241 | I am looking for a study bible.... | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 115029
I recommend the NRSV HARPER STUDY BIBLE: Expanded and Updated, study helps written by Harold Lindsell, Zondervan, 1991 (ISBN: 0310902037). (Available at Amazon.com) (Note: it is NOT the HarperCollins Study Bible that I recommend. That is an entirely different book.) I have enjoyed this study Bible for years and would recommend it to anyone. It contains study notes from a conservative, evangelical perspective. The study notes were edited by the late Dr. Harold Lindsell, an evangelical theologian known for his defense of biblical inerrancy. I see you already have the NIV Study Bible. This is one of the most denominationally neutral study Bibles I've seen. It seems to me the study notes are well-balanced, not pushing teachings from any particular denominational perspective. Finally, I recommend the online article, HOW TO CHOOSE A STUDY BIBLE by John R. Kohlenberger III at (www.equip.org/free/DB135.htm). |

242 | why don't people study the old testmant | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 115033
The starting point -- indeed the foundation -- of the entire Bible is the Torah (the five books of Moses, the Pentateuch, the first five of the OT). Sh'ma, Yisra'el! ADONAI Eloheinu, ADONAI echad [Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one]. Deut. 6:4-9 (ESV) "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. [5] You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. [6] And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. [7] You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. [8] You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. [9] You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. |

243 | Study Bible Forum or Bible Philosophy | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 115103
Don't let anyone lead you astray with empty philosophy and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the evil powers of this world, and not from Christ. Colossians 2:8 NLT See to it that no one carries you off as spoil or makes you yourselves captive by his so-called philosophy and intellectualism and vain deceit (idle fancies and plain nonsense), following human tradition (men's ideas of the material rather than the spiritual world), just crude notions following the rudimentary and elemental teachings of the universe and disregarding [the teachings of] Christ (the Messiah). 244 | 2nd ? Did Spirit save them? | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 115170
You ask: "When the Holy Spirit fell on the apostles at pentecost, was that to save them or just to give them the ability to speak in tongues?" I reply: Neither! If those are the only two options, then I have a problem or two. First, the Holy Spirit does not indwell OR fill the unregenerate, those who are hostile to God (Romans 8:7). Second, the notion that the sole reason the Holy Spirit filled (according to Acts 2:4, "filled" not "baptized") them was so they could speak in tongues is unacceptable. It defies all that we know about the Holy Spirit and His purposes. --kalos |

'The resulting misguided pronunciation...[J]ehovah, continued in English Bible translations until early in the twentieth century. Evidence from Greek usage in the Christian era points to the two-syllable pronunciation, "Yahweh."' ____________________ 'Yahweh/Yah. yhwh, the tetragrammaton because of its four letters, is, strictly speaking, the only proper name for God. It is also the most frequent name, occurring in the Old Testament 6,828 times (almost 700 times in the Psalms alone)... 'English Bibles represent the name yhwh by the title "Lord" (written in capitals to distinguish it from "lord" [adonai]).' 'In the postexilic period the Jews, for reverence reasons, did not pronounce the name but substituted for it the word adonai (lord), and in written form attached these vowels to the tetragrammaton. The resulting misguided pronunciation of the name yhwh as a three-syllable word, Y [J]ehovah, continued in English Bible translations until early in the twentieth century. Evidence from Greek usage in the Christian era points to the two-syllable pronunciation, "Yahweh."' ____________________ (http://bible.crosswalk.com/Dictionaries/BakersEvangelicalDictionary/bed.cgi) |

