5661 | Gershom and Eliezer? | Ex 18:4 | Searcher56 | 7385
1 Chronicles 23 tells about their children: 15 The sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer. 16 The leader among Gershom's sons was Shebuel. 17 Eliezer had only one son, Rehabiah, the family leader. Rehabiah had numerous descendants. -Gershom which means "foreigner" is one of four mentioned in the Bible. -Eliezer which means "help" is of of 11 men mentioned in the Bible. They remained with their mother and Jethro when Moses returned to Egypt. (Exodus 18:4). They were restored to Moses when Jethro heard of his departure out of Egypt. Steve Searching Scripture |

We do not know. His brothers would of been called bar (son of) Joesph, if they had a surname. It was not common practice to have a surname. Judas Iscariot second name was from. I am not sure women took on any surname. |

5663 | What are the seven Spirits of God? | Rev 4:5 | Searcher56 | 7257
Gloria ... We have read of the 7 spirits of God elsewhere in this book (1:4; 3:1; 5:6). BTW, some translations do not capitalize spirit - The Greek does not have capital letters. It is not the seven churches (lampstands) or leaders (stars) of chapters 2 and 3 (1:20). E. Cobham Brewer says "(1) the Spirit of Wisdom, (2) the Spirit of Understanding, (3) the Spirit of Counsel, (4) the Spirit of Power, (5) the Spirit of Knowledge, (6) the Spirit of Righteousness, and (7) the Spirit of Divine Awfulness" These spirits are angels (3:1; 4:5; 5:6; 8:2, 6; 15:1, 6-8; 16:1; 17:1; 21:9), according to someone else. "And the [1] spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of [2] wisdom and [3] understanding, the spirit of [4] counsel and [5] might, the spirit of [6] knowledge and of the [7] fear of the LORD"--Isaiah 11:2 Some may say the last six are all part of the first, spirit of the LORD. |

NO!!!! Rom. 6:1 is very clear.
5665 | clear conscience | 1 Tim 3:2 | Searcher56 | 7193
First CAPITAL letters are hard to read and used for emphasis. I think you mean 1 Tim 1:5. As ALWAYS, look at the context. The first is the paragraph (vv. 3-11), which talks about false teachers. In verse 5, it starts with "the goal of this command" ... referring back to verse 3, where Timothy is ot give a command to certain men, tose preaching a false Gospel. Giving the command, needs to be done in love (speak the truth in love (Eph 4:15)), pure heart (2 Tim. 2:22), good (clear) conscience (vs. 19, 3:9) and sincere faith (2 Tim 1:5). In order to reprove these people, Timothy needed all these things. I used the other parts of the context, by looking at the book of 1 Timothy and the rest of the Bible. Having a good or clear conscience does not mean I am innocent (1 Cor. 4:4). I know the truth and speak it, even if I am not a minister. The only way to keep a good or clear conscience is to study the Bible. When I see someone not telling the truth, my mind is clear - so with the other re |

5666 | Is 'match making' Biblical? | Bible general Archive 1 | Searcher56 | 7144
In Genesis 24:1-4 Abraham sent his servant to look for a wife for his son, Isaac. In 28:1-5, Isaac sent his son away to look for a wife. Judges 14:1-3 has Samson asking his parents go get him the wife of his own choosing. It is still part of some cultures to arrange marriages, usually by both sets of parents. Genesis 34:8ff is one case. Parents know their children ... the parents of the prospect, the prospect or the culture. I think your friend knows you and this woman. While I cannot recall friends arranging a couple, it is okay. If you saw Fiddler on the Roof - there was a professional matchmaker. It is important that your ministries can coincide. I know couples who are on the mission field or did not go ... and the wife is unfilled. If called to the mission field, it needs to be in the same place. I bring this up because who said that you two are on different paths. Ask her the path God has for her. It may be you or her have the "gift" of being single. I did not marry until I was 3 |

RC ... while the is no distinction in salvation - man/woman Jew/Greek free/slave ... there is one between what a man does in chrurch and a woman. As I think as pointed out, the older women were to teach the yonger ... plus they were deaconesses, according to some people. |

5669 | Sketch/profile on Joseph (Jacob's son)? | Genesis | Searcher56 | 7120
Nolan ... There is much in the Bible. He is born (Gen 30:22-24) and was the gave Jacob the reason to go home (vs. 25). The starting in chapter 37, he is the prominent character for the rest of the book, exoect for chapter 38. There are some extra-Biblical information that I will send you. I'm still looking for confirmation that because of him, Egypt was wealthy until the last phraroh gave it away. Her name was Cleopatra. |

5670 | Command the blessing? | Prov 10:22 | Searcher56 | 7119
Charis ... "Command the blessing" and "get the blessing" sounds like "health and wealth" but, I think not not found in the Bible. I do not think we can ask, much less command a blessing. God does not "owe" us anything. He already promised us many things, including suffering and eternal life - we we believe in Him. The blessings promised in Mat. 5:3-12 are a promise - it means that we will be happy. I do not think any of the words we see as blessing means material goods. Steve |

