61 | Who is God using? | John 3:16 | Parable | 55775
While I agree with your basic theme, I disagree with your closing remarks. As I understand your exhortation, it is similar to Paul's instruction in Titus 3:9 "But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless." Your advice to stop the seemingly endless debate over technicalities has merit. However, you close with "Time is running out..." and "it seems to me that Christians are too busy rearranging the pictures on the wall while the house is burning down." Peter cautions against putting too much emphasis on external events, at least in our personal suffering for Christ. 1 Peter 4:12 "Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you." As for world events, I believe there is nothing humanity can do to trigger Christ's return or in any way influence God's timing. Psalm 144:3-4 "O Lord, what is man that you care for him, the son of man that you think of him? Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow." Jesus cautions against thinking we know when the end will come, for even He did not know. Matthew 24:35-37 "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man." Finally, for us as workers in the Lord's field, there is at least one problem with assuming we are close to the last harvest. It is that we stop cultivating/sowing and focus solely on those ready to be harvested. Any farmer will tell you, if you don't plant for the next season, this year's harvest will indeed be the last. By proclaiming the end times, you proclaim that there is no point to invest in next year's fields. |

62 | What is the most used word in the Bible? | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 52555
Sorry, I couldn't resist :) To answer your question better....wouldn't it depend on which translation you picked? If you were interested in the original Hebrew or Greek, you probably aren't interested in the articles or pronouns, but rather the "meaningful" words, right? This makes counting more difficult. Also, some words that you might consider to be the same might appear in different forms, e.g. hear, heard, see, saw, etc. It seems your question could be very easy or very difficult to answer, depending on what you mean. In any case, the way to go about it would be to do a word count with a digital version using a computer. Parable |

64 | Humility in OUR BiIble Interpetations | 1 John 2:16 | Parable | 51532
Amen. We should be humble in everything! Pride, the opposite of humility, destroys our relationship with God. James 3:13 "Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom." 1 Peter 3:15b "...to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence." 1 John 2:16b "...the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world." 65 | Greetings - (Jesus is Lord?)- instead of | John 4:38 | Parable | 51370
It is important to remember that the Holy Spirit is the only one who brings anyone else to the Lord. With that said, I offer this as an answer to your question: Everywhere we go, we are to demonstrate our relationship with Christ by everything we do. Often that includes witnessing to others by sharing the Gospel with them. However, sometimes it is important for us to sow seeds of faith and cultivate the soil rather than attempt to reap a harvest before it is ready. In John 4:38, Jesus said to the disciples "I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor." This implies that someone must do the hard work of sowing before the crop is ready for harvest. Hence, there are times we are called to prepare others to hear the Gospel so that when the evangelist comes, they will be ready to receive the message. Of course, we may indeed become the harvester, but not without first sowing and cultivating. Sometimes, it takes years before someone will be ready to listen to the Holy Spirit. For an excellent discussion of the importance of sowing, see "Finding Common Ground: How to communicate with those outside the Christian community, while we still can." Parable |

66 | is homosexuality a sin? | Rom 1:27 | Parable | 49309
Sexual immorality is a sin. It has been suggested the original reason for this is sexual immorality is a form of idolatry, i.e. worshipping false gods or putting something before God. The basis for this suggestion is that in many pagan rituals in biblical times, sexual acts of all kinds, heterosexual, homosexual, bestial or involving children were common as part of the worship. However, the prohibition is not just against doing what pagans did, as if the intent behind the act were the only problem, but rather against the act itself because it is inherently immoral, like murder, etc. It then follows we are not to be sexually immoral so we can remain pure and holy before the Lord, with our bodies as a living sacrifice in faithful obedience. The question then becomes, is homosexuality a form of sexual immorality? The scriptures are clear, it is. As for masturbation, this issue has been debated at length on this forum, so much so that there was an appeal for the dialogue to stop, message 47652. My original opinion on masturbation may be read in message 41781, but be advised there are numerous others that offer a different understanding. To view those messages, click on "search" and go from there. Parable |

67 | inmyheart, could Paul be sarcastic? | Acts | Parable | 49032
My first inclination is to say that no, Paul is not being sarcastic. When written, sarcasm is often misunderstood, even by those readers who are intimately familiar with an author and the situation under consideration. In sarcasm, the meaning is opposite the literal interpretation of the text and is hard to identify without extra-textual information, such as tone of voice, facial expression, gestures, etc. Perhaps it would help to know if there are any cases in which it is generally accepted that a biblical author has used sarcasm. Do you have any other examples? Parable |

