Ok..MANY thoughts on salvation...Part III So what is God’s response to us today? Can a Christian lose their salvation? See: 2 Peter 2:20-22 20For if after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22It has happened to them according to the true proverb, "A dog returns to its own vomit," and, "A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire." NAS But is this person Peter speaks of really a Christian or an imposter? See further: James 5:19-20 19My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth, and one turns him back, 20let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins. NAS It is pretty clear that God means to tell us that it is our brethren, Christians, who we must help turn back if they stray from the truth. See further: He 10:26-31 26For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. 28Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay." And again, "The Lord will judge His people." 31It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God. NAS Jude 3-5 3Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. 4For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. 5Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. NAS ROM 11:17-24 17But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree, 18do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. 19You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." 20Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear; 21for if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will He spare you. 22Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God's kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. 23And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in again. 24For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more shall these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree? NAS Finally, let us be reminded of our purpose to obey God: Phil 2:12-13 12So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; 13for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. NAS Persevere under trial; for once you have been approved, you will receive the crown of life, which our Lord has promised to all of us who obey Him. |

You pose an excellent question, "I do want to ask you one thing, Overseer: you say that one needs to be water-baptized to have salvation. When was the thief on the cross baptized?". The answer lies in the convenant under which the thief died. Water baptism into the body of Christ occured after the reciept of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentacost. Prior to that, it was not mentioned. For those that want to be arguementative, Jesus certainly could have made an exception for the thief. There are none since, to our knowledge. |

"..then who were the church members during that long interim and what did they call themselves?" Answer: Christians Christians have walked the earth since Christ formed the church. They just have not named themselves, written a book about their history, bought public church property, advertised for new members or registered with governments for tax exempt status. Hard to believe? See: 1 Kings 19:13-18 13And it came about when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 14Then he said, "I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, torn down Thine altars and killed Thy prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away." 15And the LORD said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and when you have arrived, you shall anoint Hazael king over Aram; 16and Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. 17And it shall come about, the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall put to death. 18Yet I will leave 7,000 in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him." NAS Even a chosen prophet of God was unaware of those who had chosen to remain faithful to God. Likewise the Church persists from the day of Pentecost to today! |

Why are you assuming the "Church of Christ" is the true church? Where, for that matter, does God say you can choose the church of your choice? Why do you believe you can worship God in any manner you chose rather than worshiping as the Creator has directed? Nadab and Abihu made that mistake and received the punishment for their error: Lev 10:1-3 10:1Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. 2And fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. 3Then Moses said to Aaron, "It is what the LORD spoke, saying, 'By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy, And before all the people I will be honored.'" So Aaron, therefore, kept silent. NAS God is very explicit in how He desires to be worshiped. |

The age of 18 is simply the age that people are accorded legal rights as adults in the United States and with that an implied ability to be responsible. The responsibility of a Christian is to accurately handle the word of God. Note that my response to Cicybaby12 was not that age 18 was the given age; simply that age 18 is normally one of responsibility; ability and finally credibility. For some people it could be younger; others much older. Why do people find it so difficult to obey All the commands of God? Should we pick and chose those things which are convenient? |

You stated, "I haven't found any passage where a person is held accountable for something he doesn't understand. God treats ignorance with mercy (1 Tim 1:13 and Heb 5:2).". Try these: Job 36:12 12"But if they do not hear, they shall perish by the sword, And they shall die without knowledge. NAS Prov 19:2 2Also it is not good for a person to be without knowledge, And he who makes haste with his feet errs. NAS Isa 27:11 11When its limbs are dry, they are broken off; Women come and make a fire with them. For they are not a people of discernment, Therefore their Maker will not have compassion on them. And their Creator will not be gracious to them. NAS Jer 5:3-4 3O LORD, do not Thine eyes look for truth? Thou hast smitten them, But they did not weaken; Thou hast consumed them, But they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; They have refused to repent. 4Then I said, "They are only the poor, They are foolish; For they do not know the way of the LORD Or the ordinance of their God. NAS Matt 15:14 14"Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit." NAS 2 Cor 4:3-4 3And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. NAS Hos 4:6 6My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. NAS |

Estelle, PLease forgive me as I have not had the chance to fully reply to your response. In my studies today, however, I believe I may have found a passage you may find more conclusive. Lev 5:17-18 17"Now if a person sins and does any of the things which the LORD has commanded not to be done, though he was unaware, still he is guilty, and shall bear his punishment. Yampa, Would you agree that only those people who love God will go to heaven? For many folks the concept of loving God is lumped into the same situation as loving your family, friend or spouse, yet they are different. Loving God does not mean you have a closeness to Him like your spouse. God is our creator, and as such, He is revered with fear; reverence for His position and the obligations He places on His people; fear of the consequences of not pleasing Him. Thus, as John 14:15 states, "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments" and Hebrews 5:9, "And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation". Obedience to God's commands is necessary to have salvation. Yet your question as to how a Christian loses their salvation is excellent and is plain to understand. If all sin is a separation from God and all people sin (even Christians) how can anyone be saved? Repentence; God gave Christians the ability to acknowledge their sin and turn away from it and back to God. But here comes the key...their actions must speak louder than their words! Just like you wouldn't believe my apology for hitting you in the face for the second or third time, unless I actually did something to demonstrate my sincerity. Talk is cheap and everyone knows that, especially God! James 1:21-22 22But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. NAS Does this trivialize the blood of Christ? Of course not! Without the sheding of Christ's blood their would be no forgiveness of sin. It is the notion that a Christian has no obligation to work that is an afront to God. Christianity is not a complex or confusing religion. It is Satan that has made it that way in the minds of man. The only faith needed is that God exists and that people exist to serve Him. Once you understand what God requires, the balance is simple. AO |

Justme, I agree, many people do go to great lengths to prove their assertions. God is not a God of confusion, is he? Why must scripture be interpreted through the prism of what we want it to be rather than just reading it for what it says? Heb 6:4-6 4For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God, and put Him to open shame. NAS Can you clarify this? AO |

John, Rom 9:14-16 14What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be! 15For He says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." 16So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy. NAS Some people say this passage speaks of man's inability to change the master plan of God, and that His plan is for man to chose Him. Mankind can not change the plan, but they can change their role in it. Does that make salvation centered on man or God? AO |
