242 | keys of the kingdom of heaven | Matt 16:19 | Makarios | 223638
Greetings Mareva Rua! Matt 16:19 "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." (NASB) Here's a bit of commentary about 'the keys'... "16:19 the keys. The authority to open the doors of Christendom was given to Peter, who used that authority for Jews on the Day of Pentecost and for Gentiles in the house of Cornelius (Acts 10)." (1) "16:19 keys of the kingdom of heaven. Peter is given the authority to admit entrance into the kingdom through preaching the gospel, an authority that is subsequently granted to all who are called to proclaim the gospel. (Note the contrast with the scribes and Pharisees, who shut the kingdom in people's faces, neither entering themselves nor allowing others to enter; see 23:13.) In Acts, Peter is the apostle who first preaches the message of the kingdom to the Jews at Pentecost (Acts 2), to the Samaritans (Acts 8), and to the Gentiles (Acts 10)." (2) "16:19 The Keys Of The Kingdom. These are not the keys of the Church but of the kingdom of heaven in the sense of ch. 13, that is, the sphere of Christian profession. A key is a badge of power or authority (compare Is. 22:22; Rev. 3:7). The apostolic history explains and limits this trust, for it was Peter who opened the door of Christian opportunity to Israel on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:38-42) and to Gentiles in the house of Cornelius (Acts 10:34-48). There was no assumption by Peter of any other authority (Acts 15:7-11). In the council James, not Peter, seems to have presided (Acts 15:19; compare Gal. 2:11-14). Peter claimed no more for himself than to be an apostle by gift (1 Pet. 1:1) and an elder by office (1 Pet. 5:1). The power of binding and loosing was shared (Matt. 18:18) by the apostles and other believers (John 20:22-23, compare Luke 24:33). An illustration of Peter's use of this authority as related to forgiveness (John 20:23) is given in Acts 10:43. See also Paul's use of it in Acts 13:38-39. The keys of death and the place of departed spirits are held by the Lord Jesus Christ alone (Rev. 1:18)." (3) "That the keys are those to the kingdom of heaven and that Peter's exercise of authority in the church on earth will be confirmed in heaven show an intimate connection between, but not an identification of, the church and the kingdom of heaven." 243 | were blacks a tribe of Israel? | Gen 9:19 | Makarios | 223636
Greetings Godchild59! The only truly Biblical information that describes the ancestry of the African people is found in Genesis 9:19, where it says, "These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread." (KJV) There is no Biblical connection between Africans being 'a lost tribe of Israel.' Any non-Israelite person would be considered as a Gentile, whether they have white or black skin, but God's free gift of salvation is open to all. Blessings to you, Makarios |

244 | who were the gentiles? | Matt 10:5 | Makarios | 223634
Greetings Godchild59! "Who were the Gentiles?" A Gentile is a non-Jewish person (Luke 2:32; 21:24) and not a Samaritan (Matt. 10:5). Blessings to you, Makarios |

245 | What is the definition of righteousness | Ps 1:1 | Makarios | 223580
Greetings Robertie10, Perhaps righteousness can be defined by Psalm 1:1-3: "How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers." (NASB) The words "righteous" and "just" are used to translate the Hebrew word 'yashar' with the idea that one is called righteous because he is 'right with God.' In the Old Testament, this meant that he had observed "all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord" (Luke 1:6; compare Romans 10:5; Phil. 3:6), but does not mean that the man is sinless (Eccl. 7:20). The righteous person trusted in the coming Messiah (Luke 2:25) and offered the required sacrifice (Lev. 4:27-35). Compare with righteousness in the New Testament: Romans 10:3,10; Phil. 3:4-9 and the following references: righteousness of God in Christ: Is. 54:17; Jer. 23:6, 33:16; Hos. 2:19; Mal. 4:2; Rom. 1:17, 3:22, 10:3; 1 Cor. 1:30; 2 Cor. 5:21; Phil. 3:9; Titus 2:14; 2 Peter 1:1 Blessings to you, Makarios |

246 | what calendar determined Jesus birth? | Bible general Archive 4 | Makarios | 223526
Greetings smm1033, According to Wikipedia: "For many centuries, Christian writers accepted that Christmas was the actual date on which Jesus was born.[16] In the early eighteenth century, scholars began proposing alternative explanations. Isaac Newton argued that the date of Christmas was selected to correspond with the winter solstice,[10] which the Romans called bruma and celebrated on December 25.[17] In 1743, German Protestant Paul Ernst Jablonski argued Christmas was placed on December 25 to correspond with the Roman solar holiday Dies Natalis Solis Invicti and was therefore a "paganization" that debased the true church.[11] According to Judeo-Christian tradition, creation as described in the Genesis creation narrative occurred on the date of the spring equinox, i.e. March 25 on the Roman calendar. This date is now celebrated as Annunciation and as the anniversary of Incarnation.[18] In 1889, Louis Duchesne suggested that the date of Christmas was calculated as nine months after Annunciation, the traditional date of the conception of Jesus.[19] The December 25 date may have been selected by the church in Rome in the early fourth century. At this time, a church calendar was created and other holidays were also placed on solar dates: "It is cosmic symbolism...which inspired the Church leadership in Rome to elect the winter solstice, December 25, as the birthday of Christ, and the summer solstice as that of John the Baptist, supplemented by the equinoxes as their respective dates of conception. While they were aware that pagans called this day the 'birthday' of Sol Invictus, this did not concern them and it did not play any role in their choice of date for Christmas," according to modern scholar S.E. Hijmans.[20]" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas) Blessings to you, Makarios |