68 | I'm writing a book, need to know | Mark 14:16 | Parable | 48944
People will be concerned if what you say: 1. contradicts Scripture, 2. does not follow from Scripture, 3. adds to Scripture, 4. takes away from Scripture, and 5. is not reasonable and/or likely in light of generally accepted scholarship about bible history, culture, archaeology, etc. On the other hand, the Bible does not provide exhaustive detail on every situation, but rather gives us what we need to know in order to receive God's message. If you speculate, be sure to clarify to your readers that what you are about to say is speculation and explain why you are doing this. So, why would you want people to consider the possibility that Mary was present at the Last Supper? Parable |

71 | READ ALL THAT YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON! | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 48329
Perhaps the Bible agrees with you...about knowledge, that is. "Test everything. Hold on to the good." -- 1 Thessalonians 5:21 So, here are some things to hold on to! "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." -- James 1:5 "But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice." -- James 3:14-17 "To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his" -- Job 12:13 "Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds of the air." -- Job 28:20-21 "God understands the way to it (wisdom) and he alone knows where it dwells, for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens." -- Job 28:23-24 "For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength." -- 1 Corinthians 1:25 and perhaps most significantly, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." -- 1 Corinthians 1:18 Parable |

72 | Luvconquers, do you confess Jesus..... | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 48320
Perhaps 1 John 4:20 is the best answer to Luvconquers' historically based objections to the authority of Scripture. Those who did violence and justified it in the name of the Lord were not acting according to the command from Him to love others, as indicated by srbaegon's response. Parable |

73 | I'll wait on God, there's always a way | Deut 5:16 | Parable | 47863
No, there is not ALWAYS a way. With God all things are possible, but you must accept that sometimes His answer is NO. If you don't accept His answer, you are going nowhere, ON YOUR OWN. You cannot agree and disagree at the same time. You are not being honest when you say you don't understand how you are disobedient to your parents. Not only that, you are disrespectful to the owners of this webpage who clearly require that you be 18 years old in order to be granted the PRIVILEGE of posting to this forum. Basically, you have STOLEN this privilege and broken trust with them. As Jesus said, give to Cesar what belongs to Cesar and give to God what belongs to God. In this case, you need to give the webmasters their due respect by obeying their "term thingys" and give to God your obedience to his command that you honor your parents. If you disobey your parents, you are dishonoring them and God. You don't want to call a pastor because you don't want to be accountable to anyone for your decisions, which you know are selfish and unwise. This is the kind of pride that leads to the notion that YOU are in charge. Don't wait to see what you THINK God is telling you, read the Bible and KNOW what God is telling you. But knowing is not enough. You must have faith and that faith will bear fruit. Jesus explains it quite simply: "if you love me, you will obey my commandments". If you don't like these terms, that's too bad. No one ever said being a Christian was easy. Finally, don't do it. You know what I'm talking about. Just don't. You're wrong. Let it go and don't pick it up again. |

74 | God blessed me! | Deut 5:16 | Parable | 47834
Teengurl, This development should be a red warning flag to you. In the spirit of telling the truth in love, you are seeing only what you want to see and you are being played. So, you disobeyed your father again by continuing to communicate with this guy? You know that nothing good can come from this. God does not call us to disobey what you know is right in order to do His will. Let me explain. So, your friend is a rapid learner, he read a little from the Bible, now he's counseling you, and now you see the Bible in a whole different perspective? I don't think so. Liars adapt to fit the needs of their victims. Open your eyes to what is really happening, not what you want to happen. Talk to someone about what is going on. Even if what you say is true, most of the time, a little knowledge is more dangerous than none. Like when first semester physics students think they can wire a house for electricity becuase they can solve the equations for the circuit. Everyone has needs, but we depend on Christ to fulfill them, not some guy who knows what to say to get you to trust him. You best be careful, what a 19 year old man wants from a 13 year old girl is not Godly or in the interests of the 13 year old girl, who by the way, is disobedient, willfull, inexperienced in the ways of the world and playing with fire. If your perspective on the Bible has changed, does it by any chance now tell you that it is OK to meet with this guy? If so, then ask him if its OK for your father to go with you. If your friend is really what he says, he should be fine with that, in fact, he would want to meet him. But if he's hiding something, he'll talk you out of that idea. Do yourself a favor, stop using the computer until you tell all this to an experienced pastor. You have no excuse, they are listed in the phone book, so call one and tell him your story. If you are obedient to Christ, you will obey your father. Stop communicating with this guy, get off the computer and reach out to the people you know in person. |

