261 | Heaven or hell predetermined? | Eph 1:11 | BradK | 223112
Hello lightedsteps, Ephesians does speak of us (believers) being chosen 'according to the good pleasure of His will' (NKJV). Did you overlook Eph. 1:4-5? Eph 1:4 "just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love Eph 1:5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will," (NASB) Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Hello KingT, If I may comment. What we're dealing with here is how God speaks to us today as believers. Heb. 1:1-2 tells us, "God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world." (NASB) God is sovereign, He can and has spoken through a donkey, etc. The point is, we have the completed canon of Scripture whereby He has left us His Word. The Bible is the Word of God. It is God's Word- Him speaking to us! To say otherwise or look for various mystical methods is to negate the authority and sufficiency of His Holy Word! The question is: How does God speak to us today? By the way, I don't believe I gave an analogy of the Court Room? Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

265 | Can a congragent hear form God ? | Jer 33:3 | BradK | 222992
Hello Jesus' Chickling, Welcome to the Forum. What about the Word? Does not God speak to us through his Word? It is, afterall, the Word of God, is it not? Heb 4:12 "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (NASB) Don't all believers have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them? Eph 1:13 tells us (speaking to the believer) "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise," (NASB) Remember, "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ" (Rom. 10:13) Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Hello lightedsteps, Allow me to offer comment here. As Doc had mentioned, the area of which you seem to question is that of Textual Criticism. This is the science of reconstructing the original text(s) of Scripture based upon available manuscript evidence. It is a highly specialized field and not one where opinions are offered like a grain of salt. I understand where you're coming from and you're most certainly entitled to your opinion. However, are we to believe you have a better handle on textual matters- or are more qualified - than a godly learned man who has studied these? While's it's OK to question things- and we need to think critically- I wouldn't throw the proverbial "baby-out-with-the-bathwater" on this. You (almost) alone appear to support Mark 16:9-20 as canonical without question. Upon what evidence would you support your statement, "this inerrancy extends as far as the canon itself"? Do you have understanding about the Transmission of Scripture and how the NT was Canonized? There were many complexities involved. Doubts about Mark 16:9-20 are more in the realm of Textual Criticism and have little connection with Inerrancy! (See Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy- Article X) Your question "do these teachings edify the reader, or do they make the reader, question the Bible text as true or not?" has no bearing upon Canonicity or Textual Criticism. No disrespect intended, but it seems you're arguing from ignorance?:-) I would not call men like the late Bruce Metzger or F.F Bruce "false apostles" They are men, certainly fallible, and fallen like the rest of us. Yet as C.H. Spurgeon wisely commented, "It seems odd, that certain men who talk so much of what the Holy Spirit reveals to themselves, should think so little of what he has revealed to others." F.F. Bruce was Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester, England for some 20 years. Having just re-read his "The Canon of Scripture", let me share his thoughts on Mark 16: "What of the last twelve verses of Mark's Gospel (16:9-20)? These verses- the longer Marcan appendix- were not part of Mark's work. That in itself would not render them uncanonical- as we have seen, canonicity and authorship are two distinct issues- but their contents reveal their secondary nature. They seem to present, in the main, a summary of resurrection appearances recorded in the other Gospels." He goes on to conclude, "The right of these twelve verses to receive canonical recognition is doubtful". Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Hello lightedsteps, I wouldn't take steve's reply as trivializing Mark 16. Keep in mind there is doubt as to the authenticity of Mark 16:9-20! This passage has been called a later addition to the Gospel of Mark by most New Testament scholars in the past century. One of the major reasons for doubting the authenticity of the ending is that it does not appear in some of the oldest existing manuscripts, and it is reported to be absent from many others in ancient times by early writers of the Church. I'd caution basing one's doctrine from such a passage :-) Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

