61 | God helps those who help themselves? | 1 Cor 12:28 | Tim3:16 | 164434
Hi Helen, No, that time-worn cliche is not founded in the Bible, in fact, the words 'God Helps' never appear together, at least not in the King James. They do appear in the verse above, though not in an exact match. I put the verse below in a passage to help you understand how God actually does help us, and it is by giving us gifts, which could also be called talents. "...But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way." vss. 24f - 31) Now, I believe we are basically useless without God's help, so what happens to those who God doesn't help? or, what does God do with those who do not help themselves? Remember, it says also, in Matt 5:45 that He makes the sun rise on the evil and the good, and He sends down rain on the just as well as the unjust. (my paraphrase) I think that is why there are so many Protestant denominations, because people interpret things that they see in the Bible for themselves, or pick and choose verses out of context, and then they disagree and cause a split so that someone will go and start their own church that is wrapped around that belief. Stay warm on this cold week in Wisconsin! Tim, from Milwaukee. |

62 | Living together without sex | 1 Thess 5:22 | Tim3:16 | 163593
Funny you should ask that, Doctor. The same thing happened to me 3 months ago. My fiancee was in a predicament and needed to get out of her apartment. we were to be married within 1.5 months, so we asked our very knowledgable pastor, during one of our pre-marital counseling sessions, what he thought of our idea. He said that it was not his place to judge, we should take it to the Lord in prayer, and he said he was confident that we would remain pure. So we went ahead, took turns sleeping on the couch, and was care ful not to let our families or church members find out, of course without actually lying about anything. During the co-habitation, we went out to dinner one night and she had a little too much to drink. That caused us to fall into the very act of immorality that we were trying so hard to avoid, and were yet so confident that we would not fail. Well, one night before dinner, I upset her and she had a hard time forgiving me. we went to the next session and our pastor said he saw some danger signals, and that he suggested we wait 6 more months for the marriage. We have since broke up. Before the fateful night, it was my belief that it was such a great testimony to how much respect we had for God's laws. To live together and still avoid sinning. After that night, however, even though we both repented with a contrite heart, it was my belief that our Lord squashed our marriage plans as His way of telling me to keep his whole law, and if I thought I could bend it without failing, well then, as the spiritual head of the household I better be certain that I do not fail, or cause anyone else (future wife) to fail. I now regret the decision, and am living with dire consequences in my life. May God shine His light of truth and love upon your relationship and help you both to make the right decision. Tim PS the KJV translation of the above verse is, "Abstain from all appearance of evil." |

63 | what evil did the Lord create? Isah 45:7 | Is 45:7 | Tim3:16 | 160299
Our wonderfully omnipotent God has the ability to order as well as dispose of each our comforts, as well as all of our crosses, in this (or any) world. See John 1:3 "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." To me, this means He created the devil for the fulfillment of His divine will, and He also created the evil of punishment, and yes, also the evil of death. |

64 | Selfishness | Is 26:8 | Tim3:16 | 159629
Hi Night Jay, I have heard selfish people being accused of having "ingrown eyeballs". This is where they only want what is to their own advantage, and are unwilling to wait for these desires, (above and beyond what is essential for basic survival), and no sympathy or concern for others who may have to make sacrifices so they can get what they want when they want it. One example would be if two lovers were planning a wedding and the man says a small wedding would be fine, but the woman says she insists on a large wedding regardless of the cost or affordability. What we should do is seek the LORD in prayer and fasting, and search the Bible for the answer, asking for the guidance of the Holy Spirit God Bless, tim |

65 | Christian Polygamy? | Bible general Archive 2 | Tim3:16 | 156431
Well, in 1 corinthians 7:4 it says we do not have power of our own body, but that power belongs to our spouse. If we have two spouses, then each one would have power over 50 percent of us, and if we had 5 spouses, then each spouse would have power over 20 percent of us. That is not a situation that lines up with God's inspired word, Agreed? Tim PS, I enjoy the 700 club as well, but with anything else that is on TV, you must take it in, and decide whether it lines up with God's truth or not. |

66 | Faith Knowledge and Baptism | Rom 10:17 | Tim3:16 | 156430
Well first, I believe that you need knowledge, for how can your heart love what your mind does not know? Yet, you are right in referring to Eph 2:8, in that we are saved by Grace. I believe that without the Grace of God, we are unable to have Faith. 1 John 4:19 gives onother clue, "We love him, because he first loved us." This tells me that God created us and all our emotions and curiosities are owing to Him. So there is nothing we can give or do to surprise God or earn anything he freely gives us. I do not believe that an infant can make a profession of faith that leads to its baptism. Can you have knowledge without faith? Well I would say the knowledge would be a sporadic knowledge at best, or how could we know of God without wanting to have a personal relationship with him through faith? Can we have faith without knowledge? Well, that would be a "dead" faith, for what would we actually be being faithful to, without knowing what we are seeking? Tim |