75 | A hypothetical question | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 47774
Perhaps another possibility is this, although my answer no doubt is problematic, as I will demonstrate. Offer to take the place of the unbeliever. This what Christ did for us and if we are to be like Him, this is what we should be prepared to do. see John 13:34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." On the other hand, Jesus' work on the cross is completed, once for all. Romans 6:10 "The death he died, he died to sin once for all..." and 1 Peter 3:18 "For Christ died for sins once for all..." Also, in Luke 16, the story of the rich man and Lazarus, "31He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' Hence, it is unlikely the unbeliever will repent even if another volunteers to take their place. I note that Christ did volunteer with no guarantee that anyone would believe. |

77 | Is it just I don't wantto know the truth | Deut 5:16 | Parable | 47737
Pain can be a message that something is wrong, and it makes us attend to healing or stop whatever we're doing that hurts us. Listen to it. I think, that out of enthusiasm for the Lord, you have taken on too much. This is a sign that perhaps your efforts are being driven by your will and not His will for you. Pain can also be a sign of progress. Your view of the world is expanding rapidly, not just from knowing Christ, but also from the natural process of growing up. That's why they call them "growing pains". You can be comforted by knowing that everything God has done, He has done for you. RELAX. Trust Him to keep you safe. He has given you your parents to this purpose. Rather than work to bring email friends to Christ, let your life show the light of Christ to your family and friends. There is a famous saying "Preach the Gospel everywhere you go, and if you must, speak." This means live so others can see Christ in you, this is much more compelling than you trying to save them. After they see Christ in your life, they will be interested to know more. At that time, wait for the Holy Spirit to guide your words. Luke 12:11-12 says "...do not worry about...what you will say, 12for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say." And yes, a 19 year old is a man, at least physically. I close with this thought "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." -- Proverbs 15:22 |

78 | Maybe I should explain further... | Deut 5:16 | Parable | 47668
Think about it. The fact you have this question in your heart shows that something is not right. Trust that small voice inside you that tells you to LISTEN to your father. You don't need anyone to tell you how you are disobeying, you already know it but you want someone else to prove it to you. That voice you hear is the Holy Spirit trying to get your attention. That other voice, the one trying to get to disobey, is one you must not listen to. And yes, the scripture applies to you. You said "I want to bring him to Christ". Don't be fooled. The only one who can bring your friend to Christ is the Holy Spirit, not you. This is a dangerous time for you because you may fall into the sin of thinking you are able to do only what God can do. That was Adam and Eve's problem in the garden and all of us must remember that no matter how strong our faith or calling, WE are nothing. Give it to God, trust that His Will be done and honor your father with obedience to not just his words, but also his intention. |
||||||
79 | But how am I disobeying them? | Deut 5:16 | Parable | 47663
By communicating privately with anyone over the computer, you are disobeying your father. Posting notes to a forum such as this one is probably ok with him, unless you engage in extended dialogues with just one person or you start to get personal. You said his instructions were "not to talk to "men" on here". There are good reasons your father gave you these instructions and even if you don't understand them, you must live up to his trust by obeying him in this. Believe me, his reasons are sound and if you disobey, you are putting yourself in danger. Absolutely DO NOT ever meet anyone you communicate with over the computer. There are thousands of sick men on the internet who are looking to deceive you into becoming vulnerable to them so they can hurt you. They might even pose as someone who needs you to bring them to Christ. You have done your part for this 19 year old person, let the Holy Spirit do His will in him. As it is, your have no idea that this person has been truthful, right? But God knows and He accepts your prayers for that person, but He does not want you to disobey your father nor for you to meet with this person. I know this from years of experience in this world where I have seen evil work its ways by lies and deception. This is one of those situations. I encourage you to tell your parents about what is going on. |

80 | Is it wrong to use condoms? advise | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 47162
I agree with Searcher56 that the answer given by Makarios on 03/11/02 is excellent. I would only add that we may be confident in his interpretation by also knowing that God gave us sexual relations not just so we could reproduce, but also that we could enjoy pleasure and intimacy, i.e. profound relationship, with our mate. Biblical support for this may be found throughout the Song of Solomon, one of the most beautiful books of the Bible and one that demonstrates the scope and magnitude of what is possible in a Godly marriage.
