64 | Christ Sometimes Taught in Greek | Mark 12:30 | Norrie | 126634
If you are interested in Pontius Pilate, there is a book by that name by Paul L Maier that is excellent. He has references for practically every chapter in back. There was even a darkening of skies at same time of Jesus' death in Rome. You can prob find a copy used cheap on amazon.com, that's where I got mind but I read it from my church library first. It was so good, I wanted my own copy.
65 | Roman guard myth? | Matt 28:11 | Norrie | 122355
I wasn't losing posts tho that has happened before, I just had none of those symbols but it was saying I was so post wouldn't go thru. Yesterday I had same verse from every translation on Gateway to show different meanings and it said those symbols were there. There were a few from copy and pasting but I got rid of them all, then it still said they were there and there wasn't...today I didn't go above the home keys period. I think any symbol on keyboard should be allowed. There are many good links tht can't be posted because of this too. I've always had that beef here. :)

67 | Roman guard myth? | Matt 28:11 | Norrie | 122254
They were guarding outside the temple area, they would have had to have had Pilate permission for that. They asked Pilate for his guards, he said you do it. You're the Greek scholar, what is literal translation of the Greek? |

68 | Roman guard myth? | Matt 28:11 | Norrie | 122247
They would have been punished regardless, whether they reported to priests first or Pilate if it was Romans. From all the evidence, I believe it was temple guards. Pilate was thoroughly disgusted w/the whole matter and wanted nothing more to do w/it, he told priests to do what they wanted.
69 | Roman guard myth? | Matt 28:11 | Norrie | 122244
Pilate was also quite sick of the Jews, his wife was giving him a bad time about executing an innocent man, from what I've been trying to discover, it seems he told them more like do it yourself because he was tired of their whining. Yes, later they sent a msg to Pilate about guards sleeping trying to CYA. Accd to above book, the note went like this: "Joseph Caiaphas to Ponyius Pilatus, peace. The followers of the Nazarene will stop at nothing, as you have doubtless heard. They came at night and stole his body while the guards were sleeping. Therefore if any claims are made to his so-called 'resurrection,' you will know how to interpret these. We are grateful for your cooperation. Do not think harshly of our guards for falling asleep. They have been exhausted over the last days in pursuing this case. Peace Pilate had contempt for such an excuse in behalf of sleeping guards. Didn't they set up shifts? They would not have come off so lightly if they were Roman auxiliaries." I know the Pilate book is an historical novel but the author did a lot of research in it. The back of book is loaded w/references. This question started because my daughter asked it the other night. :) |

70 | Roman guard myth? | Matt 28:11 | Norrie | 122240
OK, I reread the acct in the historical novel of Pontius Pilate by Paul Maier. For each chapter, in back he has the historical data from where he got his info. This is what it says: "THE GUARD AT THE TOMB: There is some contraversy as to whether the Jewish temple police or Pilate's Roman auxiliaries were used to guard the sepulcher. The Greek of Matthew 27:65 cites Pilate's statement simply as: "You have a guard," though grammatically this could also be translated. "You may have a guard." But the first translation seems perferrable, since the watch reported the empty tomb directly to the chief priests rather than Pilate (Matt 28:11), which the temple police would certainly have done. Pilate's auxiliaries would clearly have reported to him and only to him. Terullian, "Apologeticus" xxi, 20, also speaks of Jewish military guard at the tomb." |

I'll think on it. I'll try to find that part in Pontious Pilate book too, see what that says. Thanks. :) |

But they weren't Roman, why would a Roman say they were there when they weren't?
73 | Roman guard myth? | Not Specified | Norrie | 122125
Where did the myth about Roman soldiers guarading the Tomb come from? In Matthew it says temple guard, depending on which translation, but Pilate said basically YOU guard it. The guard is not mentioned in other gospels but all passion plays, story books, etc say Roman guard, not temple guard.

I agree w/you. Plus I don't expect anything from anybody. But my mil is another story...:)
76 | Church requirements for helping others? | Gal 6:10 | Norrie | 121243
I think you grasped the situation exactly. We do help her, Mike thinks his sister should help too but it's just us. Oh well again. :) There are some individual members who help her but she said the pastor when he did bring a few things over, didn't even get out of his car to come in a pray w/her, just sent his daughter up. That's seemed kinda cold...they are a small church where they all know each other. I go to a large church so atmosphere is def. different. |

77 | Church requirements for helping others? | Gal 6:10 | Norrie | 121240
Thanks. I guess what concerns her is she's been at that church from conception, been active when she's physically able but since this last time when she was down, they took away her SS class w/o having a board meeting, things like that. I think many of the older members are fixing to go including her. But I do think she thinks people owe her more than they do, but churches should help their members when they are in trouble...oh well.
78 | Church requirements for helping others? | Gal 6:10 | Norrie | 121176
These are kids that when they have church dinners, which this church does a lot, beats everybody to line and sticks there fingers in food to where others refuse to eat after them. They are old enough to know better. They are unrestrained. Sorry if the description of them offends your sensibilities but it's the truth and sometimes the truth hurts. This is what my mil tells me and is not my church. I've been there before and saw these kids in action, it's not an exageration. They fill up on everything, including cake, cookies...drinks lots of soda. They are not fat from not having enough of right kinds of food but from gorging on wrong stuff. |

79 | Church requirements for helping others? | Gal 6:10 | Norrie | 121175
My mil does not meet requirements as she is less than 60 then and has kids and is not a widow but has been divorced 3 times, she's also in 100 percent disability. But the pastor taking the food and that other family who makes lots more than she does w/the fat kids who gobble like unrestrained hogs aren't widows and orphans either. They give food from food bank to any who are needy supposedly, not just widows and orphans but there's no food since those 2 families already ate them out of the food bank. I do think she expects the church to do too much for her but I can't say that to her or else I'd get in trouble, you know how mils are! But I send home food with her and we pay many of her extra expenses, like dentist, we bought her a car even! Then she expects us to maintain it. My husband gets sick of spending his money on her all the time. She gets as much per month as my mom but we don't have to supplement my mom... |

We help her out as much as we can but that woman is a walking disaster area! If something can go wrong, it will for her. You'd have to experience her to understand...believe me, it's not pretty...but we try. She is planning on leaving that church tho. |