67 | Did Jesus punish anyone, that is, an ind | Matt 18:6 | Tim3:16 | 146580
Mat 18:1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, "Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" Mat 18:2 And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, Mat 18:3 and said, "Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Mat 18:4 "Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Mat 18:5 "And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me; Mat 18:6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. 68 | Explantation of Gen. 6:1-6 | Gen 6:2 | Tim3:16 | 127593
Hi tgc, following are from some of my favorite biblical commentaries, I would like to share their insight with you. The sons of God (that is, the professors of religion, who were called by the name of the Lord, and called upon that name), married the daughters of men, that is, those that were profane, and strangers to God and godliness. The posterity of Seth did not keep by themselves, as they ought to have done, both for the preservation of their own purity and in detestation of the apostasy. They intermingled themselves with the excommunicated race of Cain: They took them wives of all that they chose. -Matthew Henry And, this from David Guzik, who is the director of Calvary Chapel Bible College, Germany: "Many people have understood that the sons of God were those from the line of Seth, and the daughters of men were from the line of Cain, and this describes an intermarriage between the godly and the ungodly - something God specifically prohibits (Deuteronomy 7:1-4; 2 Corinthians 6:14) It is more accurate to see the sons of God as either demons (angels in rebellion against God) or uniquely demon possessed men, and the daughters of men as human women The phrase sons of God clearly refers to angelic creatures when it is used the three other times in the Old Testament (Job 1:6, 2:1, and 38:7). Why would Satan send his angels to intermarry (either directly or indirectly) with human women? Satan was trying to pollute the genetic "pool" of mankind with a satanic corruption; to put a genetic "virus" that would make the human race unfit for bringing forth the Seed of the woman - the Messiah - promised in Genesis 3:15 "The Savior could not be born of a demon-possessed mother. So if Satan could succeed in infecting the entire race, the deliverer could not come." (Boice) Blessings, tim |

69 | CanIlove my wife more than I love jesus? | Bible general Archive 2 | Tim3:16 | 126508
jain george, Jesus tells us in Matt 6:33, "But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Here we are not told to seek any pleasures for ourself, much less the pleasures of God's kingdom, for there is nothing we can do to seek them effectively. What we are told, is to seek ye first the Kingdom. Jesus tells us how to do this as well. If we love Him, we will obey His commands. One other thing is to look at the word JOY as an acronym that stands for : Jesus Others Yourself If we live our lives and priorities in that order, there should be no problem understanding His will |

70 | To whom I love more? | Bible general Archive 2 | Tim3:16 | 126422
Jesus was simply saying that nothing can come between you and God - no family members nor the instinct of self-preservation Think of the boldness Jesus exhibits! He commands nothing short of ultimate commitment, and we give it to Him - why? Not because it is something we have to do, but it is something that we want to do. Because of love. When we know the love of Jesus; when we are in a love-relationship with Him, only then can we be committed to Him like this. Napoleon once said: "I know men; and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander [the Great], Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded his empire upon love; and this hour millions of men would die for him." Hate is a strong word, but that is exactly how it might seem to family members or friends when we put Jesus in front of them. |

71 | particular verse | John 3:16 | Tim3:16 | 126335
mikec, I do not watch pro wrestling but someone at work asked me what John 3:16 was because a wrestler had it on his clothes. Not only is it a very important verse concerning salvation, but the numbers 3:16 (obviously) hold special significance to me. See the books of first and second Timothy, as well as Revelation. As far as the significance of the verse listed above,First, is an example of God’s love in giving his Son freely to the world, this includes three things:—1. The mystery of the gospel being revealed: The love of God the Father is the source of our regeneration by the Spirit and our reconciliation by the lifting up of the Son. Jesus Christ is the only-begotten Son of God. This is an exhibition of His love, in giving him to us we know we that he loves us. Concerning the redemption and salvation of man, it pleased God to give his only-begotten Son. He not only sent him into the world prepared with full power to negotiate peace between heaven and earth, but he gave him, to suffer and die for us, as the great propitiation or expiatory sacrifice. This is how God commends his love for the world: God so loved the world, so completely, so richly. Now his creatures shall see and know that he loves them, and wishes them the very best of all things. He so loved the world of fallen man as he did not love that of fallen angels; see Rom. 5:8; 1 Jn. 4:10. Also we have, in verse 17, is God’s design in sending his Son into the world: it was that the world through him might be saved. He came into the world with salvation in mind, with salvation in his hand. Therefore the offer of life and salvation is sincere, and shall be made good to all that by faith accept it. Bless you my brother, tim |
