263 | I CAME TO FULFILL THE LAW | Matt 5:17 | Brian.g | 23239
There What you call Christ's Law, is in fact, God's Law. As it states in Matthew 5:17, Jesus did not come to abolish or to rewrite God's Law. John gives the best single explanation as to the true meaning of this subject. John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. In Matthew 5:18-19, Jesus Himself reaffirms that He is not changing Gods Law. Matt 5:18 "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. People reading Gods Law in the Old Testament have a feeling that God's Law is one of cruelty and harshness - they tend not to see God's compassion and love for man in His laws and in the application of His laws. Often, Gods words are taken out of context. An example of this is Deuteronomy 19:21 "Thus you shall not show pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. But, if you read Deuteronomy 19:17-20, you will understand God is talking about justice among men living on earth. The same justice God commands in Deuteronomy 16:18-20 Deut 16:18 "You shall appoint for yourself judges and officers in all your towns which the LORD your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment. 19 "You shall not distort justice; you shall not be partial, and you shall not take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and perverts the words of the righteous. 20 "Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue, that you may live and possess the land which the LORD your God is giving you These words of justice in Deuteronomy is a single small example of God being a compassionate and just God - this is the truth and mercy which is what Jesus is trying to teach us. From this, we also begin to understand how to gain entry in heaven, by acting as a 'Christian'. I quote this because, Jesus is teaching the same (Christian behavior), which God had already taught us in the Old Testament. Brian |

264 | Is there middle ground? | Romans | Brian.g | 22196
Ed In the early days of Christianity, similiar questions were being asked. One of the first times was when Gentiles were being converted to Chrisitanity and they were not required to follow Jewish laws or customs. The Church of Jerusalem, which, at the time, was the head of the Christian Church, strongly questioned whether Gentiles could become Christians, and if so, wouldn't they have to follow Jewish Laws. The Bishops of the Church met at a Council and debated the issue and came to the conclusion that Christianity was for all people and in fact, may be practiced differently - as long as the core belief was the same. The Bishops then searched for the one unifying - defining statement - which would define whether a person was a true Christian or not. The Apostles Creed was selected as the 'Rule of Faith'. Tradition states that the Apostles Creed was first written, by the Apostles, on the original Pentecost. In this way, as the Apostles traveled and converted - all twelve Apostles had on single unifying standard. I think this is the common ground you are seeking. Brian |

266 | HOW COULD JESUS BE A DESCENDANT OF DAVID | Bible general Archive 1 | Brian.g | 20958
The genealogy of Christ according to the First Evangelist descends from Abraham through three series of fourteen members each; the first fourteen belong to the patriarchal order, the second to the royal and the third to that of private citizens. Matthew 1:17, shows that this arrangement was intended; for the writer expressly states: "So all the generations, from Abraham to David, are fourteen generations. And from David to the transmigration of Babylon, are fourteen generations: and from the transmigration of Babylon to Christ are fourteen generations." First Series 1. Abraham 2. Isaac 3. Jacob 4. Judas 5. Phares 6. Esron 7. Aram 8. Aminadab 9. Naasson 10. Salmon 11. Booz 12. Obed 13. Jesse 14. David Second Series 1. Solomon 2. Roboam 3. Abia 4. Asa 5. Josaphat 6. Joram 7. Ozias 8. Joatham 9. Achaz 10. Ezechias 11. Manasses 12. Amon 13. Josias 14. Jechonias Third Series 1. Jechonias 2. Salathiel 3. Zorobabel 4. Abiud 5. Eliacim 6. Azor 7. Sadoe 8. Achim 9. Eliud 10. Eleazar 11. Mathan 12. Jacob 13. Joseph 14. Jesus By virtue of Joseph's marriage with Mary, Jesus could be called the son of Joseph, he can for the same reason be called "son of David" (St. Augustine, On the Harmony of the Gospels, II, i, 2). 267 | How do we know the Bible is the truth? | Bible general Archive 1 | Brian.g | 18178
1. God is truth 2. Jesus is the Christ - the ideal truth that came as a divine manifestation of God 3. We have the testimony of Jesus. 4. History alone allows us to establish the fact that Jews and Christians have always believed in the inspiration of the Bible 5. Those who first recognized in the Bible a superhuman work, had as foundation of their opinion, the testimony of the Prophets, of Christ, and of the Apostles, whose Divine mission was sufficiently established by immediate experience or by history. 6. To this purely rational argument can be added the authentic teaching of the Church 7. Every Christian sect, still deserving that name, believes in the inspiration of the Scriptures, although some have more or less altered the idea of inspiration. 8. Thus, the Bible is truth Brian |

