4881 | What is God saying these days? | Ps 19:2 | DocTrinsograce | 126152
No, Aixen, this is not saying that God speaks, it is saying that His creation speaks. The key is the verse just before: Psa 19:1 "The heaves declare the glory of God and the firmament sheweth His handiwork." What this verse is saying is that the passage of day and night are part of how the heavens declare God's glory. All of nature continually declares the existence and glory of the Creator. There is structure, pattern, power, order, beauty, etc. Atheists see this every day and deny the Cause of the effect. One of the most fundamental proofs of the existance of God is that "Nothing comes from nothing." Just as bad, anamists give the glory to the things in nature themselves! For example, they worship the sun, as though the sun could bring about itself. All of these aspects of the heavens show (speak to) the power of God. They also communicate by their motion and order the passage of time and the succession of events. There is a great deal we can know by looking at the heavens. So you can see that this isn't talking about God's revelation in the sense of His eternal purpose and plan. That can be found only in the scriptures. A good hermeneutic principle is to consider every verse within the context of the surrounding verses. |

4882 | Jews at the Wailing Wall of Jerusalem | Deut 9:18 | DocTrinsograce | 126042
At one time, the Jews would fall down on their faces before the Lord. A rabbi that I know said that this rocking motion has its roots in this. The modern Jews believe that the Shakina Glory is still in the temple. Since this is the only part of temple standing, they think it is here. 4883 | What Is The Meaning Of Life? | Bible general Archive 2 | DocTrinsograce | 125946
Meaning is entirely wrapped up in purpose. The primary purpose of all men is to glorify God (Psalm 86, Isaiah 60:21, Romans 11:36, Corinthians 6:20, 31, Revelation 4:11) and to enjoy His fellowship forever (Psalm 16:5-11, Isaiah 12:2, Psalm 144:15, Luke 2:10, Philippians 4:4, Revelation 21:3-4).
4884 | birth control use | Gen 38:10 | DocTrinsograce | 125937
Many people, especially Roman Catholics, use this verse as an indictment against birth control. The entire reference is Gen 38:8-10. Here it is in the NIV: Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother." But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother. What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also. This kind of birth control is called "coitus interruptus." However, others are of the opinion that Onan's condemnation was for not wanting to father the offspring for his brother, rather than the method by which he avoided it. Scripture is not clear -- in my opinion -- except in the case of abortion. Abortion is specifically prohibitted in any form. |

4885 | Where are these words coming from? | Bible general Archive 2 | DocTrinsograce | 125919
This position is called antinomianism. It is a hetrodoxical. What kalos is talking about is the orthodox position known as "total depravity." In your opinion, stultis, when Christ said to do what the pharisees said to do, He didn't mean it? |

4887 | belonging | John 14:21 | DocTrinsograce | 125782
Mike, it isn't important what to call yourself. The important thing is what you do with the Lord Jesus Christ. Your future will depend on this single relationship, not on what church you go to or the group to which you are a member. We will be praying for you.
4888 | What does Ephesians 5:26 mean | John 17:17 | DocTrinsograce | 125777
All men are dead and defiled in (1) original sin because of Adam and (2) in specific acts of disobedience. The word "he" here refers to Christ. He saves us with the washing of regeneration (Tit 3:5). Please see Romans 10:8-9; 17; John 15:3; 17:17 for a better explanation for "word" in this passage.

4891 | chapter 14 verses 22-25 how does the pro | Bible general Archive 2 | DocTrinsograce | 125763
There are a rather lot of books that might fit this reference. The list gets a little shorter by eliminating any books in which chapter 14 in general and specificly verses 22 through 25 are not prophetic. Would you please narrow it down for us a bit? |

4894 | Rose of Sharon: what type of flower? | Josh 12:18 | DocTrinsograce | 125710
Sharon is a plain to the West of Jerusalem that extends to the Mediterean Sea. The actual rose flower is, I think, a Damascus Rose which is a very bright white in color. Perhaps this is symbolicly connecting the beauty of Christ in His holiness. I can't find the passage that speaks to the beauty of God's holiness (sorry, I've got to get to church... perhaps someone else can find it). Lasharon in Josh 12:18 refers to this plain. |

