Val :: Kind words well written. Thanks for your participation on SBF, Val. Your presence is keenly felt. You are an asset and a blessing to this Forum. Down here in the Ozarks where I live, most of us don't have one of them there fancy red carpets to welcome folks with. But we say to our favorite folks what I will now say to you: Howdy, neighbor, it's mighty fine to have you with us. Won't you come in and sit a spell with us, and have a cool drink of spring water?" Now you have been officially welcomed the Ozark way. Nice, ain't it? :-) Blessings, sister. --Hank
2 | spiritual or religious? | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 194895
pberardi :: "Religion is a man-made thing while spirituality is of the Father." .......Col. 3.23 speaks of "self-made religion" and James 1:27 of "pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God." The Greek words that support the translation "religious" in both verses are quite different. In the former, the translaltion of "self-made religion" (NASB) does not carry the same meaning at all as "pure and undefiled religion" in the latter. Therefore, it cannot be argued that the word "religion"as Scripture uses it always has the negative connotation of being a "man-made thing." As there can be a true doctrine and a false doctrine, so can there be a true religion and a false religion. Orthodox Christianity is true religion, whereas pagan religions are false. When John Calvin chose to call his opus magnum, "The Institutes of the Christian Religion," one should not think that this great Reformer in any way intended to intimate that the Christian religion is a "man-made thing." I'm not sure exactly what you meant when you used the word "spirituality," according it a nobler place than the word "religion," but I am convinced that Scripture does not always use the word "religion" in a disparaging sense at all and neither should we. It all depends on the context. --Hank

Preston :: By any measure it seems to me that Tyndale, for all that that devoted man did in his life, earns an immensely more honored place in the history books that merely to fill space. I would think it most presumptuous and crass of me should I, a virtual nobody, dare be so brash as to pass such harsh judgment upon so noble a scholarly saint as William Tyndale. Besides, critics don't usually fare very well, for in all the annals of history one is hard pressed to find any record of a statue having been erected in honor of a critic. --Hank

Greetings to TC from Coventry :: Thank you for the helpful hints about the the Cambridge University Press series of Pitt Minion Bibles. I'd read something of the history of this series before, but the details had escaped me, although I remembered that the font size was rather small, too small for a septuagenarian like me to read with comfort. Dr. Steeno :: Two questions and two suggestions.... First, the questions: (1) You say, "The Lord's prayer does not apply." Does not apply to what, and why? (2) You call yourself Dr. Steeno, so in what field do you hold your doctorate? ....... Now the suggestions. ..... (1) That you make every possible effort to substantiate and authenticate your theological propositions by the generous use of Scripture, citing book, chapter and verse wherever possible. (2) That you fill in your personal profile which can be accessed by clicking on your user name in any of your posts. The information thus afforded to your peers in your personal profile may very well help them better to understand you and your views. ...... I trust that you will enjoy using Study Bible Forum and profit by it yourself as well as being a source of help and inspiration to others. Those of us who have been Forum readers and contributors for some years prize the value of maintaining a harmonious relationship with our peers as much as possible, thus averting acrimony and ill-will among the participants. --Hank

Hi, Val :: Wearing hearing aids, as I must if I wish to hear much of anything, is not necessarily a fun thing and can be a real nuisance sometimes, but it does have its advantages. For example, suppose I should be so unfortunate as to find myself sitting in the audience when this woman began speaking of her experiences of seeing visions, or hearing things go 'bump' in the night, or whatever. That would be my cue to turn my hearing aids completely off. That way I could also turn her off, open my Bible and read, and later be able to tell my friends truthfully what a wonderful time I had at the lecture! --Hank
8 | Seeing things? | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 200102
Hello, Val :: Yes, in my homespun attempt at humor, I was indeed saying the substance of this woman's "vision" or whatever it was is not to be taken seriously. This is not to say, however, that your friendship with her should be cast aside. There come times when the role of a true friend is to disagree agreeably and if necessary to make every effort to steer that friend to a third party, as it were, for additional counsel. In this case it could well be a minister who is not only full of wisdom and experience but who himself holds fast to sound doctrine which clearly includes and embraces the sufficiency of Scripture. Val, you come across on the Forum as a gracious and tactful person. By all means use your gifts of grace and tact in dealing with your friend, but at the same time be diligent not to compromise the whole truth out of fear of offending, even though it may be painful for both the herald and the hearer. But I would suggest that you do symbolically what I would do literally, and that is to turn your hearing aids off when she starts to recount her "visionary experience." ...... You have received some fine responses (mine excluded) to your concern. Doc gave an especially excellent example right out of God's word. You might try using it. It would be a telling test of whether this person favors objective, scripturally sound doctrine over her own private dream-world of experiential "reality." I pray that God will make a way for you to deal wisely and within His will with your friend and that she in turn will not turn a deaf ear to the truth. --Hank