253 | what is a covenant | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 117244
"Because a covenant confirmed between two human parties was bilateral, some scholars have concluded that the covenant Yahweh established with human beings is also bilateral. This is not the case" "Covenant "The word "covenant, " infrequently heard in conversation, is quite commonly used in legal, social (marriage), and religious and theological contexts. "The Idea of Covenant. The term "covenant" is of Latin origin (con venire), meaning a coming together. It presupposes two or more parties who come together to make a contract, agreeing on promises, stipulations, privileges, and responsibilities. In religious and theological circles there has not been agreement on precisely what is to be understood by the biblical term. It is used variously in biblical contexts. In political situations, it can be translated treaty; in a social setting, it means a lifelong friendship agreement; or it can refer to a marriage. (...) "The covenants referred to above were between two equal parties; this means that the covenant relationship was bilateral. The bond was sealed by both parties vowing, often by oath, that each, having equal privileges and responsibilities, would carry out their assigned roles. ************************************************* "Because a covenant confirmed between two human parties was bilateral, some scholars have concluded that the covenant Yahweh established with human beings is also bilateral. This is not the case. God initiated, determined the elements, and confirmed his covenant with humanity. It is unilateral. Persons are recipients, not contributors; they are not expected to offer elements to the bond; they are called to accept it as offered, to keep it as demanded, and to receive the results that God, by oath, assures will not be withheld." ************************************************* Bibliography Information. 255 | Bible version can become an idol? | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 117535
Lorenzo: The Bible NEVER contradicts itself. I strongly urge you to disregard the following: 'When we see an obvious conflict like marriage and divorce contrasted by the two, we must allow the NT to "outrank" the OT, as Jesus took the OT to the cross with him because He fulfilled it. The Law of Moses and the OT has no authority to guide us in our spiritual relationship.' ____________________ Are We Not Subject To The Law of God? Romans 3:31 (ESV) Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law. (Amplified) Do we then by [this] faith make the Law of no effect, overthrow it or make it a dead letter? Certainly not! On the contrary, we confirm and establish and uphold the Law. (GOD'S WORD version) Are we abolishing Moses' Teachings by this faith? That's unthinkable! Rather, we are supporting Moses' Teachings. (From "Not Subject To The Law of God?" Part 8. www.yashanet.com/library/under8.htm All following Scripture quotes are from the GOD'S WORD version of the Bible, unless otherwise noted.) "The teaching that 'we are free from the Torah,' is a product of hundreds of years of anti-Semitic theology and is in opposition to Scripture. The 'New Testament,' when put back into its Hebrew context, says this about the Torah and believers in Yeshua:" Matthew 5:17 "Don't ever think that I came to set aside Moses' Teachings or the Prophets. I didn't come to set them aside but to make them come true." James 2:10 If someone obeys all of God's laws except one, that person is guilty of breaking all of them. Matt 19:17 Jesus said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you want to enter into life, obey the commandments." Revelation 12:17 The serpent became angry with the woman. So it went away to fight with her other children, the ones who keep God's commands and hold on to the testimony of Jesus. John 14:15 "If you love me, you will obey my commandments. John 15:10 If you obey my commandments, you will live in my love. I have obeyed my Father's commandments, and in that way I live in his love. Romans 3:31 Are we abolishing Moses' Teachings by this faith? That's unthinkable! Rather, we are supporting Moses' Teachings. 1 John 2:3 We are sure that we know Christ if we obey his commandments. 2:4 The person who says, "I know him," but doesn't obey his commandments is a liar. The truth isn't in that person. 2:5 But whoever obeys what Christ says is the kind of person in whom God's love is perfected. That's how we know we are in Christ. 1 John 5:3 (Revised Standard Version) For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments (Greek: entole [Strong's #1785]: ethically used of the commandments in the Mosaic law). And his commandments (entole) are not burdensome. --kalos |

256 | What do put in the perfect study bible? | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 117545
My top recommendations are the Ryrie Study Bible and the MacArthur Study Bible. What would make the MacArthur nearly perfect would be the addition of a concordance. The best one bound with a Bible that I've seen is the NASB concordance in the Zondervan NASB Study Bible. It is 101 pages in a 3-column format. That's a lot of concordance. |

257 | Bible version can become an idol? | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 117561
"Contradictions disprove truth." The NT does not contradict the OT. It is not true 'that the moral absolutes of the Law are no longer applicable to us. The New Covenant does not "do away" with the Law in that sense, but rather writes it in our hearts* (Jeremiah 31:31). 'For any system of truth to be valid, it must be consistent with itself. Contradictions disprove truth. If the New Covenant were to contradict previously given scriptures in the Law or the Prophets, then the New Covenant would not be true' (Seven Pillars of Messianic Judaism, Asher Intrater, 2003**). ____________________ *writes it in our hearts. NASB Jeremiah 31:33 "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." 'It takes unacceptable theological legerdemain to conclude that when God writes the Torah (law) on hearts he changes it into something other than the Torah' (Restoring the Jewishness of the Gospel, David H. Stern, Jewish New Testament Publications, Inc., 1988)! **"Seven Pillars of Messianic Judaism" To read the entire quote, see ID# 115300. |