4895 | Is it ever o.k. to say no to a brother | Matt 10:16 | DocTrinsograce | 125696
Wow, hisown, this is a tough one. I would have to answer with "it depends." :-) The scripture tells us to be as wise as serpents and as harmless as doves. So I think one has to use a lot of wisdom. Remember, too, that Christ calls us to be men of our word (James 5:12), to pay our vows (Ps 22:25), not be theives (Ex 20:15), get out of debt quickly (Prov 6:1-3), and don't withhold payment (Prov 3:27). All of this comes into play. As a recovering drug adict, I never give money to someone who uses drugs. I feel strongly about this. On the other hand, if I am withholding from someone in need for my own selfish reasons, that isn't the proper motivation either. (Luke 6:30) So, again... I'd say it all depends. Sometimes there are no clear answers, only principles. |

4896 | Define Christian entertainment | John 14:12 | DocTrinsograce | 125687
I like Angel's reply. I don't know of any passages that specifically deal with the topic of entertainment. (Someone will probably object, but I think that the world needs a constant distraction in order to obviate their sense of guilt and emptiness. A lot of so called Christian music seems to be along these lines... and it also seems much more fleshly than spiritual, IMHO.) Now, this is not to say that entertainment is bad per se. After all, Christ himself was known to attend what we'd call parties today. However, He did so while glorifying and honoring God, so that would be our challange also. I guess the question is if entertainment fits Philippians 4:8 and it is not an abuse of Christian liberty, then its okay. (Now if I can only learn to put my money where my mouth is!) |

4897 | How does Romans 7 echo Paul's words | NT general Archive 1 | DocTrinsograce | 125684
I don't think the principles of each of those passages are echoed in one another, Tan. Perhaps this is why there has been no answer to your query. Although both passages mention the law, they are discussing completely different aspects of the law. At least, I don't see any connection. Of course, the fault for that might very well be in me! How do you see them linked? |

4898 | is jesus god | John 1:1 | DocTrinsograce | 125680
I assume that you meant God (capital G). Yes, He is. The word Trinity was coined by later Christians to describe the Triune nature of God. (Three Whos and one What.) There are other passages that state this clearly, including the OT (see Isaiah 9:6. Since the scriptures are God's revelation of His nature, I think of this as an important study. In theology the study of the nature of God is called "theology proper." Therefore, as a regular practice, I color the references to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with green, yellow, and pink respectively. This includes the various pronouns. As I have done this over the years, it is really amazing how the Triune Nature of God makes itself clear throughout scripture... sometimes by making it difficult to decide which color to use! :-) |

4899 | Should a Christian be a Democrat? | Bible general Archive 2 | DocTrinsograce | 125666
It is interesting that the Republican party came into being in the 1850s by a group of people coming out of the Whig party. At that time the Democratic party was pro-slavery. The Whigs kept avoiding taking up a position on this issue for fear of diseffecting some potential supporters. The Republican party was specifically formed as a reaction to this equivocation by the Whigs. Republicans wanted to change the laws of the land to insure the abolition of slavery. They wanted to form a loud voice that could speak for the slaves who could not speak for themselves. Where are the Whigs today? Today we are in a similar struggle. The Democrats are pro-abortion. The Republican party has been fairly consistently anti-abortion. However, some, fearing that some potential supporters will be dissefected, have said that the Republican party should open its arms to people on both sides of the issue. Don't they know their history? We must continue to speak for those who cannot speak. We must fight for the rights of the unempowered. If we cannot do it as Republicans, we will form a new party. Meanwhile, let us pray for that small minority whose right to life is being denied daily. |

4900 | Key verse of the Bible? | Bible general Archive 2 | DocTrinsograce | 125649
The central theme of scripture is the redemptive power of God. This theme is embodied in the very person of Christ Himself. It is difficult to choose a single passage that expresses this since there are quite a few to choose from. But I'll pick 1 Peter 1:3 (but I'll cheat and quote verses 2 through 5): "Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." |
