301 | rapture or tribulation? | Bible general Archive 3 | kalos | 175403
Prewrath vs. Pretrib Pretribulationalism 'Pretribulationists teach that the return of Christ has been imminent since the days of the early church and that the church will be raptured sometime before the seventieth week begins. Although they have no Scripture that in so many words teaches it, they teach that there are no signs and the rapture could take place at any moment. The seventieth week of Daniel is therefore considered to be a seven-year period of God's judgmental "tribulation" (hence the term pretribulation). This position generally views the seventieth week as the day of the Lord's wrath from which the church is excluded.' Prewrath 'The Prewrath position teaches that the true church will be raptured when the great tribulation by Antichrist, inspired by Satan, is cut short by God's day-of-the-Lord wrath, which will occur between the sixth and seventh seals of Revelation, sometime during the second half of the seventieth week. The persecution associated with the great tribulation of Antichrist is viewed as the wrath of Satan, whereas the events that follow, beginning with the seventh seal, are considered the wrath of God.' (For much more information go to the source of the above quote: www.solagroup.org. ) While I neither desire nor intend to debate the Prewrath Rapture position, I will nevertheless be happy to provide further information upon request. After all, the pre-tribbers have been having their say since the "secret" or "any moment rapture" view was picked up by Plymouth Brethren pastor John Nelson Darby, who first preached on it in 1843. It came to America in the late 1800's. Grace to you, Kalos |

303 | Alternative to the term "Jesus is LORD"? | Rom 10:9 | kalos | 175322
That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 NIV The BIBLE says: "Jesus is Lord." While I appreciate your desire to present the gospel clearly, I'm not a fan of changing the wording of the Word to make it more relevant. Even the modern paraphrases I consulted didn't change the word "Lord" in Romans 10:9. I think that many young people in America do not know what the words honor, respect, duty, or integrity mean. Many are not familiar with the term or the concept of "keeping your word". We ought not tamper with the word of God. Why not just say what the Bible says -- "Jesus is Lord" -- and then explain what that means? As an old preacher used to say, "The Word of God doesn't need to be brought up to date. It is up to date. God's Word is more up to date than the headlines of tomorrow's newspaper." Having said all that, I would be pleased to see someone give an explanation of "Jesus is Lord" that even today's high school and college graduates could comprehend. Grace to you, Kalos |

If one approaches the Bible with the preconceived idea that the rapture will occur before the 7-year tribulation, then one will likely conclude that the rapture will occur before the 7-year tribulation. That is, if one's study of the rapture passages is preceded by the premise that the rapture occurs before the tribulation, then it will be easy to interpret the Scriptures to support that notion. 306 | kill all the boys and take the virgins? | Num 31:17 | kalos | 175116
Only the virgins left alive among the Midianites Numbers 31:17-18 (Source: www.carm.org/diff/Num_31_17.htm) ____________________ "Perhaps it was a horrible thing for [the virgins]. But, their lives were spared." --John F. Walvoord ____________________ '(Numbers 31:17-18) - "Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately. 18"But all the girls who have not known man intimately, spare for yourselves." 'The Midianites were descended from Abraham and Keturah (Gen. 25:1). They inhabited the land of Moab and were apparently involved in seducing Israel into going after false gods. Because the Israelites fell into idolatry this way, God told Moses to order the deaths of all had bowed to the false gods in that land. '"While Israel remained at Shittim, the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab. For they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. So Israel joined themselves to Baal of Peor, and the Lord was angry against Israel. And the Lord said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the Lord, so that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel." So Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you slay his men who have joined themselves to Baal of Peor," (Num. 25:1-5). 