4081 | A SIN TO FILE BANKRUPTCY | 1 Pet 4:10 | Hank | 130105
Emmaus, rarely does a week go by that my wife and I don't get at least a couple of credit card offers. Not long ago I said to her, "Why don't we accept them all, max them out, and with all that dough, retreat to a very private Shangri-la somewhere in Borneo." At least there are pleasant aspects to the sinister thought. :-) And perhaps it would teach the credit card companies a much-needed lesson to be more prudent and responsible with their lavish offers of 'easy' credit -- and stop bugging the public to death with junk phone calls and mailings. --Hank
4082 | MARY--HONOR OR ADORATION? | 1 Pet 5:7 | Hank | 26997
Kalos, in your eight-part post on "Mary -- Honor or Adoration" you have presented in a systematic manner an alternate view of the Roman Catholic dogmas on this subject. In so doing you have presented to the forum considerable background material and dissenting points of view that gives balance to the considerable numbers of postings heretofore made on the forum that promote the Catholic point of view. It is thus clear to this writer that such a documented presentation as your have made serves better to counterbalance the presentation of the Catholic points of view on this subject than do oceans of bitter debates that are prone to lead to personal assaults and insults. It is much more to my liking to be presented the issues in their fullness from both sides and be able to pick and choose for myself which is more likely the truer course, using to the best of my ability the word of God as my plumb-line. --Hank
4083 | casting our cares on Jesus | 1 Pet 5:7 | Hank | 108680
Mommapbs - I like your analogy, I like your tone, I like your answer. You are, in my humble but precisely right view :-) a gem that reflects light to this Forum. --Hank
4084 | casting our cares on Jesus | 1 Pet 5:7 | Hank | 108685
Mommapbs - Update on my dear wife's reading marathon. She's deep into Oswald Chambers' daily meditations, "My Utmost For His Highest." She pays absolutely no heed to dates, but plunges on relentlessly. Come to think of it, when we were dating, she paid little attention to dates then, not even me :-) --Hank
4085 | How did Peter die? | 2 Peter | Hank | 42168
"Preach the gospel in all types of bodies." -- Skinny ones? Fat ones? Live ones? DEAD ones?? Hmmm..... In what chapter and book do we find this exciting tale?.... I seem unable to recall off-hand. Perhaps it was in an Edgar Allan Poe story, or Bram Stoker, or even Stephen King. --Hank
4086 | Dr. Rebecca Brown? | 2 Pet 1:3 | Hank | 153324
journey_me: To you and to everyone else who'd like to equip themselves the better to convey the message of Scripture to their mothers-in-law and everybody else in their lives, I cannot recommend too highly a little book by R. C. Sproul called "Knowing Scripture." Infinitely more useful and certainly more orthodox than anything Rebecca Brown has written, it is a book to read, and to read again and again, until one gains a fair mastery of its timeless principles of sound exegesis and learns how to apply them to the study of the Bible. The book can be purchased on-line for under 10 dollars at such sites as Amazon and CBD. If you are genuinely interested in "knowing Scripture," buy this book. --Hank

4088 | CONDITIONAL ETERNAL SECURITY | 2 Pet 1:10 | Hank | 62598
I agree entirely, CDBJ, the passage in Hebrews 6 is a hypothetical. I like Charles Spurgeon's classic sermon on this passage, which can be accessed at www.Spurgeon.org. If this passage teaches that a regenerate believer can lose his salvation (which I firmly believe it does not), then it also teaches that it can never been regained. There is no example in all of Scripture of anyone who was saved twice. This is a good thread with a good theme, by the way, and can be very instructive if, of course, we the participants in it exert restraint so that it doesn't deteriorate into a shouting match and take great care that it is calmly explored based on what Scripture actually teaches on the subject. So far, so good! Blessings, Chuck. --Hank
4089 | CONDITIONAL ETERNAL SECURITY | 2 Pet 1:10 | Hank | 62599
