Bible Question: What is the difference between prayer, supplication |
Bible Answer: Greetings James10, You ask, "What is the difference between prayer, supplication?" There are two verses that mention prayer and supplication: Philippians 4:6 "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." Hebrews 5:7 "In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety." Perhaps the difference between prayer and supplications can be best defined as follows: prayer - explained: Ephesians 6:18 supplications - explained: 1 Peter 5:7 Ephesians 6:18 "With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints," (NASB) 1 Peter 5:7 "casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you." (NKJV) Supplication is mentioned in addition to prayer in these verses as a reminder to us because we oftentimes forget that while we directly communicate with God in prayer, we still need to cast all of our anxieties on Him; ending our time with God by being thankful (in true gratitude) towards Him for shouldering our concerns.
