241 | Oral sex between husband and wife | Song of Solomon | Aixen7z4 | 106789
If there is no scriptural answer, it might be suggested that the matter not be discussed on an Bible forum. If is not of general interest, but a private matter, it might be suggested that it not be discussed on any open forum. A couple may decide such an issue between themselves or take it to a counselor. This is a personal opinion, for which I may be spanked, and this is not my forum. But I believe some matters must be kept private. I recommend this forum even to my patients, but I am embarrassed to see the present topic openly discussed. It has been dormant for some time and I suggest, respectfully, that it should remain so. |

242 | Do you have a Prodigal in your family? | John 13:35 | Aixen7z4 | 106699
The Bible story is of a son who went away from home and wasted his money in riotous living. Somewhere along the line someone referred to that young man as a prodigal. The term was meant to refer to his wasting his money, not to the fact he had gone away from his family. As time went on people thought the word was referring to the fact he had left home and gone away, breaking ties with his family. A dictionary does not decide the meaning of a word. It aims to reflect what people mean when they use the word. Up to this point in time the word prodigal is recorded in the dictionary to let us know what people mean when they use the word. Clearly, some people are presently using the word in a manner different from what was originally intended. In time, dictionary makers may recognize the fact that a significant part of the population is using the word in a new way. They may then listen to those folks, determine what the word means when they use it, and record it as an additional meaning. At present, “prodigal” is not a Bible term. As has been noted, it is not found in any of the current translations. If the term continues to be used, as it has been here, it may well become a part of future translations. It may then come to represent both of the major aspects of the young man’s behavior. At the risk of offending someone (That is not the intent) these statements are made here for information purposes. The writer is academically qualified to make these statements. He is willing to risk the verbal attacks of anyone, qualified or not, in order to provide the above information to anyone who is willing to learn something new. Nor is he attempting to substitute academic qualifications for Bible knowledge. He hopes we can now drop the subject of word usage and return to the topic, which is worthy of attention, and which had been lying dormant for quite some time. Let it be understood that this writer would be in favor of redefining the term so that its use as here is accurate. It matters so little what we call these people, if we are able in some way to help them and to comfort those they leave behind. Some folks watch their children walk away. Some find out after the fact that they’re not coming home. This writer works with families in this way. The pain is apparently no less for those who, like Jacob, feel bereft of their children, or who, like David, are betrayed by a child. The question still seems to be, perhaps not yet fully answered, how the Lord would have us respond to such incidents. |

243 | Then love is a litmus test? | John 13:35 | Aixen7z4 | 106692
Exactly. That is the point. He that is of God hears God's words. And God calls us to love. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loves is born of God, and knows God. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Speak the truth in love. But let your speech be with grace, seasoned with salt, lest the brother be offended. A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle. Love suffers long, and is kind; love envies not; love vaunts not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil; rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hops all things, endures all things. Love never fails. There are false prophets. But whosoever keeps his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. |

245 | dealing with a nonbeliever sister | John 13:35 | Aixen7z4 | 106625
Dear non-believer: If you are still looking for proof there is a God, please look up to the skies at night and around you during the day. Please listen to Psalm 19, a psalm by David. "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky displays what his hands have made. One day tells a story to the next. One night shares knowledge with the next without talking, without words, without their voices being heard. Yet, their sound has gone out into the entire world, their message to the ends of the earth. He has set up a tent in the heavens for the sun, which comes out of its chamber like a bridegroom. Like a champion, it is eager to run its course. It rises from one end of the heavens. It circles around to the other. Nothing is hidden from its heat. The teachings of the LORD are perfect. They renew the soul. The testimony of the LORD is dependable. It makes gullible people wise. The instructions of the LORD are correct. They make the heart rejoice. The command of the LORD is radiant. It makes the eyes shine. The fear of the LORD is pure. It endures forever. The decisions of the LORD are true. They are completely fair. They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even the drippings from a honeycomb. As your servant I am warned by them. There is a great reward in following them. Who can notice every mistake? Forgive my hidden faults. Keep me from sinning. Do not let anyone gain control over me. Then I will be blameless, and I will be free from any great offense. May the words from my mouth and the thoughts from my heart be acceptable to you, O LORD, my rock and my defender". |

246 | How can I glorify God? | John 12:28 | Aixen7z4 | 105825
That is a good word, Brother Ray, and the conclusion is rock solid. I would like to make a small point to say that it seems Paul did indeed judge himself. Point was that his was not the final word. He did tell us to judge ourselves to see whether we are in the faith, and to judge ourselves in relation to favoritism and division within the body lest, we be judged. If we fail to do that we are weak and sickly, etc. We need to search ourselves to clear our own conscience. It is good to have a conscience void of offence. Happy is the man who does not condemn himself for what he does. But we do not know our own hearts. That is why we pray, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting”. I may search myself and find nothing. My conscience may be clear. But then God speaks. Remember Job? When God spoke, he shut up and repented in dust and ashes. That is the power of the word of God. It cuts both him who teaches it and those who listen. We must all submit to the word. |