Hello, Justme. You're right about the odd way hearing aids have of amplifying some things such as eating. When one is eating Jello it sounds to him like he's chomping on crisp celery! ..... Regarding the near-death experiences, you've asked me a question that I am not qualified to comment on, for on this subject I make no claim whatever to expertise. At the same time, however, I am not at all prone to get carried away by the books and articles floating around that report on these phenomena and usually attempt to promote their credibility. They border far too much on the occult and the metaphysical for me, and my personal position is that the Christian would be wise to concern himself with things of Scripture, which are of immensely greater importance. If I get an urge to tweak my little gray cells with a touch of diversion, I'd sooner work a crossword puzzle or read an Agatha Christie whodunit. :-) --Hank

John, better to count kinda slow than not at all I suppose. Most of my neighbors here in the Ozarks can't count past 10 without taking their shoes off. But the good news is that most of them don't wear shoes anyhow. :-) --Hank

Hello, Michael :: This is something I've been meaning to do for a long time. You are now in your fifth year as a registrant of and contributor to Study Bible Forum, but we have not the pleasure of reading your personal profile because none exists! Now it is far from my intent to obtrude upon your privacy by asking your to reveal any personal information that you'd prefer to keep private, but nearly all of us veterans of SBF have entered certain items of information about ourselves that are designed to help our peers know us a little better. If you have not already done so, a visit to the personal profile page of some of the regular users will give you some idea of the kinds of data that other users have chosen to include in their profiles. It's good to have you as a regular on SBF, Michael. Won't you consider adding a personal profile? It would help us to get to know you a little bit better. Very cordially, --Hank.

TJS :: A conflict not unlike that of which you speak and with which believers wrestle day by day was by no means foreign to the apostle Paul. He discusses it in Romans 7. Verses 15 through 25 present a profound insight into the spiritual and psychological struggles within the believer between two natures, the old sin nature and the divine nature received at the point of regeneration. The passage shows that self-effort cannot achieve holiness through keeping of the law or win the struggle against indwelling sin. Actually, one should read and study Paul's argument all the way from the beginning of Romans 6 through Romans 8 in order to attain a more lucid understanding of it. --Hank

20 | What mother was commended by Paul? | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 203094
Dear DLorddaughter :: Please try to avoid taking umbrage at the feedback your many questions have engendered. Words standing alone on a screen have a way of appearing stark and harsh at times. There is no way by which your correspondents are able to soften them with the warmth of a smile, the friendly clasp of a handshake, or the disarming sparkle in the eyes that brings loving animation of countenance. I do not believe, and beg you not to believe, that any of the respondents to your posts intended to convey a mean and unloving spirit, because I am convinced that none of them are in fact mean and unloving. We none of us always choose the right words to reflect our real thoughts and feelings, so perhaps in some of the responses you've received, the words betray the true meaning that the author intended. ...... Looking at the situation in retrospect, it becomes fairly easy to understand why it has been inferred that some of your questions had their generation in sources outside yourself. To cite two examples: your question (Post 196694) asked, "Who pleaded with God not to destroy a city?" My question is, unless you had read and knew the answer from your study of Scripture, how would you otherwise know that anyone pleaded with God to destroy a city? ...... The second question in the example is Post 203055 in which you ask, "What mother was commended by Paul?" Same situation: how did you know that Paul commended any mother? ...... Are you now better able to understand the concern of your Forum peers? It is not that there is any ban on asking Bible-based questions. On the contrary, it is basically a question-and-answer format that this web site uses. This is not the problem. The problem lies in the fact that your questions were constructed in a way that is very typical of "homework" questions -- questions that read as though they came straight from a textbook. And it is an unwritten code of the Forum, as it were, that Bible students should do their own homework -- should roll up their sleeves and dig in on their own and do their own research -- and not have someone else do it for them. In looking for an easy fix, they are not only being unfair to the teacher and their classmates, but they are being unfair especially to themselves. There is no magic yellow-brick road to learning. Studying is hard work and demands our best efforts, as the Scripture says, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15, ESV). ..... An afterthought. You are most welcome to continue to study and learn with us, as together we seek to follow our Lord ever more nearly and to love Him ever more dearly. The hand of friendship and fellowship is most assuredly extended to you. --Hank