Benjibabs It was an interesting conclusion to your question, by seeing your question posted twice and the resulting confusion, as to what was said by whom, when, and etc. I curious, was this to reinforce a point or strictly by accident. Brian |

All Other 'Contradictions' Upon closer inspection, all will realize that there is no contradiction - only loose interpretations of the Bible - God's word - based upon a single passage or phrase, instead of learning the whole word of God. When people take the time to learn the whole word of God, then the full meaning, truth and greatness of God's word, and of God Himself, will become evident to each person. Brian |

12 thrones of Isreal - 12 Including one devil. It was during Jesus' 4th journey at which time, Jesus told the Apostles that they would sit on the twelve thrones of Isreal, (Autumn,A.U.C. 780 to Passover, 781) It was during Jesus' 5th journey in which He identified one fo the Apostles as the devil. (Spring A.U.C. 781). Again, these are not conflicting statements, but statements which were made at different times. And, it should be noted that after the death of Judas, the remaining eleven Apostles elected a new 12th Apostle - keeping the total at 12 - which gave truth and merit to both statements made by Jesus. The true questions which needs to be addressed here is: What was Judas' real role and why did Jesus pick him. Did Jesus not know what He was doing? Did Jesus knowingly pick Judas to fulfill Scripture? Did Jesus pick Judas to show the fraility of man, even when the men are committed to Christ? Brian |

Drinks offered to Jesus Both situations appear to have occured at the same point, the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. Here, Jesus was offered two drinks, one which He refused, completely and the second He tasted, but was unwilling to drink. (Wine mingled with myrrh) - Jesus DID NOT drink Mark 15:23 They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it (Vinegar Mingled with Gall) Actual passage is Mathew 27:34 , not 7:34 Matt 27:34 they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink. This is not a contradiction, but two different occurrences Brian |

Visitors at Jesus' grave - Mary, Mary, Joanne and Salome The holy women carrying the spices previously prepared, start out for the sepulchre before dawn, and reach it after sunrise; they are anxious about the heavy stone, but know nothing of the official guard of the sepulchre (Matt., xxviii, 1-3; Mark, xvi, 1-3; Luke, xxiv, 1; John, xx, 1). The angel frightened the guards by his brightness, put them to flight, rolled away the stone, and seated himself (not upon, ep autou), but above (epano autou) the stone (Matt. xxviii, 2-4). (Mary Magdelen, Mary mother of James, and Salome) Mary Magdalen, Mary the Mother of James, and Salome approach the sepulchre, and see the stone rolled back, whereupon Mary Magdalen immediately returns to inform the Apostles (Mark, xvi, 4; Luke, xxiv, 2; John xx, 1-2). (Mary, Mother of James and Salome) The OTHER TWO holy women enter the sepulchre, find an angel seated in the vestibule, who shows them the empty sepulchre, announces the Resurrection, and commissions them to tell the disciples and Peter that they shall see Jesus in Galilee (Matt., xxviii, 5-7; Mark, xvi, 5-7). (Joanna, et al) A second group of holy women, consisting of Joanna and her companions, arrive at the sepulchre, where they have probably agreed to meet the first group, enter the empty interior, and are admonished by two angels that Jesus has risen according to His prediction (Luke, xxiv, 10). Not long after, Peter and John, who were notified by Mary Magdalen, arrive at the sepulchre and find the linen cloth in such a position as to exclude the supposition that the body was stolen; for they lay simply flat on the ground, showing that the sacred body had vanished out of them without touching them. When John notices this he believes (John, xx, 3-10). (Mary Magdalen alone) Mary Magdalen returns to the sepulchre, sees first two angels within, and then Jesus Himself (John, xx, 11-l6; Mark, xvi, 9). Brian |

Joseph's Father According to Julius Africanus: Estha married Mathan, a descendant of David through Solomon, and became the mother of Jacob; After Mathan's death she took for her second husband Mathat, a descendent of David through Nathan, and by him became the mother of Heli. Jacob and Heli were, therefore, uterine brothers. Heli married, but died without offspring; His widow, therefore, became the levirate wife of Jacob, and gave birth to Joseph, who was the carnal son of Jacob, but the legal son of Heli, thus combining in his person two lineages of David's descendents. 280 | Can brain damage lead to damnation? | 1 John 1:9 | Brian.g | 17453
John There are a couple things that need to be remembered in answering this question. 1. Ours is a God of mercy 2. Sin is an intentional act against God made by the free will of man. God is a compassionate Being who is wise enough to understand that actions, which are a direct result of injury or sickness and not controllable by man, are neither an act of free will nor is it an intentional insult against God. It is our hope, that some portion of that man is capable of understanding and loving God. God will use mercy and understanding in judging this person. Brian |