247 | How can I glorify God? | John 12:28 | Aixen7z4 | 105819
All those verses are wonderful. And now that I know them I will seek to apply them. But I expect to run into trouble as I do that. I may attempt to actually glorify God here by actually giving thanks or enumerating His good works, or by doing some other such good deeds. But I must expect to be lambasted for deviating from Bible study to actually try to glorify God here. Better to praise one of the great Bible scholars who quote these verses to us. But calm down, Aixen. I know this makes your blood boil. But what good will that do? They will only attack you for being touchy and for being to easily offended. Take the barbs. Agree to suffer. Do you mean that we can actually glorify God by suffering? Peter thought so. No. The Holy Spirit told him to tell us we could. Listen, man. Think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as you are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are you; for the spirit of glory and of God rest upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. |

248 | How can I glorify God? | John 12:28 | Aixen7z4 | 105818
Psalm 86:12 "I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever." [ESV] Lord, It has been suggested that I take a year off, during which time I can start no threads like this one. But in light of the above verse, I can't. It is such a privilege to be able to incite praise for you, even on this forum. They may bar me from it, but until then I'll say You are great and good, to have given us the Bible, and the Internet as one way to respond to it, and it is by your will that someone has started this forum. If you close this avenue to me, please open up another. And I will glorify your name forever. |

That's OK, My man. You deserve it. It amuses him when someone takes it upon himself to lecture you about the Bible!!

251 | How can I glorify God? | John 12:28 | Aixen7z4 | 105813
I think you fellows are actually glorifying God by defending each other the way you do. I mean that sincerely. There is something good about it. I hope that none of us is against the other, for that would not be glorifying to God. I hope these posts stand a thousand years and those who read them from a distance can understand. Or maybe that will be the first thousand years we will have been there, bright shining as the sun, and we'd be glad we glorified him here on earth. I want to assure you that I have no intention of taking time off to study. I've done that for a long time, longer than some of you have been alive. I will live it now. I think you men are not glorifying God by vilifying anyone who attempts to teach any one of you something. It amuses you when someone takes it upon himself to lecture any of the coterie about the Bible????? I could say you, all of you, have reached perfection, my friends. But I will reserve such praise for Christ. Excuse me. Any of you can respond to this in order to defend the other. But I will move on to other things. |

252 | How can I glorify God? | John 12:28 | Aixen7z4 | 105812
No tricks intended, my friend. I actually had the temerity to try to teach you something. I am just glad I had not quoted the entire verse. I could not imagine how you would have responded. But we must indeed submit ourselves to the word of god as written.
253 | How can I glorify God? | John 12:28 | Aixen7z4 | 105763
The scriptures are given, my friend, not for us to like or dislike. They are God's unchanging word, and we have to take them as they are given and adjust to them. Galatians 6:4 stands as written, and we will have to accept it and decide how to apply it. We will have to look at our own behavior and know whether it is bringing glory to God. While self-glorification is not in view, it does seem that God allows us to feel good about glorifying him. |

254 | How can I glorify God? | John 12:28 | Aixen7z4 | 105755
Yes. I will give thanks unto the LORD, and call upon his name, and make known his deeds among the people. I will sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, and talk of all his wondrous works. Christ has for sin atonement made What a wonderful Savior! We are redeemed, the price is paid What a wonderful Savior! I praise Him for the cleansing blood What a wonderful Savior! That reconciled my soul to God What a wonderful Savior! He cleansed my heart from all its sin What a wonderful Savior! And now He reigns and rules therein What a wonderful Savior! He walks beside me in the way: What a wonderful Savior! And keeps me faithful day by day; What a wonderful Savior! He gives me overcoming power What a wonderful Savior! And triumph in each trying hour What a wonderful Savior! To Him I’ve given all my heart: What a wonderful Savior! The world shall never share a part: What a wonderful Savior! What a wonderful Savior is Jesus, my Jesus! What a wonderful Savior is Jesus, my Lord! Glory in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. |

255 | How can I glorify God? | John 12:28 | Aixen7z4 | 105752
It is really a question for each person to ask himself and answer. The passages are there for all of us and we can know about the methods intellectually. But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself (Galatians 6:4).
256 | Does God hate the workers of iniquity? | Ps 5:5 | Aixen7z4 | 105661
Those who think God is a hater think they are following him when they hate as well. They like to accuse. They must think they are omniscient as well, 'cause they know things about people they do not know. They know who are lazy. But they're not lazy. They will keep reading the book, and they will learn. Then they will know what kind of God we really have. Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD. |

257 | Does God hate the workers of iniquity? | Ps 5:5 | Aixen7z4 | 105631
Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Col 1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled. 1Co 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. Jer 31:3 The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee. |

258 | Christians ambivalent about death? | Phil 1:23 | Aixen7z4 | 105561
One of my best friends has come out the JW camp to repentance and faith in Christ. I suspect that Aniset may be uncomfortable with those teachings as well, and may be presenting them here for patient examination. I do not believe he intends to move a rock as solid as you are, Hank. I hope we can talk with this person. Comparing Scripture with Scripture brings out the truth even in that version of the Bible.

I feel exactly the same way.
260 | Christians ambivalent about death? | Phil 1:23 | Aixen7z4 | 105556
I've not had time to read the post carefully, but I think you are saying that death is not a sad thing. To that I must agree. One of the most dramatic changes to take place at my conversion was my attitude toward death. Before, I had a morbid and constant fear of death. After I was saved I found that death had lost its sting. I live for the Lord every day, and every day I long to see Him. I have had many close brushes with death, and it has never frightened me. Someone must have already said it, but I say, "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ“. |
