2441 | Will unbelievers be raised from Sheol? | Rev 21:8 | Reformer Joe | 31754
"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for GOD MADE IT EVIDENT TO THEM. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been CLEARLY SEEN, being understood through what has been made, so that THEY ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE." --Romans 1:18-20 --Joe! |

"What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; as it is written, "THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE." "THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING," "THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS"; "WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS"; "THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN." "THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES." --Romans 3:9-18 --Joe! |

EVERYONE has been informed. God has made himself known to all men. No one has an "out." Scripture makes this crystal clear. "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for GOD MADE IT EVIDENT TO THEM. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been CLEARLY SEEN, being understood through what has been made, so that THEY ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE." --Romans 1:18-20 God has made himself known. The reason people claim ignorance is that they suppress the truth , denying what is right in front of their faces. --Joe! |

It makes no sense in the context of Romans 1 to say that the truth of God in creation has been revealed only to unbelievers who have heard the gospel. The whole point Paul is making is that God has revealed Himself to all human beings in nature, and that His own nature and attributes can be clearly seen. According to the text, it is through creation that this is revealed to humanity. It simply makes no sense to say that God makes himself clearly known through creation only to those who have heard the gospel. To take this view undermines Paul's whole argument in Romans 1-3 that ALL are shut up under sin, without excuse, due to (a) the light of creation; (b) our God-given consciences which correspond to His will; and (c) the written law as given to the nation of Israel. Everyone has access to (a) and (b), but due to their inherent unrighteousness, they suppress the truth. In other words, no one is truly unaware of God, no matter what they claim; they live a lie, and they willingly reject the clearly revealed truth. --Joe! |

Romans 1 does not just talk about nature attesting to God's glory; it is an indictment of humanity because of their response to that revelation. It goes much farther than saying merely that God is obvious from nature. God is obvious, and man in his unrighteousness suppresses that truth. You are right that the revelation of nature does not teach us our need for salvation. Nature reveals God and His attributes. Man responds by not giving Him the glory, which leads to a downward spiral of sin, idolatry, and approval of others who commit the same acts (Romans 1:18-32). In addition, God gives us our conscience, which is an inward revelation of God's will. You are correct in stating that neither the conscience nor God's revelation in nature is the gospel. Revelation in creation and conscience cannot SAVE us (which agrees with Romans 10:14), but it does INDICT us and CONDEMN us, shutting us all up under sin. The gospel (i.e. the message of salvation) is not part of natural or "general" revelation (i.e. revealed to all humanity), but rather special revelation (i.e. revealed by the Holy Spirit primarily in the proclamation of His written Word). That preaching of the gospel is what Romans 10:14 is referring to. Those people who have not heard the gospel cannot be saved, because the gospel has not been preached to them. They are still condemned, however, because God has revealed Himself and his requirements of perfect obedience to all human beings, both outwardly and inwardly. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), whether they have heard the gospel or not. People do not go to hell for rejecting Christ; they go to hell for sinning against God the Father. And everyone falls into that category, and everyone knows deep, deep down at some level that they fall into that category. They are just denying the truth. I don't see how you could hold that I am on shaky ground with Romans 1. The chapter is very clear to those who will accept what it says. I would encourage you to go back and read Romans 1-3, without presupposing that there are people truly ignorant of God. If you can take the chapter in its entirety and show me how it doesn't apply to all humanity and its response to a clearly self-revealed God, I would love to hear your interpretation. --Joe! |

Hank: Proclaiming what nature and our consciences proclaim is definitely part of our work as ambassadors. Just as the Bible reveals in words what God has revealed in creation and our consciences (reinforcing it via special revelation), so are we to announce to our fellow humans what the Bible reveals. The way I see it is this: 1. General revelation given to all human beings reveals the glory of God in creation and His perfect moral law to all human beings via our consciences. Our unrighteous suppression of the truth underlying creation and failure to heed our consciences results in our just condemnation. Again, this applies to all men. 2. Special revelation was given to the nation of Israel and subsequently to all the world. This special revelation reiterates what the general revelation tells us about our condemnation. Note that this is not NEW information, but rather a reminder/reinforcement of what we already know. In addition to the message of our just condemnation, the special revelation (which is contained in the Bible) also provides the message of God's salvation which He provides through faith in the person and work of Christ Jesus. Therefore, God's judgment of humanity is an element of both general and special revelation, but the good news of God's gracious forgiveness of sinners is only found in the special revelation of God as seen in the Scriptures. The interesting thing that we have to note in light of Romans 10 is that whether one happens to be Arminian or Reformed, it is very clear that people cannot receive Christ unless Christ is preached to them. Therefore, we need to realize our important role as God's ambassadors, reavealing to all the world the special revelation which God has entrusted to us. In order for anyone to be saved, they must hear the gospel! --Joe! |