Teregram123, this is an interesting phrase that you have introduced: conditional eternal security. Is it a biblical term, do you suppose, or is it a term that, while not stated in Scripture in so many words, can be justly supported by scriptural doctrine? It seems to me -- and I confess to being no theologian -- that something there is about the term that smacks of internal contradiction. I mean this: is it possible to be the recipient of God's gift of grace, i.e., salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, and yet have certain strings attached to it? And what are those strings? Works, perhaps? But that takes us back, doesn't it, to the faith plus works equation, which in fact denies that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. What I am saying is that once we begin to attach qualifying adjectives such as "conditional" to a term such as "eternal security" or to the word "salvation" itself, are we not treading into dangerous waters? I restrict this particular post to these questions first and will not venture into the other issues addressed in your rather complex and many-faceted question-essay except to note that in your reference to the New Testament teaching about backsliding, the word "backslidng" never appears in the New Testament. A final thought: I join my friend BradK in inviting you to post a note about yourself in the user profile section so that we may come to know you a little bit better. Cordially, --Hank
4090 | who wrote the bible and when was it firs | 2 Pet 1:21 | Hank | 84358
Misskitty: I'd suggest your best approach to the question of who (meaning, in this instance, human authors) wrote the Bible and when is to consider each book of the Bible separately. The corpus of the entire Bible was written over a span of literally hundreds of years and is the product of some 40 human writers. My hunch is that you want to equip yourself with a general over-all knowledge of such things as the the dates, authors, and possibly of the historical settings, themes and purposes of the books that comprise the Old and New Testament canons, without getting bogged down with details that are of interest primarily to professional biblical scholars and theologians. If this is the case, then I'd recommend two resources. A number of reference Bibles have excellent introductions to each book of the Bible, and Bible dictionaries have alphabetically arranged entries on each book in the Bible. Either or both of these resources should provide you with material that will enhance your understanding and appreciation of "how we got our Bible." While browsing through a Bible dictionary, you might also wish to read the entries on manuscripts and translations as well as entries on major characters in Scripture, e.g., Jesus Christ, Adam, Job, Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, David, Solomon, John the Baptist, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John (the apostle), Peter and Paul. --Hank
4091 | 1 tim 4:1-2 | 2 Pet 2:1 | Hank | 86283
Scribe, perhaps in your encounter with the Mormon lads you were less than what is considered "politically correct" in the polite, compromising society of our time, but what you said to them certainly echoes what Jesus said to the scribes and Pharisees in John 8:24 and in Matthew 23. Jesus wasn't politically correct either, and He spoke candidly and never minced words. I wonder whether Christians err when they speak too softly and too delicately about the realities of life and death, heaven and hell, sin and salvation. Is it I wonder out of timidity and fear of reprisal that so many modern Christians are reluctant to tell it like it is, or is it their apathy that robs their words of fire and conviction? Or are they lame and ineffective because they are simply too lazy and indolent to obey the commands issued in 2 Timothy 2:15 and 1 Peter 3:15? My many years as a Bible school teacher have convinced me that an alarming percentage of confessing Christians are able neither to teach or preach the gospel of Christ nor to defend it. --Hank
4092 | quick response on creation vs evolution | 2 Pet 2:1 | Hank | 121983
hvnscry: Along with user "following him" I recommend the icr.org web site to anyone who is interested in the creationism/evolution issue from biblical and scientific perspectives. I see many problems with the "guided evolution" idea that are inconsistenct with the creation account in Genesis. To name but two: [1] It is inconsistent with the six days of creation. In order to subscribe to the "guided evolution" theory, one must read into "day" in Genesis a meaning other than a 24-hour day. Thus we begin the interpretation of Genesis by saying that the words used in the text don't really mean what they say. One is immediately faced with the task of trying to explain away the narrative by ascribing to it allegorical or symbolical meanings. Yes, Scripture does contain symbolical language, but when it does, it is generally quite obvious from the context. [2] The largest problem with "guided evolution" lies in the story of the fall of man in Eden. This event is absolutely foundational to all of Scripture. If man (Adam) evolved from lower forms of life, at what point did this evolving creature become fully a man capable of disobedience and accountable to God? ....... I've studied this issue a great deal and have come to a firm conviction that what God says plainly in Genesis about creation is the way it was. For me at least, it takes less faith and less explaining to believe the biblical account