43 | What translation do you prefer and why? | Heb 6:6 | New Creature | 181030
"And having fallen away." I can express my own mind on this translation nearly in the words of Dr. Macknight: "The participles who were enlightened, have tasted, and were made partakers, being aorists, are properly rendered by our translators in the past time; wherefore parapesontas, being an aorist, ought likewise to have been translated in the past time, ‘HAVE fallen away.’ Nevertheless, our translators, following …… Calvin’s successor Theodore Beza, who without any authority from ancient MSS. has inserted in his version the word ‘if,’ have rendered this clause, IF they fall away, that this text might not appear to contradict the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints. But as no translator should take upon him to add to or alter the Scriptures, for the sake of any favorite doctrine, I have translated parapesontas in the past time, ‘have fallen away,’ according to the true import of the word, as standing in connection with the other aorists in the preceding verses" (Adam Clarke) |

CDBJ I don't want to address the topic of Eternal Security. My post merely is an attempt to show that there is no warrant for inserting the word "if" into Heb. 6:6. You can do a Greek word study and check it out for yourself, and you will see that this is true. Blessings NC |

49 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 WHO? | 2 Thess 2:7 | New Creature | 181024
Cuddle What if the rapture were to come today, and all those believers in whom the Holy Spirit currently indwells were taken out of this world? Would not the restraint of evil be removed from this world at the same time. In that sense the Holy Spirit truly is with us forever. He is with us, but not with the world in such a instance. 2 Thess 2:7 For the mystery of lawlessness doth already work: only there is one that restraineth now, until he be taken out of the way. Hi kalos It's just that there isn't any warrant for the use of the word "if" for Heb. 6:6. A quick look at the Greek will bear this out. The word "if" is believed to have been inserted by Calvin's sucessor Theodore Beza in an attempt to lend support to the doctrine of perseverance of the saints. Therefore the correct rendering of Heb. 6:6 is as follows: and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God, and put Him to open shame. Hi Cuddle I read the post you directed me to which was composed by Pastor John Moran. I agree with that post from him. here is something he stated in his post which I believe is important: 1) "The nature of the restraint must be supernatural." and"Both of these facts indicate that the restrainer could not be a human being." Like me, John Moran believes in the supernatural, non-human nature of the "restrainer" The only force I believe is powerful enough to restrain such lawlessness is the Holy Spirit. By the way, I don't believe John 14:6 relates to 2 Thess. 2:7 in any way. Blessings NC |

53 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 WHO? | 2 Thess 2:7 | New Creature | 180981
Hi Cuddle Let me ask you a question: If the "restrainer" mentioned in 2 Thess. 2:7 isn't referring to the Holy Spirit, then who else could this be referring to? vrese 7 says this restrainer, restrains lawlessness, and verse 8 mentions the revealing of the "lawless one" whom the Lord Jesus shall slay with the breath of his mouth. I personally don't see anyone else besides the Holy Spirit who could possibly restrain this lawless one, also called the man of sin in verse 3, whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, verse 9. No one but God has that sort of power to retrain this man of sin. Blessings NC |

54 | How deep can the Gospel go | Acts 17:30 | New Creature | 180933
Doc Compare the Edwards commentary you posted in a reply to me, in contrast with the following commentary. John 5:40 And you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. And ye will not come ... - Though the Old Testament bears evidence that I am the Messiah; though you professedly search it to learn the way to life, and though my works prove it, yet you will not come to me to obtain life. From this we may learn: 1. that life is to be obtained in Christ. He is the way, the truth, and the life, and he only can save us. 2. that, in order to do that, we must “come to him” - that is, must come in the way appointed, as lost sinners, and be willing to be saved by him alone. 3. that the reason why sinners are not saved lies in the will. “The only reason why sinners die is because ‘they will not come’ to Christ for life and happiness: it is not because they ‘cannot,’ but because they ‘will not’” (Henry). 4. Sinners have a particular opposition to going to “Jesus Christ” for eternal life. They would prefer any other way, and it is commonly not until all other means are tried that they are willing to submit to him. (Barnes Notes) "Jesus, who told some Jews in John 5:34: "I say these things that you may be saved." But "saved" they were not. Why? Because Christ added in verse 40, "You are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have life." Here is a clear case of "but ye would not," despite the clear offer of salvation." Jer. 9:6 they refuse to know me, saith the LORD. Blessings NC |

Even though the thread is 5 years old to you, it was new to me. I just now got around to reading it. Is there a rule against commenting on older threads? If I were to use your logic about "not disturbing musty archives" then I would also need to leave the Bible and all that is contained in it undisturbed as well, since it's archives are much older and mustier. Blessings NC |

Hi Doc; Without turning this into a long drawn out argument, let me just state that while I don't know much about Georgius and what else he may have believed, I don't find any fault in his comment on 1 John 2:2. And I'll leave it at that. I posted his comment on that verse for Tim, knowing he most likely would appreciate it as much as I did. But Tim can speak for himself. Blessings NC |

I have seen the following verse used in support of the idea that God cannot look upon sin. Hab 1:13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he? |

Pastor Tim You have been a real blessing to me in my studies. All the hard work you personally put into understanding God's word is now paying off in the lives of other believers such as myself. I just wanted to personally thank you for being so patient and willing to help us better understand God's word that we might grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour. Keep up the good work. From one who is watching and learning from the side-lines Thank you again, and blessings to you NC |