'God later instructs the Israelites to deal harshly with the Midianites: "Be hostile to the Midianites and strike them; for they have been hostile to you with their tricks, with which they have deceived you in the affair of Peor, and in the affair of Cozbi, the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister who was slain on the day of the plague because of Peor," (Num. 25:17-18). Later, when Moses meets the returning Israeli army he was angry because he saw the Medianite survivors. "The Midianite women, he said, should have died because they were directly culpable in Israel’s sin at Baal of Peor. All the women except the virgins were then sentenced to death along with all the boys. This insured the extermination of the Midianites and thus prevented them from ever again seducing Israel to sin....The virgins were spared because they obviously had had no role in the Baal of Peor incident nor could they by themselves perpetuate the Midianite peoples."1 'Some may object that the Israelites then married the virgins, the daughters of those whom they had killed and that this would be a horrible thing for the virgins. Perhaps it was a horrible thing for them. But, their lives were spared. Also, in that culture at that time, warfare and plunder was a necessary evil. The reality of taking women as wives was unfortunate but true. 'Why was God so harsh with those in idolatry? 'We must understand that God dealt very harshly because it was through the people of Israel that the Messiah would later come. Satan, in his perpetual effort to oppose God, sought to have the people of God fall into false worship and through intermarriage with other people, to destroy the messianic line and make not only the promises of God null and void, but destroy means by which the Messiah could be born. If this could be accomplished, then none would have any hope of deliverance from sin. Therefore, we see in the Old Testament God being very harsh and strict according to the Law.' __________________ 1. John F. 307 | Origin of race | Gen 10:1 | kalos | 174282
The Origin of the Different Races ____________________ "The Bible does not explicitly give us the origin of the different 'races' or skin colors of humanity." ____________________ According to "The New Compact Bible Dictionary," Ham "became the progenitor of the dark races; not the Negroes, but the Egyptians, Ethiopians, Libyans and Canaanites (Gen. 10:6-20)." "The descendants of the original Ham (Pss. 78:51; 105:23; 106:22). In these passages 'Ham' is used as another name for Egypt as representing Ham's principal descendants" (The New Compact Bible Dictionary, Edited by T. Alton Bryant, 1967, Zondervan). WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THE DIFFERENT RACES? 'The Bible does not explicitly give us the origin of the different "races" or skin colors of humanity. In actuality, there is only one race - the human race. Within the human race is a great amount of diversity in skin color and other physical characteristics. Some speculate that when God confused the languages at the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9), He also instituted racial diversity. It is possible that God made genetic changes to humanity to better enable people to survive in different ecologies, such as Africans being better "equipped" genetically to survive the excessive heat in Africa. According to this view, God confused the languages, causing humanity to segregate linguistically, and then created genetic racial differences based on where each racial group would eventually settle, geographically. While possible, there is no explicit Biblical basis for this view. The races / skin color of humanity are nowhere mentioned in connection with the Tower of Babel. 'The best explanation is that Adam and Eve possessed the genes to produce black, brown, and white offspring (and everything else in between). This would be similar to how a mixed-race couple often has children that vary greatly in color from one another. Since God obviously desired humanity to be diverse in appearance, it makes sense that God would have given Adam and Eve the ability to produce children of different skin tones. Later, the only survivors of the Flood were Noah and his wife, Noah’s three sons and their wives, eight people in all (Genesis 7:13). Perhaps Shem’s, Ham’s, or Japheth’s wives were of different races. It is possible that Noah’s wife was of a different race than Noah. Maybe all 8 of them were of mixed race, which would mean that they possessed the genetics to produce children of different races. Whatever the explanation, the most important aspect of this question is that we are all the same race, all created by the same God, all created for the same purpose.' ____________________ Source: www.gotquestions.org/different-races.html |

'tn The meaning of the term translated “hornets” (tsir’ah) is debated. Various suggestions are “discouragement” (HALOT 1056-57 s.v.; cf. NEB, TEV, CEV “panic”; NCV “terror”) and “leprosy” (J. H. Tigay, Deuteronomy [JPSTC], 360, n. 33; cf. NRSV “the pestilence”), as well as “hornet” (BDB 864 s.v.; cf. NAB, NASB, NIV, NLT). The latter seems most suitable to the verb...shalakh (“send”; cf. 310 | Triune God | John 14:28 | kalos | 174180
