Adam. (Isaiah 64:6 all our righteous acts are like filthy rags) Jesus came as a clean brush and dwelt only in the pure white. (Born of a virgin, sinless life) Now He is able to dwell in heaven. (paint on the canvass) Since the wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23) Christ owed no penalty, but paid it anyway. Because He paid a penalty not due, He is able to apply the justification to an infinite number of those to whom it is due. (John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name) |

91 | Mythology and the bible? | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 34996
Is there a question here? I'd be wary of "information" gleened from online discussions. Yes even here. Note that the prophesies of Christ began with God's sentencing of Adam and Eve. So from the beginning the Christ was made known. And do not forget that Israel was in Egypt for 500 years. From what sources do the posters give for their stories? I'm not saying they make these up or repeat what was made up to deceive, but then again they may. How is it that these same can discredit the veracity of the Bible, yet believe secular stories from the same time periods? So was there a question here? |

92 | Was Israel saved, or not? | John 6:49 | Greg Martin | 34993
No. Israel rejected Christ, so blindness in part has happened to Israel untill the fullness of the gentiles has come in. Rev 7 shows the 144,000 sealed on earth, before the white robed multitude from the tribulation are seen standing before the throne. This part I can answer with certainty. Now, Paul says all Israel will be saved. John writes 144,000. So here's the followup question Is all Israel saved or only those to whom the blindness is removed? Rom 11:7 What then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were blinded. Rom 11:25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written "The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; 27 For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins." Rev 7:4 And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed: To reconcile the two, one could assume that "all Israel" means the entirety of the nation, 12,000 from each tribe, 144,000 in all. So not every one but from the entire nation. These will be those who recognize the Messiah has come and is come again. |

93 | Can't find verse "good called evil", etc | Is 5:20 | Greg Martin | 34243
You may be thinking of Rom 1:18-32 especially 32 "who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them." |

94 | what was the angel talking about | Zech 4:6 | Greg Martin | 34238
This is the Angel of the Lord speaking to Zechariah. They are words to Zerubbabel to go ahead with the building of the temple in Jerusalem. This will be done not by might nor power (of men or nations) but by the Spirit of God. In other words, Do not worry about it or have doubts about it. God himself will build it, and who or what can stop Him? Also, some say anywhere in the OT where the title "Angel of the Lord" appears, it is a title of the pre-incarnate Christ. Hence the seven lampstands as in Revelation, refers to the NT Church. Certainly, "And he shall bring forth the capstone With shouts of "Grace, grace to it!"" the Capstone is Christ, Psalm 118 21 I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation. 22 The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; 23 the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we bless you. Capstone to what? Matt 21:42 Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes? 43 "Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit." The Church. How was the Church built? By the Spirit. this entire vision is not only a word to build the Temple, but a forshadowing of the Church. It really is more a prophesy of Christ than of the Temple. |

Note, Wherever we are, it is very desirable to have the presence of God with us, for this is all in all to the comfort of every condition. It was this that made Noah’s ark, which was a prison, to be to him not only a refuge, but a palace" |

96 | Who is Jesues | NT general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 34153
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 8:57Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?" 58Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." 59Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. John 20:28And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" 29Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." |

97 | Muselim Religious | Eph 2:8 | Greg Martin | 34058
So much to say, so little time to say it. I can't answer as to the reason, but only that we have been told that in the end times there will appear the unholy spirit, the unholy son of the unholy father, and the unholy father. Now the unholy spirit, we think, is not Islam, but an amalgamation of religions that has "a little something for everyone" and nothing for God. This, we think, has to happen because "all the world" will worship the beast. (Although this can just as easily happen through the power of the beast and his image. Christians - the salt and light - will be gone.) In order for the amalgam religion to take place, the Western world has to raise the stature of the lesser (in the West) religions. We have seen this happen in recent months. We see in California students are being forced to act as if they were muslim and recite from the Koran and pray to Allah. We have seen our President call this brutal demonic religion "a religion of peace". This is a big falsehood. Islam means submission (TO THE LAW) not peace. The acceptance of Islam as a "viable" religion will lead to it having equality or even prominance as a religion, thereby making it easy to blend all the religions. Also, the "church" has to give up it's claim of exclusivity. Many liberal "churches" already deny the deity of Christ. So as "churches" give up their exclusivity claim, and the other religions rise to prominance, the combination of all religions becomes an easy step. *This theory of the amalgam religion can not be proven and can only be speculation* But we know for certain there will be an appearance of the unholy trinity. This amalgam religion is a possibility of what may happen and not a certainty (Have I emphasized the disclaimers enough? Revelation is dead on True and reliable. It is our interpretations and spculations that are uncertain) Now concerning these statement of works vs grace, I liken it to your neighbor having a fence. Now this fence has incredible workmanship and design. One day as you are pulling out of your driveway you back into the fence and destroy it. The owner comes out and insists that you owe him a fence exactly as it was before. You know that the law is on his side and that he is right. So you hire several contractors to come out and look at the fence, but none of them can make a bid because they can't do the workmanship, and they can't even determine the material it is made from. So you go out and buy some wood and get up one morning and slap together a fence. You work all day, very hard. But the fence is made of wood instead of the material unknown by man, and there are no intricate carvings, and the spacing is uneven, and it is an unprofessional job. But because you worked hard on it all day, you go to your neighbors door and pound on it, demanding that he let you into his house and feed you supper because you worked hard on his fence so he owes you. In contrast, grace is like the same fence being destroyed, and no one can rebuild it, but instead of getting up one morning to buy wood and build the fence, you look out your window and see your other neighbor from across the street is out there building the fence for you. When he finishes it is perfect. It is exactly as it was before, made from the same material unknown by man, complete with detailed and intricate carvings. You no longer owe your neighbor a fence, and the price is that your neighbor from across the street, who built the fence for you, insists that for payment you come to His house and let Him feed you supper. |

98 | Can you lose your salvation? | Eph 2:8 | Greg Martin | 34054
John 10:27My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.
99 | why was pharoh's heart hardened? | Exodus | Greg Martin | 34052
But note that the Pharoh's heart was already hard in that he had treated Israel with cruelty. Also note that God had told Abraham that his children would be slaves in a strange land, but that He would judge them. Genesis 15:13Then He said to Abram: "Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. 14And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions. We know from Romans 1 that 21because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. and 24Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, and 28And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; And so it is apparent that there is a point of no return with God, a point at which He will give a person over to vileness, and completely harden their already hard heart. the reason given in Romans is having a knowledge of God but not thinking it worthy of retaining. So the Justice of God is that if a person forsakes Him, He will harden that person's heart, that they may not be saved. This is a tough lesson, but one who will not bend his knee will be condemned to not having it be able to bend. Some could ask if this is fair, but He is God. He can not be continually offended without retribution. In addition, God in His purpose needed the world to see His mighty, Awesome power. If Pharoh had been a push-over, would the World have heard of His mighty works? Look how Israel behaved after seeing the awesome hand of God, the plagues, the pillar of smoke and fire, the separation of the Sea, the closing of the sea on Pharoh's army, etc. How would they have behaved if Pharoh had relented? |

100 | Why no sacrifices for Jews today? | Exodus | Greg Martin | 34045
I want to add to my answer. The reason Jews will not have satisfactory answers to these questions yet are so hard to convince, I think, and I sincerely pray not to be offensive, but I desire to give a truthful reason, is given by Paul Romans 11:25For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. |
