if you add todays applicability to strictly any part of your answer or question, it is theology, right so it disqualifies nearly every answer so far, right so what are you really talking about when you say no discussion |

307 | What do we learn from praying | Bible general Archive 4 | azurelaw | 195800
Mat 6:9-15, 26:39, Mark 17, Act 7:60 What a privilege is "praying" granted to us by our most gracious God! So, what do we learn from praying... - to be submissive and obedient - to trust - to examine ourselves - to forgive - to ask for forgiveness - to humble ourselves - to love More inputs and enlightenment are VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. 310 | The Prettiest "New American Bible"? | Bible general Archive 4 | andrewset | 195871
Hello, I decided I'm going to read the whole Bible, front to back, followed by the Catechism of the Catholic Church, (aka the Newer Testament :P just kidding) by separating them out as evenly as possible throughout the upcoming year of 2008, starting on New Years Day and finishing before 2009. I want to select the prettiest updated New American Bible I can afford, a Bible I can be proud of calling the one I read everything from, since I'm committing myself to doing this. The kind of Bible someone would want to be buried with. I imagine a perty hardcover one of a dark color, possibly with elaborate ornate gold designs on it. Something like that. Full-color paintings inside it somewhere would be a plus, as well as a larger text size, but not necessary. I'm also used to each page being split up into 2 columns, not just 1. My current Bible is 'The New American Bible,' and the latest date I can find printed in it is 1991, (Revised Psalms) so as long as the new Bible is a New American Bible of 1991 or newer, that's fine. (It's a red paperback Bible with a white cross design on the front, that many of you probably know of.) If you could point me to any website or bookstore that may have a pretty New American Bible that I'd like, please let me know. Or whatever other description that would point me to it, such as the publisher or so forth. Thank you |

315 | Why God killed boys for teasing Elisha | Bible general Archive 4 | Scholarly Beau | 195932
Bible Questions Question 1: 2 Kings 2:23-26 This Story depicts Elisha acting very rashly; it also incurs divine intervention on behalf of Elisha for at surface level a very minor offense. Please if you can explain how a God of love and Peace. A God of Righteousness and Justice would condemn 42 youths Children to death based upon Childish teasing… The following is what I have found upon this subject through study of 17 translations of Scripture. Please review before making an answer The NIV and several other translations listed here are Neutral as to the age of the Lads, Youth, Boys Taunting Elisha Other Neutral versions include: 1. New Living Translation depicts Boys no age 2. Contemporary English Version Boys No age 3. New King James Youths No age 4. New Century Version No age Neutral NIV Text: 2 Kings 2:23-26 23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some youths came out of the town and jeered at him. "Go on up, you baldhead!" they said. "Go on up, you baldhead!" 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths. 25 And he went on to Mount Carmel and from there returned to Samaria. Thoughts What is the Age of a Youth? If two bears Mauled 42 of the Youths How many were there to begin with? What were 50 possible "youths" doing taunting a Prophet ------------------------------------- Further Investigation ------------------------------------- Some Translations Indicate Children: The message reads: 2 Kings 2:23-26 Note in this translation there are little kids. Also note the change to exclamation at the end of the sentence. Is this the translation or the Writer? 23 Another time, Elisha was on his way to Bethel and some little kids came out from the town and taunted him, "What's up, old baldhead! Out of our way, skinhead!" 24 Elisha turned, took one look at them, and cursed them in the name of God. Two bears charged out of the underbrush and knocked them about, ripping them limb from limb—forty-two children in all! Other Translations that indicate little children: 1. King James Little Children 2. English Standard version Small boys 3. 21st Century King James Little Children 4. Young’s Literal Translation Little Youths 5. Darby Translation Little Boys 6. New Life version Young boys 7. Holman Christian Bible Small boys ------------------------------------- Further Investigation ------------------------------------- Some Translations Indicate Teens or Young Men The Amplified Bible Reads: 2 Kings 2:23-26 Note they are Maturing and accountable. Note also the lack of exclamation used in this case 23He went up from Jericho to Bethel. On the way, ayoung [maturing and accountable boys came out of the city and mocked him and said to him, Go up in a whirlwind, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead! 24And he turned around and looked at them and called a curse down on them in the name of the Lord. And two she-bears came out of the woods and ripped up forty-two of the boys. Other Translations that indicate Young men 1. American Standard Version Young Lads 2. New American Standard Young Lads 3. New international Readers version Young Fellows -------------------------------------- Whether the boys in question are little boys or maturing men is in need of clarification. Why so many boys? Were they just making fun? Further the prophet cursed them but the prophet didn’t control the bears. This suggests Divine Intervention. Let me know your thoughts please. |

318 | Pitt Minion format? | Bible general Archive 4 | skccab | 195979
Hi all, This is a question about Bibles proper. I am wishing to purchase a Cambridge Bible for my brother (with income tax return). (If there are better Bibles out there, let me know.) I've been to Cambridge website and they have a large variety to choose from - but I cannot find out what "Pitt Minion" is. I've googled it and can't find what it is other than some kind of format. Does anyone know if it's a good format, what makes it different from Cambridge's other (regular, I guess) format? Thanks for the help. It's a very special brother I'm wanting this for - so it's got to be a very special (for the rest of his life) Bible :-) Cheri |

319 | A prophet | Bible general Archive 4 | azurelaw | 196053
Jeremiah 18:18, 26:8 Jeremiah was being persecuted by many and even at edge of death for his prophesying which the people claimed as false. I want to know what was the status of a prophet at the time of Jeremiah's. In Ch 27 v1-15, what Jeremiah said appeared to show him a betrayer (base on a national perspective). It is interesting to see those priests and other prophets did not charge Jeremiah for his betrayal discourse, but false prophesying. Your input and enlightenment is appreciated. Shalom Azure |

320 | What is the reason God is speaking of ? | Bible general Archive 4 | cknotes247 | 196059
In this verse of Genesis: The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. Gen 2:23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." Gen 2:24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh What is the reason that God is suggesting for marriage between a godly man and woman? Does God marry everybody? And if he does not marry everyone then some folks should not be married. So is divorce okay in this situation? |