(p. 1500, MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997) 2 Cor 5:21 "'sin for us.' God the Father, using the principle of imputation, treated Christ as if He were a sinner though He was not, and had Him die as a substitute to pay the penalty for the sins of those who believe in Him. On the cross, He did not become a sinner (as some suggest), but remained as holy as ever. He was treated as if He were guilty of all the sins ever committed by all who would ever believe, though He committed none. "Never read a Bible verse. That's right, never read a Bible VERSE. Instead, always read a paragraph -- at least." (www.str.org/free/studies/neverrea.htm) Revelation 4: Welcome to the Forum! First, your question. "Do you ask a question and then we all get into a dialogue or is it just ask a question, get one answer and move on?" What actually happens is you ask a question and then we all get into a dialogue, which often turns into a debate. You will find here much to inform, inspire, entertain, and occasionally confuse. A Newcomer's Guide to StudyBibleForum.com by kalos (Disclaimer: The views presented here are my own and do not necessarily represent those of our host -- the Lockman Foundation -- or a majority of active Forum members.) Following are guidelines for your consideration: 1) First, before you do anything else, learn to use the Forum Search function. It will make participating in the Forum much easier. 2) As the Lockman Foundation suggests, before you post your question use Search to determine whether it has been asked previously. This will save everyone, including you, a lot of time, repetition and rehashing of old issues. 3) Read the Terms of Use. Among other things, you will note that StudyBibleForum.com was originally intended as neither a discussion group nor a topical survey, although, regrettably, that is what it has become. 4) "Your submission may not include...[certain] characters." If you should attempt to use one of these characters, then when you go to preview your submission, you would get the error message above, listing all the unacceptable characters. Print and save that error message. (It may be the only undisputed point you'll ever find at this website.) Unacceptable characters should not be a problem here at the Forum. 5) While you are new to the Forum, you may unintentionally submit the same entry two or more times. If you do, don't worry about it. It's easy to do. 6) In the unlikely event that someone will misunderstand or disagree with a particular point of yours, try not to take it personally. 7) Always bear in mind that the Bible contains many verses which are subject to more than one interpretation (although it would be incorrect to assume that all interpretaions are equally valid). In these cases, a calm, reasoned, polite discussion is preferred. 8) There are but few basic principles of biblical interpretation. If you have not already done so, familiarize yourself with and apply them, particularly the principle of analogia scriptura which is defined here: John MacArthur writes: "One of the basic principles of biblical interpretation is the *analogia scriptura*, the analogy of Scripture. In other words, we must compare Scripture with Scripture in order to understand its full and proper sense. And SINCE THE BIBLE DOESN'T CONTRADICT ITSELF, ANY INTERPRETATION OF A SPECIFIC PASSAGE THAT CONTRADICTS THE GENERAL TEACHING OF THE BIBLE IS TO BE REJECTED." (Emphasis added.) 9) In my experience I have found that the Lockman Foundation sincerely desires and welcomes your input. Do not hesitate to contact them with your questions, comments and suggestions. 10) You can save yourself needless frustration if you remember that you need not reply to every criticism you receive. 11) An excellent standard to expect of yourself and your fellow Forum members is: "Every person has a right to their own opinion; but no person has a right to be wrong in their facts." Check your facts carefully before you post them publicly for all the world to read and remember. Careful reading, research, review and rewriting BEFORE YOU POST could save you embarrassment. 12) 2 Timothy 2:23 (ASV) "But foolish and ignorant questionings refuse, knowing that they gender strifes." (The possibility, however slight, exists that every great once in awhile, you may encounter a "foolish and ignorant" question. Avoid being drawn into a dispute over it. Stick to the issues and avoid naming personalities involved in the dispute.) WELCOME TO THE FORUM! Grace and peace, kalos |