247 | is gambling a sin | Hag 2:8 | Makarios | 223524
Greetings Lowrenzo, You asked, "Is gambling a sin?" "Many years ago Charles Kingsley, as "Parson Lot," inaugurated a valiant crusade against the mammon worship of his day. Of course he met with the bitter and virulent hositility of all who loved money more than justice and brotherly love. But he earned an undying reputation as the friend and champion of humanity. We want another "Parson Lot" in these days to teach us that money is not a thing to be played with at the will of its possessor. Nothing will help so much to solve certain modern problems as the dissemination of Bible teaching regarding money. The idea of the Bible is distinctly that of stewardship. The money you put away in the bank is, in a limited and mechanical sense, your own property. But looked at from the higher and more Christian standpoint, it is not yours at all. It is given to you as a trust, not as a possession. If that great and unassailable principle could prevail in the minds and hearts of men, gambling would be annihilated once and for all. Because the old stock argument in favor of betting-it generally comes from flabby, unhealthy young men of dissipated life and restricted intellect- is this: "Oh, but you know, old fellow, a man can do as he likes with his own money." Certainly; I grant that entirely. But the fact is that the money is not yours. God has placed it in your hands for fifty or sixty years, and there will come a day of reckoning when He will want to know what good you have accomplished, what poverty you have relieved and what evil you have destroyed by the powerful and influential gift which He intrusted in your keeping. One hardly likes to think what the result will be when you have to confess that you tossed the gold to the devil- that you flung it away at poker or that you handed it to some rascally poolseller." "The fact is, that nothing very helpful will be done until we clear our minds of cant. The practical common-sense of solemn dignitaries who fervently denounce betting and then sit down to play whist for dime points is somewhat difficult to detect. The wisdom of arresting one gambler and asking another to open a church bazaar is scarcely perceptible to the man in the street. Betting is fashionable; the gambler is a respected, or at least a tolerated, individual, and even the great mass of Christian men and women have not yet had their eyes opened to the awful havoc caused by this passionate lust for gain. When they see how it robs men of character, health, and friends; when they realize that horse-racing has more votaries than any religion; then, I believe, they will rise up and denounce it fearlessly. The literature of the turf is enormous in extent and worldwide in influence. It provides a risky excitement for the rich and a hideous fever for the poor. It shows men how to get hold of their neighbors' property without giving any honest equivalent, which means, in plain English, that it makes men thieves. It is simply alarming to contemplate the extent to which the deadly contagion is spreading through the country. Boys bet; young men neglect the beauties of literature for the 'tips' of sporting papers; and scarcely an office is without its sweep-stake on the Derby or the boatrace. This vice controls its victims with a fascination which is absolutely devilish, and the unutterable ruin which it inevitably works is almost heartbreaking. I therefore call upon every earnest, manly, Christian fellow to do all he can to stamp out this degrading and unchivalrous habit. For this two reasons are sufficient:- (1) It must be wrong to accept money for which you have given nothing in return; and (2) it is the very essense of selfishness to use, as Kingsley says, "what you fancy your superior knowledge of a horse's merits to your neighbor's harm." "Work faithfully," says Mr. Ruskin, "and you will put yourself in possession of a glorious and enlarging happiness; not such as can be won by the speed of a horse or marred by the obliquity of a ball." "All thoughtful and observant men must admit that materialism is the dominant peril of our age. As young men, therefore, we must be on our guard. Wealth is a useful servant when guarded by charity and wisdom, but it is a tyrannical master, and holds its subjects in galling and miserable servitude. Christ never thought much of money. The most hopeless and melancholy characters He ever drew were rich men." Taken from pages 13-19 of "First Battles, And How to Fight Them - Some Friendly Chats with Young Men" by Frederick A. Atkins. Greetings annblueyes47! Welcome to StudyBibleForum.com! As far as interaction and person to person communication on this website, we have a link under "Information" on the lower left hand column called 'About the Forum' that I highly suggest that you read before contributing regularly to this website for 2 reasons: 1) To peruse the "Terms of Use" - the link of which you can find on the 'About the Forum' page 2) So you will know what to expect as far as how you should engage this Forum being a new user. There is not a person here who can tell you not to engage in conversation with another member - it is moreso the content of what you write (must be Bible based) rather than the act of engaging in conversation that is mostly critiqued at this website. I hope that this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Makarios |