5671 | Devoured by the devil? | 1 Pet 5:8 | Searcher56 | 7051
Charis ... When we are not self-controlled and alert. That is we lose our focus on the Shepherd and His plan for us. Verse 9 says we need to resist him (and if we submit ourselves to God, the devil will flee (Jas 4:7). We can be devoured by the devil, when we are - loyal to a man (1 Cor. 1:10-17). This is includes a church or demonination. - prideful (Gal. 5:25-26). - debating minor issues (2 Tim. 2:14-16,23-24). Like did Adam have a belly button. Plus, issues that can divide, like what songs to sing and when Christ will return in relation to the tribulation. - living unworthy lives (Eph 4:1ff). Some are: a. Lying (4:25). b. Anger (4:26). c. Unwholesome speech (4:29). d. Lack of kindness/forgiveness (4:32). e. Sexual immorality (5:3). f. Drunkenness (5:18). g. Lousy marriages (5:22-33). h. Disobedience to parents (6:1-3). i. Overbearing parents (6:4). j. Disobedience to bosses (6:5-8). k. Threatening employees (6:9) We need to know the truth, so that we are not tossed around (Eph 4:16). These are some ways the devil can devour us. Steve |

5672 | Whatever we want? | 1 John 5:15 | Searcher56 | 7048
Charis ... we first need to back up to verse 13, which limits this to those who believe, do have eternal life. Even if you start in verse 14, which says we need to ask according to His will, He hears us. So when our asking (vs 15) is according to His will (vs 14), we know He hears us (vv 14-15) and we will be granted our request (vs 15). Many use this verse for the "prosperity Gospel" ... but, we do need to have our wills and wishes match His. Contentment plus Godliness equals Great Gain Steve |

5673 | 'Born again' a moment in time? | 1 Pet 1:3 | Searcher56 | 6945
Charis ... Just as our phyiscal birth was a moment in time, so is our spiritual birth. And that is what I think the Greek verb means. Saying the prayer doesn't save ... it is a change of heart, tho the mouth solidifies it. Our 'born again experience' begins with conception - when we hear the gospel ... we begin our life when we accept Him ... I do not think it will ever end, tho when we meet Him in the air and the marriage supper will be very special. Some will be with Him if they die before He returns. In Acts we see that being 'filled with the Spirit' occurs at different points (2:4, 4:8, 31, 9:17, 10:44). It can happen more than once (13:9, 52). We do need to be filled with Him (Eph. 5:18). We are pure, cleansed from sin, when we recieve Him ... and every time we confess our sins. Yes, we will sin - it is a struggle. Steve |

5674 | More on 1 Tim. 3:2 | 1 Tim 3:2 | Searcher56 | 6942
Hank, Titus 1:6 also supports my belief that a leader should be married, to one woman. Paul was never the permanent church leader, he moved on. So I do not think he fell under the title of being a leader. Also, by the text, I think a widower could be DQed from being a leader ... but I am not going to demand my way. I would be more vocal if the wife (who is a Christian) ran away with the postman and a divorce results. She would have to say she wasn't a Christian for him to be able to serve. Steve |

5675 | define and describe apostasy. | Bible general Archive 1 | Searcher56 | 6885
We get our word apostasy from the Greek word apostasia (a falling away, defection) the feminine form of the Greek word which means divorce. The passages in Acts and 2 The. were already cited. M@shuwbah (turning away, turning back, backsliding, faithless) is the Hebrew word. Jeremiah 3 uses the later five times (vv 6, 8, 11, 12, 22), in the NAS. He uses apostasy four other times (2:19, 5:6, 8:5; 14:7). Proverbs 1:32 calls it waywardness. Hosea 11:7 says turning from and 14:4 says that he will heal their apostasy. |

5676 | Priority in the home. | 1 Thess 4:11 | Searcher56 | 6884
1 Cor. 7:32-35 could be a passage, even look at the whole chapter. I see this as saying there is a divided interest between your mate and ministry. Luke 14:26 tells us we need to hate our family, relative to our love for God, our Master. The first commandment is love Him with your heart, soul, mand and strength (Mark 12:29). We will live with our one Master forever, our one mate for a lifetime and we may have serveral ministries in our life, for our Master may call us to move. Steve |

5677 | I want to know more about Mary's husband | Matt 1:24 | Searcher56 | 6790
The Joesph of Genesis and Mary's husband live over 40 generations apart ... - Matthew 1:1-16 gives the lineage of Christ thru Joesph, Mary's husband. The list has some gaps. The Joesph of Genesis was the brother of Judah (vv. 2-3). There is not much told about him in the Bible, we see some in the first two chapters of Matthew. - 1:18 he was engaged to Mary. - 1:19 he was a righteous man. He could of have Mary killed by the Law, but chose another way. - 1:24 he was an obedient man and chose a third way, sparing Mary. - 1:25 he was a patient man by waiting to have sex with her, tho it was he "right" - 2:13-18 he was a man of protection by taking his wife and the Child to Egypt. (More obedience) - 2:19-21 he was a man of sacrifice by living a new new place. (More obedience). Luke 2:4-5 he was a man obedient to the law of the land. -2:22-24 he was a man obedient to the Law of Moses. - We know Joesph lived until Christ was 12 (Luke 2:41-50) - 2:51 he was a man who let the Lor |

5679 | giving your tithe | 1 Cor 9:16 | Searcher56 | 6298
Mat. 6:1-4 came to mind after I submitted my response. I say give to the poor family, if the need is real. Some are poor because they do not know how to budget. You could give to a ministry to give to them or give it in secret - a plain envelope with money. Or even give to several. Rom 15:26 is another example of the collection for the poor. |

5680 | giving your tithe | 1 Cor 9:16 | Searcher56 | 6297
You do well by giving a tithe. Most church memebers do not. I think if we all did, there would be an abundance. Feel free to give where you want. I designate my tithe or offering, even when I give to the church I attend. The first example of giving to a ministry outside the church is in Acts 11:29. There are other examples. If you sense a need to give to a particular ministry, do so. As pointed out, there were three OT (Law) tithes. While the church has a budget and we need to support it (trust them), we should also feel free to give where God prompts. |