of creation than the theory of evolution, whether Darwin's theory or the hybrid "guided evolution" theory. ...... Please do visit the icr.org web site. I believe you will really enjoy exploring it. ....... Evolution is a theory, nothing more. In all the years since "Origin of Species" was published, the theory has never "evolved" into scientific fact. What bothers me most about the evolutionists is not so much their espousal of the theory but their insistence on teaching it as scientific fact. Now I'm not indicating that you are doing this. ....... A word about Bible geneologies. In view of the great number of geneologies that God's word contains, including two of our Lord in the New Testament, in Matthew and Luke, I would not at all second the statement that "the geneologies argument means nothing." I don't believe the Bible contains anything that means nothing. 2 Timothy 3:16. --Hank
4093 | the angels that sinned | 2 Pet 2:4 | Hank | 96846
Truthfinder - Wouldn't you be horrified when you stand before Jesus Christ, and you will some day, to find that your 40-year research has been all for nought, that you had been wrong, that the Jesus of Nazareth who walked upon this earth really was God Incarnate? ..... "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bond-servant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death on the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:5-11). ...... Even you, Truthfinder, will confess some day who Jesus really is, and your 40-year research that has mis-lead you to believe otherwise will be a worthless exercise in futility. --Hank
4094 | Please explain this "pure blood line". | 2 Pet 2:4 | Hank | 96906
Dairyleader5 - In the King James English of Genesis 1:28, "replenish" simply means "to fill." See my Post # 8029. --Hank
4095 | Please explain this "pure blood line". | 2 Pet 2:4 | Hank | 96909
Darcy, I've long been aware of the existence of a period between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. That period is a punctuation mark and nothing more. [You will notice that there is a period (.) at the end of Genesis 1:1 after the word "earth."] ..... Don't tell me you've been zapped by the gap -- the Gap Theory! Verse 1 is a summary statement: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Verse 2 and following pick up the narrative and describe the sequence of events pertaining to God's creation. No "gaps" in the creative process are stated or implied. There is to my knowledge no revelation in Scripture that provides enough evidence on which to build an hypothesis of when God created angels or when Satan fell. Similarly, with the date of His creation of the heavens and the earth. No scientist has ever been able to pinpoint that. We know as much about the time of creation as any scientist knows (but is not likely to admit). We know that God created the heavens and the earth "in the beginning" because the Bible tells us so. --Hank

4097 | were angels saved by works? | 2 Pet 2:4 | Hank | 97679
Dairy Leader 5 - The term is "antediluvian" not "Ante-Diluvial" and it refers to the period from Adam to Noah's flood, not to any "pre-Adamic" race. --Hank
4098 | were angels saved by works? | 2 Pet 2:4 | Hank | 97699
Dairy Leader 5 - For the second time this evening, friend, I beg to disagree! No, in my estimation, John has not ignored the subject but answered it quite well. And yes, I agree with you that there are evil spirits. But no, I don't agree that evil and evil spirits are the same. "Evil" is a word used to describe the attributes of the spirits. It is not the spirits themselves. Do you dig? --Hank
4099 | were angels saved by works? | 2 Pet 2:4 | Hank | 97708
DL5 - Perhaps a couple of questions will help you to fix and clarify your thoughts. Is God the creator of all things? Is evil a created thing? If evil is a created thing, and God created all things, then God created evil? If God created all things but He did not create evil, then evil is not a created thing, isn't that true? And if evil is not a created thing, then it must be something else, do you agree? And if it is something else, it cannot be a created thing, won't you also agree? --Hank
4100 | Why is the thread associated with ID# .. | 2 Pet 2:4 | Hank | 127362
Country Girl, you made a reasonable and, I believe, correct assessment of why the thread in question was suppressed. The Lockman Foundation has equipped the Forum with certain means of keeping objectionable posts (and users) from side tracking its Forum with unscriptural and otherwise objectionable material. One is suppression of a thread that contains objectionable material. Other measures include advisories and warnings to offensive users and, when needed, revocation of a user's privlege to post to the Forum. Thank you, Country Girl, for your explanatory note. May God bless you richly. --Hank
