244 | What is the biblical def of apostle | Luke 6:13 | flinkywood | 133242
Doc, I agree that Peter, the impetuous stumblebum, was perhaps the unlikeliest leader in Christendom, yet the Bible amply attests to his authority, an authority recognized by the aposotles as given him by Jesus (Matt 16:19) and exercised only by the Grace of God in the Holy Spirit. Casting lots (Acts 1:26) wasn't foolishness or gambling, but a time-honored means of discerning God's will (Lev 16:7-10; Proverbs 16:33). In the nascent Church, those eligible for apostolic office had to have witnessed Jesus' ministry in full and were charged with testifying to His resurrection (Acts 1:22). (Note that it is Peter who stands up to declare and authorize the means and ends of this particular election). Why does Matthias subsequently disappear from the narrative of Acts? Quien sabe? But it appears that the number 12 is a meaningful symbol to this startup Church (the restoration of the 12 tribes of Israel), though the necessity of maintaining 12 fades, evidently, after the death of James in Acts 12:2. Paul is an obvious exception to the incipient rule of apostolic candidacy; but isn't that the kind of exceptional surprise God likes to pull from time-to-time? Colin |

245 | The ransom - God or man? | 1 Cor 15:21 | flinkywood | 132746
Abraham was willing to sacrifice his own flesh and blood, God the angel Michael, not his own flesh and blood (Acts 20:28, NWT). Who made the greater sacrifice, Abraham or God. Is your answer to question 2 that the angel who became Satan and the angel who became Jesus were spirit brothers? Colin |

246 | The ransom - God or man? | 1 Cor 15:21 | flinkywood | 132735
Alien, This is a reposting to you. I have 2 questions about JW dogma, 1) Since Abraham sacrificed his own flesh and blood, and God only a creation, was Abraham's a more perfect sacrifice than God's? 2) Being an angel, is Jesus a spirit brother of Satan? Colin |

247 | Titus 3:5 and washing of regeneration | Titus 3:5 | flinkywood | 132538
Dalcent, I'm sure you agree that there have been holy "Protestants" and holy "Catholics" (I think particularly about Corrie ten Boom's "The Hiding Place"). It's a drag to get into a shooting match in here, especially when the crux of our calling isn't doctrinal but how we respond to Matthew 25:40, "Y respondiendo el Rey, les dirá: De cierto os digo que en cuanto lo hicisteis á uno de estos mis hermanos pequeñitos, á mí lo hicisteis." I'm confident it's possible to make a persuasive defense of Catholic faith w/o sparking a mini-reformation in this forum. Colin |

251 | Titus 3:5 and washing of regeneration | Titus 3:5 | flinkywood | 132445
Dalcent, I Googled Catholic sources for Luke 23:43. Here’s what I found. http://www.catholic.com/library/Purgatory.asp and, CCC: 1472: “..A conversion which proceeds from a fervent charity can attain the complete purification of the sinner in such a way that no punishment would remain." The NT indicates a third place, neither heaven nor hell, a place where Jesus went to preach the Gospel after the resurrection (1 Peter 4.6). Also, in the story of Lazarus and the poor man (Luke 16:19-31) Jesus describes “Abraham’s bosom” as a place far more congenial than where the rich man abides in agony. Scripture indicates Abraham’s bosom, not Heaven, as the Paradise where Jesus dined with the thief. Colin |

Dalcent, thank you. Also, regarding the thief on the cross and Jesus' promise to him, "...Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise." (Luk 23:43), since John 20.17 indicates several days elapsed before Christ ascended to the Father, what Paradise is Jesus referring to? What is the Catholic teaching on this verse? Colin |

256 | The unproductive vine? | 1 Cor 11:30 | flinkywood | 120412
Mommapbs, Remember when Makarios took his sabbatical a year or so ago? I never knew why, exactly, but I sensed he'd become exasperated by the moveable beast that is the Forum. In my early twenties I took up boxing. I thought it would make me braver, manlier, etc. I learned 2 things through boxing 1) it hurts, and 2) I didn't crave the state of mind conducive to the knocking out of an opponent whom I hardly knew and whose courage I admired. But the spirit of fighting remains in me, for this reason I don't watch boxing or other violent sports because, well, they make me feel like fighting, which also makes me feel exasperated and, frankly, stupid for watching. The Forum, though hardly a Roman forum, (a good topic for another string?), has also begun to stir me up of late. So, like Makarios, I'll be hanging up the gloves for a spell. I think you understand. 257 | CHRISTIAN SUFFERING | Heb 5:8 | flinkywood | 120400
To suffer is both unavoidable and central to our growth as Christians. Our lord learned obedience through suffering (Heb 5:8) and it was through His redemptive, suffering sacrifice that we both live and walk (1 John 2:6). If we endure suffering in faith, we shall not be disappointed (Romans 5:1-5). Indeed, it is, according to Paul, through suffering that we are made like Christ(Romans 8:17), by the help of the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:26). This is a hard teaching, but it is intrinsic to the Christian life. Thanks for your good question. Colin |

258 | The unproductive vine? | 1 Cor 11:30 | flinkywood | 120397
Mommabps, Possibly; however the NIV places the origin of Romans as c. 57 A.D. and the fourth Gospel's as c. 50-70 A.D. Could Paul have read John? Possibly. More likely is that this verse attests to the importance of confession prior to receiving Holy Communion. Paul's admonition, therefore, is to first cleanse the temple of our body, as it were, of our sin before receiving the sinless body and blood of Christ. This verse is in context of the Mass, one of the earliest and most developed traditions of the nascent Church. The vine, if you are right, may relate to the wine. This is a good question (at last!), and this will be my final posting in the Forum. I've enjoyed my stay; your posts were part of that enjoyment, Mommabps. Adios, Colin |