We don't make Jesus equal to God. We don't MAKE Him anything. He IS God (John 1:1; Romans 9:5 NIV). If Jesus is God, then why did He say the Father was greater than He? "You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced, because I go to the Father; for the Father is greater than I'" (John 14:28). 'Jesus said the Father was greater than He not because Jesus is not God, but because Jesus was also a man and as a man he was in a lower position. He was ". . . made for a little while lower than the angels . . ." (Heb. 2:9). Also in Phil. 2:5-8, it says that Jesus "emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men . . ." 'Jesus has two natures. Jesus was not denying that He was God. He was merely acknowledging the fact that He was also a man. Jesus is both God and man. As a man, he was in a lesser position than the Father. He had added to Himself human nature (Col. 2:9). He became a man to die for people. 'A comparison can be found in the marriage relationship. Biblically, a husband is greater in position and authority than his wife. But, he is no different in nature and he is not better than she. They share the same nature, being human, and they work together by love. 'So, Jesus was not denying that He was God. He was simply acknowledging that He was also a man and as a man, he was subject to the laws of God so that He might redeem those who were under the law; namely, sinners (Gal. 4:4-5). 'For further reading please see the two natures of Jesus. (../doctrine/2natures.htm) 'SCRIPTURES QUOTED: 'Phil. 2:5-8, "Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." 'Col. 2:9, "For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form," 'Gal. 4:4-5, "But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, in order that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons." 'Heb. 2:9, "But we do see Him who has been made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone."' ____________________ Source: www.carm.org/witnesses.htm |

311 | What if you never heard of God before? | Rom 1:20 | kalos | 174168
Those who have never heard about Jesus ____________________ NASB Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. ____________________ 'Question: "What happens to people who never have a chance to hear about Jesus? Will God condemn a person who has never heard about Him?" 'Answer: All people are accountable to God whether they have “heard about Him” or not. The Bible tells us that God has clearly revealed Himself in nature (Romans 1:20) and in the hearts of people (Ecclesiastes 3:11). The problem is that the human race is sinful; we all reject this knowledge of God and rebel against Him (Romans 1:21-23). Apart from God's grace, God would give us over to the sinful desires of our hearts, allowing us to discover how useless and miserable life is apart from Him. This He does for those who reject Him (Romans 1:24-32). 'In reality, it is not that some people have not heard about God. Rather, the problem is that they have rejected what they have heard and what is readily seen in nature. Deuteronomy 4:29 proclaims, “But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.” This verse teaches an important principle: everyone who truly seeks after God will find Him. If a person truly desires to know God, God will make Himself known. 'The problem is, “there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God” (Romans 3:11). People reject the knowledge of God that is present in nature and in their own heart, and instead decide to worship a “god” of their own creation. It is foolish to debate the fairness of God sending someone to hell who never had the opportunity to hear the Gospel of Christ. People are responsible to God for what God has already revealed to them. The Bible says that people reject this knowledge, and therefore God is just in condemning them to hell. 'Instead of debating the fate of those who have never heard, we, as Christians, should be doing our best to make sure that they hear. We are called to spread the Gospel throughout the nations (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8). The fact that we know people reject the knowledge of God revealed in nature must motivate us to proclaim the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. Only through accepting the Gospel of God’s grace through the Lord Jesus Christ can people be saved from their sins and rescued from an eternity apart from God in hell.' 312 | Christianity, Religions and Confusion | John 14:6 | kalos | 174165