250 | Pray always pray, said Paul. What is the | Gen 1:1 | Makarios | 223419
Greetings James10, You ask, "What is the difference between prayer, supplication?" There are two verses that mention prayer and supplication: Philippians 4:6 "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." Hebrews 5:7 "In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety." Perhaps the difference between prayer and supplications can be best defined as follows: prayer - explained: Ephesians 6:18 supplications - explained: 1 Peter 5:7 Ephesians 6:18 "With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints," (NASB) 1 Peter 5:7 "casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you." (NKJV) Supplication is mentioned in addition to prayer in these verses as a reminder to us because we oftentimes forget that while we directly communicate with God in prayer, we still need to cast all of our anxieties on Him; ending our time with God by being thankful (in true gratitude) towards Him for shouldering our concerns. Excellent post, Beja! 253 | are there multiple infillings? | Acts | Makarios | 223400
Greetings lightedsteps, Good commentary! Another good verse on the topic is Ephesians 5:18: "And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit," The word 'filled' in this verse is a present-tense imperative in the Greek, which means that it should be a perpetual, ongoing experience. So, God desires that the filling of the Holy Spirit be a continual and ongoing experience. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not the same thing as the perpetual filling of the Holy Spirit. Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a one-time event that takes place at the moment of conversion (1 Corinthians 12:13). It is the baptism of the Holy Spirit that joins a believer to the body of Christ. By contrast, John the Baptist was continually filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:15, Matthew 11:11, John 10:41). The early disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit on at least two different occasions (Acts 2:4; 4:31). Therefore, the filling of the Holy Spirit may be repeated, but the initial baptism of the Holy Spirit that seals a Christian (Ephesians 4:30) for redemption only happens once. 254 | Whence cometh the races? | Gen 11:7 | Makarios | 223396
Greetings Danig, Acts 17:26-27 "and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;" Revelation 5:9 and 7:9 say that God's redeemed will be from "every tribe and tongue and people and nation" (NASB). All human beings are equal in terms of their creation (Genesis 1:28), the sin problem (Romans 3:23), God's love (John 3:16), and God's provision of salvation (Matthew 28:19). All post-flood people came from Noah's family (Genesis 9:18-19). When God confused the language of all people in Genesis 11:7, the Bible is silent in regards to whether other physiologic changes (rather than just the language) took place in order to hasten the establishment of distinct groups or nations. But we do know that God divided the nations (Genesis 10:32) and set boundaries (Deut. 32:8) for each nation. Blessings to you, Makarios |

255 | are there multiple infillings? | Acts | Makarios | 223387
Greetings lightedsteps, Acts 13:52 "And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit." Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit on at least a few occasions (examples: Acts 9:17; 13:9). The verses above provide a scriptural basis for being filled with the Holy Spirit on an occasion other than the moment of salvation (or on a 'multiple' occasion). Blessings to you, Makarios |

256 | the mark of the beast | Matt 25:41 | Makarios | 223039
Greetings DocandLinda2, Yes, the Bible indicates that hell is a real place (see Matthew 10:28 and 25:41). Revelation 14:11 indicates that those who receive the mark of the beast will go to hell. Revelation 20:4 indicates that those who will be redeemed did not receive the mark. Blessings to you, Makarios |

257 | is God and Jesus the same person? | 1 John 4:14 | Makarios | 222659
Greetings FloridaBeaches101, There are a number of verses that differentiate God the Father from God the Son, who is Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit also from either of them as distinct Persons, which substantiates the Tri-Unity of God. For instance, John 5:23, 10:36 and 1 John 4:14 say that God the Father sent the Son, and that a person can honor one but not the other (John 5:23). Galatians 4:6 speaks of God the Father sending the Holy Spirit. Therefore, Scripture shows that there are distinctions between God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, even though they are together one God, one Lord (Mark 12:29) - further giving support to the Tri-Une nature of God. Blessings to you, Makarios |

259 | MAN STEALS FROM ME AM I TO TURN MY HEAD | 2 Cor 5:9 | Makarios | 222533
Greetings Mamametal, Perhaps I can provide an answer to your personal circumstances by asking if your aspirations are centered on pleasing God (2 Cor. 5:9; Ephesians 5:10) in everything that you do and say in the situation that you are in. As Christians, we should be in the habit of seeking to please God more and more (1 Thess. 4:1) in our walk with Him each day (Luke 9:23). If we truly take 1 Cor. 10:24 literally and apply it to ourselves ("Let no one seek his own, but each one the other's well-being" NKJV), then our focus becomes less and less centered on self and more and more centered on what God wants, so that we can show mercy and forgiveness (Daniel 9:9) in much the same way that God has shown us, even though we do not deserve it. By exhibiting this mercy and forgiveness towards others, we can show our genuine quality as Christians so that we may be able to shine the light of Christ to those who genuinely need Him. Blessings to you, Makarios |
