41 | Whose Name is on #12 | Rev 21:14 | DocTrinsograce | 126310
The disciples drew lots in order to pick the 12th apostle (Acts 1:26). This they did prior to Pentecost, in spite of the fact that Christ had instructed them to go to Jerusalem and wait (Acts 1:4). We never hear of Matthias again. Later, however, we find that Paul becomes an apostle (see the first verse of the first chapter of most of his epistles). Paul clearly tells us that God chose him to be an apostle. Will Matthias or Paul be on the 12th foundation stone? If Paul, then the disciples must have erred in trying to move ahead of the Lord's will. |

42 | Toad Sticker or Not | Luke 22:36 | DocTrinsograce | 126165
Why did Christ instruct the Disciples to obtain swords (which they did in verse 38)? Earlier He had told them not to carry swords. Later that evening He would even intervene when Peter, the fisherman -- no swordsman he -- made an attack on one of the temple servants. Why do you think Christ went back and forth like this on the question of carrying weapons?
43 | Torah vs Mishna | Bible general Archive 2 | DocTrinsograce | 125952
You state that the Pharisees taught the Law. But is this all that they taught? In addition to the Torah (Moses Law) they were also teaching the Mishna (the oral traditions of Moses' 70 elders). The former is often preceded by "it is written." The latter the latter is often preceded by , "it is said." Yet Christ said "whatsoever" they bid you do, do. Nevertheless, this is the same stuff that Christ condemned as "replacing the law by the traditions of men." What do you make of that?
44 | A Command of Jesus | Bible general Archive 2 | DocTrinsograce | 125932
Dear stultis, please forgive me. I did not seek to mock in any way. I have the heart of a teacher, so I explain and ask questions. Sometimes it is difficult in this format to accurately express ourselves. I never mean to be condescending or mocking. I am far too aware of my own inadequacies. I am a very poor and imperfect follower of our Lord and Savior. I have failed Him far too many times. Even in my best obedience I often spoil it by stealing His glory through spiritual pride. How could I condescend to or mock any child of our Lord knowing my own faults and failings so well? Perhaps the tone came off the way it did because I posted my question in haste. I have a teachers heart so I tend to explain or question. I hope that you will forgive me. The passage that I was referring to was Mat 23:1-3 which I have pasted here: (1) Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, (2) Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: (3) All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. Here Christ tells both his disciples and the crowd around him to do what the Pharisees say they ought to do. Based on your previous posts I wondered how you interpretted this passage. |

45 | No Wine vs Not Much Wine | Luke 1:15 | DocTrinsograce | 125725
Bishops (presbytos) in 1 Tim 3:3 and Tit 1:7 are not to be given to wine. However, a deacon in 1 Tim 3:8 must not be given to much wine. Likewise, the aged women are not to be given to much wine per Tit 2:3. Do you think there it is significant that an elder must not be given to wine but the others not to MUCH wine?
46 | His Chosen Angels | 1 Tim 5:21 | DocTrinsograce | 125650
This verse is the only one in scripture to use the adjective "chosen" associated with angels. Therefore, any conclusions we can derive from this expression will be speculative at best. Please give your opinion regarding this expression "chosen angels."
47 | Who is the subject? (continued) | Heb 4:10 | DocTrinsograce | 125395
Thank you for your comments, Hank. I agree that believers are mentioned in both verses... and in each case they are plural in the Greek: Verse 9 "people", verse 11 "us" and "men." However, each pronoun in verse 10 is singular in the Greek. Why would the writer change from plural to singular and back to plural again if the subject did not change?
48 | Apagachomai | Acts 1:23 | DocTrinsograce | 125394
Here is the Strong's entry for "hanged" in Matthew 27:5: ap-ang-khom-ahee From G575 and agcho(to choke; akin to the base of G43); to strangle oneself off (that is, to death): - hang himself. |

49 | Who is the subject of this verse? | Heb 4:10 | DocTrinsograce | 125383
Some commentaries state that the "one" mentioned in this verse is the believer. While others indicate that this is not to be understood as the believer, but rather as Jesus Christ Himself. Frankly, I rather prefer the latter interpretation since it fits so nicely in with the rest of the chapter. I am curious about how others might see this. If you would be so kind as to respond, if possible please substantiate your opinion with scripture. :-) |

50 | How do you humble yourself? | James 4:10 | DocTrinsograce | 125252
"God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble" is an aphorism that is repeated in James 4:6 and in 1 Peter 5:5. In my experience, humility has only come through humiliation, and I am thankful to the Lord for His Hebrews 12 ministrations! Nevertheless, this passage calls us to actively humble ourselves. I am interested in knowing how others believe this is done. Is this strictly a matter of how we "reckon" ourselves? Has anyone found a way to implement this in their daily walk with our Lord? |

51 | "What things?" | Luke 24:19 | DocTrinsograce | 125243
In this verse Christ is responding to a question with a question. The disciples asked Him "Are you a stranger who does not know these things?" Although He does not yet reveal Himself, so he supports their assumption that He is a stranger who hasn't heard the latest news. We know that God cannot lie... clearly this cannot be construed as a falsehood. Nevertheless, it does sound misleading. What do you think about this?
52 | Crucified with Christ | Gal 2:20 | DocTrinsograce | 125242
Paul uses the phrase "I am crucified with Christ." This is not the only epistle in which he uses language like this. (See Romans and elsewhere.) I am curious to know how others see this phrase. Do you see it as a metaphore, or do you think that in some more literal way we are crucified right along with Christ in His crucifiction? |