What Is The Right Religion? 'Question: "What is the right religion for me?" 'Answer: Fast food restaurants entice us by allowing us to order our food exactly how we want it. Some coffee shops boast over a hundred different flavors and variations of coffee. Even when buying houses and cars, we can look for one with all the options and features we desire. We no longer live in just a chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry world. Choice is king! You can find about anything you want according to your own personal likes and needs. 'So how about a religion that is just right for you? How about a religion that is guilt-free, makes no demands, and is not encumbered with a lot of bothersome do's and don'ts? It is out there, just as I have described, but is religion something to be chosen like a favorite flavor of ice cream? 'There are a lot of voices vying for our attention, so why should anyone consider Jesus above, say, Muhammad or Confucius, Buddha, or Charles Taze Russell, or Joseph Smith? After all, don't all roads lead to Heaven? Aren't all religions basically the same? The truth is all religions do not lead to Heaven just as all roads do not lead to Indiana. 'Jesus alone speaks with the authority of God because Jesus alone conquered death. Muhammad, Confucius, and the others molder in their graves to this very day, but Jesus, by His own power, walked away from the tomb three days after dying on a cruel Roman cross. Anyone with power over death deserves our attention. Anyone with power over death deserves to be heard...' To read more go to: www.gotquestions.org/right-religion.html |

314 | Christianity, Religions and Confusion | John 14:6 | kalos | 174163
Other People's Religious Beliefs 'In our age of “tolerance,” moral relativism is touted as the supreme virtue. Every philosophy, idea, and faith system has equal merit, says the relativist, and is worthy of equal respect. Those who favor one faith system over another or—even worse—claim a knowledge of absolute truth are considered narrow-minded, unenlightened, or even bigoted. 'Of course, different religions make mutually exclusive claims, and the relativist is unable to logically reconcile outright contradictions. For example, the Bible makes the claim that “it is appointed unto men once to die” (Hebrews 9:27), while some Eastern religions teach reincarnation. So, do we die once, or many times? Both teachings cannot be true. The relativist essentially redefines truth in order to create a paradoxical world where multiple, contradictory “truths” can co-exist. 'Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by Me” (John 14:6). A Christian has accepted Truth, not just as a concept, but as a Person. This acknowledgment of Truth separates the Christian from the so-called “open-mindedness” of the day. 'The Christian has publicly acknowledged that Jesus rose from the dead (Romans 10:9-10). If he truly believes in the Resurrection, how can he be “open minded” concerning an unbeliever’s assertion that Jesus never rose again? For a Christian to deny the clear teaching of God’s Word would indeed be a betrayal of God. 'Note that we have cited the fundamentals of the faith in our examples so far. Some things (such as the bodily resurrection of Christ) are non-negotiable. Other things may be open to debate, such as who wrote the book of Hebrews, the nature of Paul’s “thorn in the flesh,” and the number of angels that can stand on the head of a pin. We avoid becoming embroiled in disputations over secondary matters (2 Timothy 2:23; Titus 3:9).' 315 | Jesus | 1 Cor 7:1 | kalos | 174161
"If Jesus had been married, the Bible would have told us so..." One could ask "From a biblical point of view, how do we know if Jesus WAS married?" Whoever alleges that Jesus WAS married, the burden of proof is on him. In other words, if Jesus was married, show me the evidence. Where in Scripture does it say that he was? I'm not implying that you yourself are saying such a thing, but there are people who are. Let them prove their assertion. Here is a reply that should answer your question. 'Question: "Was Jesus Christ married?" 'Answer: Was Jesus married? No, Jesus Christ was not married. A recent popular book, "The Da Vinci Code," speaks of Christ being married to Mary Magdalene. This myth / lie is absolutely false and has no basis theologically, historically, or Biblically. Even in all of the supposed "lost gospels," none of them specifically states that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene. The closest any of them come is saying that Jesus kissed Mary Magdalene. If Jesus had been married, the Bible would have told us so - or there would be some unambiguous statement to that fact. Those who believe / teach these myths about Jesus are doing so in an attempt to "humanize" Him, to make Him more ordinary - like everyone else. People simply do not want to believe that Jesus was God in the flesh (John 1:1,14; 10:30). So, they believe myths about Jesus being married, having children, and being an ordinary human being. 