Exactly! I would add that Gentiles, too, are self-condemned according to chapter 2 because they do by nature the things that are found in the law, demonstrating that we all possess an innate sense of what is right and what is wrong (Romans 2:14-15). --Joe! |

Dogma isn't a bad word, you know! The reason that I cannot embrace an "alternate salvation" for those who haven't heard is the following: 1. Romans 1 condemns all men. 2. We are both very familiar with all of the passages that say that Jesus is THE only way. None of them give the slightest indication that it is the only way for just those people who hear about Him. 3. If there is another way for the pagan to be saved, why did Christ have to die at all? 4. Why evangelize if preaching Christ puts the hearer in an "all-or-nothing" position where he then MUST receive Christ? 5. We have tread this road before, but the gospel has to do with God's mercy toward us, not His justice toward us. I did not receive justice when I was born again; I escaped it, thanks to what Christ had done for me in Palestine 2000 years ago. There is nothing unjust about any sinner going to hell. --Joe! |

Well, the Luke passage is a tricky one to figure out. I do think we should look at it a little more to see if we can wisely identify who each of the three servants represent. Perhaps we can get some comment from others on the forum rgarding their take on Luke 12:47-48. However, I think that the best rules of biblical interpretation call for letting the clearer passages of Scripture help us to interpret correctly the more difficult to understand. For me, Luke 12 falls toward the latter catergory. However, coming back to Romans 1, I do not see how Paul could have been any clearer in his assessment of why all men are without excuse. Whomever the servants represent in Luke's parable, it would be a contradiction in Scripture to say that there is some excuse that the unevangelized would have when they stand before God in His holiness. By the way, I do appreciate these discussions, Ed! --Joe! |

2450 | regarding the apocrypha? | Rev 22:18 | Reformer Joe | 70074
The warning in Revelation is talking about the book of Revelation, not the entire 66-book compilation, which hadn't been compiled yet. The Protestant Old Testament does not include the Apocrypha because these books are not part of the Jewish version of the Old Testament, the Tanakh. --Joe! |

"I don't know any Scientology converts or JW converts." They are out there, trust me. God brings people out of all different kinds of disbelief, and adherents to those two groups are no exception. "Why isn't the fundamentalist Christian Church bringing this fact more to light? Could it be their strict adhesion to all things Israel? Don't Israeli Jews need Christ as much as the Palestinian Muslims?" Of course they do, but many contemporary Christians are so theologically confused that they think that somehow all Jews are God's people and are somehow going to be saved apart from Y'shua their Messiah. Mix in the false notion that one must support the nation of Israel no matter how apostate they may be from the God of the Bible, and there we have our lack of evangelism to Jews and our support of all things Israeli. --Joe! |

Hmmm...wonder what the Bible has to say about Hagee: ''“The Jewish people have a relationship to God through the law of God as given through Moses,” Hagee said. “I believe that every Gentile person can only come to God through the cross of Christ. I believe that every Jewish person who lives in the light of the Torah, which is the word of God, has a relationship with God and will come to redemption."' The Bible: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." --Romans 1:16 "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes." --Romans 10:4 "Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin. But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus" --Romans 3:19-24 "We are Jews by nature and not sinners from among the Gentiles; nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified." --Galatians 2:15-16 'So the Jews were saying, "Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, 'Where I am going, you cannot come'?" 'And He was saying to them [i.e. to the JEWS], "You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins."' --John 8:22-24 And, lest we forget, the first Christians were JEWS. The sermon at Pentecost was given to JEWS. The first recorded Gentile convert is in Acts 10; before that, all of the Christians mentioned were JEWS. Jesus is the Messiah promised to the JEWS. What was the point of Jesus sending the disciples to the lost sheep of the house of Israel if they didn't need Him?!? You cited CRI as saying: '“There are right now Jewish people on this earth who have a powerful and special relationship with God,” declares Hagee in one of his books. “...Let us put an end to the Christian chatter that “all the Jews are lost” and can’t be in the will of God until they convert to Christianity! . . . there are a certain number of Jews in relationship with God right now...”' Yeah, they have a relationship with God right now, but it certainly isn't the type of relationship that one should envy, because the outcome is hell. And to think this guy is a Texan... --Joe! |