269 | when did theologians understand 7's? | 2 Tim 2:15 | BradK | 222723
Hello vncnt blzn, Thanks for your reply. Since your friend is "a teacher at the Theosophical Society of America", that explains a lot! Theosophists are basically Mystics- whose object is knowledge, and with whom the organ of communication with God, is the reason. As Hodge notes, "The Theosophist is one who gives a theory of God, or of the works of God, which has not reason, but an inspiration of his own for its basis.” “The Theosophists, neither contented with the natural light of reason, nor with the simple doctrines of Scripture understood in their literal sense, have recourse to an internal supernatural light superior to all other illuminations, from which they profess to derive a mysterious and divine philosophy." So, you are getting information from someone who denies the sufficiency and auhtority of the Bible as the Word of God! Regarding the number seven, it can often denote perfection- or completeness! It is used frequently in Scripture, such as Gen. 2:2, "By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done." (NASB) I'm not sure how this contradicts Blavatsky's understanding nor where she thinks theologians lacked in their understanding of the number 7? Might I ask why this is so important to understand? 273 | why do the good hurt more than the bad? | Rom 3:10 | BradK | 222239
Hello rizz, I'm sorry that you're more confused. Unfortunately there is no simple, easy answer to this question! I can assure you that God does not hate us, as John 3:16 tells, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." (NASB) Further, 1 John 4:9-10 says, " By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins." Can I ask?: Are you a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and have you read and/or studied any of the Bible? For a specific answer to your original question I would recommend this link: http://www.gotquestions.org/bad-things-good-people.html A focused study on God and His attributes would really benefit you. However, this depends on your ability and desire to read, pray and meditate upon God and His Word. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

274 | God speak to us?,if so,then why faith | Heb 11:1 | BradK | 222026
Hello nextman, I think your observation is somewhat confused? Again, Rom. 10:17 says, "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ". Heb. 11:1, reads, "...faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Scripture does not say "experience is the foundation of our faith"! As an example, in Rom. 4:3, we are told, "For what does the Scripture say? "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS." (NASB) It says, "Abraham believed God". He didn't believe "in God" or "experience God, he simply believed what he had been told by God! Similarly, our faith is founded upon what God has promised us in His Word! His promises are true as God is Omnipotent,Faithful, Holy, Righteous, cannot lie, so our foundation is firm. Experience is no foundation for faith due to it's highly subjective nature! 275 | Why apostle Paul identifies rock | 1 Cor 10:4 | BradK | 221985
Hello alexey, If I may, sometimes in looking for deeper meaning, we can be looking for something that isn't there! Notice the Amplified Translation and it's references: 1 Corinthians 10:4 - "And they all drank the same spiritual (supernaturally given) drink. For they drank from a spiritual Rock which followed them [produced by the sole power of God Himself without natural instrumentality], and the Rock was Christ. [Exod. 17:6; Num. 20:11.]" This verse reminds us of Num. 20:8, when the Isrealites had no water, and God told Moses what is then quoted in 20:11. I think it reasonable to assume that this rock, a source of water, foreshadowed Christ as the spiritual rock who followed the Israelites. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

276 | Why apostle Paul identifies rock | 1 Cor 10:4 | BradK | 221981
Hello alexey, Are you truly seeking answers or just being argumentative? The answer is contained in the verse Azure provided, 1 Cor. 10;4, "and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ." The reference is to Christ Himself! BradK |

277 | ... | John 5:47 | BradK | 221979
Hello alexey, The point of John 5:47 can be found back in vs. 39, "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;" (NASB). The scriptures point to and testify of the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ! Additionally, in vs. 46, "For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me" (NASB) I hope this helps, BradK |

280 | Jesus traveled to hell | Matthew | BradK | 221844
Hello watchman, As a note, Matt 12:40 says, "for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." (NASB) Just for clarification: The Greek for earth- as used here- is, ge, meaning land, earth, or ground. So, the verse is not saying or implying that Jesus actually went to hell. He was in the ground (the tomb) for 3 days, most certainly, but not hell! Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