'A secondary question would be, "Could Jesus Christ have been married?" There is nothing sinful about being married. There is nothing sinful about having sexual relations in marriage. So, yes, Jesus could have been married and still be the sinless Lamb of God, the Savior of the world. At the same time, there is no reason Biblically that Christ would have married. That is not the point in this debate. Those who believe that Jesus was married do not believe that He was sinless, or that He was the Messiah. Getting married and having children is not why God sent Jesus. Mark 10:45 tells us why Jesus came, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."' What does it mean that man is made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27)? ____________________ 'The image of God refers to the immaterial part of man...It is a likeness mentally, morally, and socially.' ____________________ (Source: www.gotquestions.org/image-of-God.html) 'Answer: On the last day of creation, God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Genesis 1:26). Thus, He finished His work with a “personal touch.” God formed man from the dust and gave him life by sharing His own breath (Genesis 2:7). Accordingly, man is unique among all God’s creations, having both a material (body) and an immaterial (soul / spirit) part. 'Having the “image” or “likeness” of God means, in the simplest terms, that we were made to resemble God. Adam did not resemble God in the sense of God’s having flesh and blood. Scripture says that “God is a spirit” (John 4:24) and therefore exists without a body. However, Adam’s body did mirror the life of God, insofar as it was created in perfect health and was not subject to death. 'The image of God refers to the immaterial part of man. It sets man apart from the animal world, fits him for the “dominion” God intended (Genesis 1:28), and enables him to commune with his Maker. It is a likeness mentally, morally, and socially. 'Mentally, man was created as a rational, volitional agent—in other words, man can reason and man can choose. This is a reflection of God’s intellect and freedom. Any time someone invents a machine, writes a book, paints a landscape, enjoys a symphony, calculates a sum, or names a pet, he or she is proclaiming the fact that we are made in God’s image. 'Morally, man was created in righteousness and perfect innocence, a reflection of God’s holiness. God saw all that He had made (mankind included) and called it “very good” (Genesis 1:31). Our conscience or “moral compass” is a vestige of that original state. Whenever someone writes a law, recoils from evil, praises good behavior, or feels guilty, he is confirming the fact that we are made in God’s own image. 'Socially, man was created for fellowship. This reflects God's triune nature and His love. In Eden, man’s primary relationship was with God (Genesis 3:8 implies fellowship with God), and God made the first woman because “it is not good that the man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18). Every time someone marries a wife, makes a friend, hugs a child, or attends a church, he is demonstrating the fact that we are made in the likeness of God. 'Part of being made in God’s image means that Adam had the capacity to make free choices. Although he was given a righteous nature, Adam made an evil choice to rebel against his Maker. In so doing, Adam marred the image of God within himself, and he passed that damaged likeness on to all his children, including us (Romans 5:12). Today, we still bear the image of God (James 3:9), but we also bear the scars of sin. Mentally, morally, socially, and physically, we show the effects. 'The good news is that, when God redeems an individual, He begins to restore the original image of God, creating “the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness” (Ephesians 4:24; see also Colossians 3:10).' ____________________ Source: www.gotquestions.org/image-of-God.html |

"Isaac married Rebekkah, his first cousin once removed. Genesis 24:12-51 "Jacob married two of his cousins, Rachel and Leah. I love this story! Genesis chapters 28-29 "Zelophehad's five orphaned daughters were commanded by God to marry cousins. Numbers 36 "Eleazar's daughters each married first cousins, as they were instructed. I Chronicles 23:22 "In the 18th chapter of Leviticus, the Bible provides a lengthy list of forbidden relationships. These laws are the scriptural definition of sexual impurity. Not one mention of cousins, of any degree, is made. "Some would argue that these are all Old Testament references. That is correct. The reason for this is that the New Testament does not specifically address the rules of sexual misconduct, with the exception of fornication, other than to refer you back to the Old Testament laws. "Biblical prohibitions of cousin marriage reside only in the minds of the unlearned." (www.cousincouples.com/info/religion.shtml) There is no need for a time breakdown.
