242 | Only 144,000 virgins in heaven? | Revelation | charis | 1252
Dear HeirofGod, What did you mean about 'virgins?' As far as I know, some sects of the Mormons also use this number, as well as the Unification Church (the Moonies). It seems that almost all cults that 'use' the Bible for their own purposes point to this number in order to attempt to 'legitimatize' their religion. In other words, theirs is the 'true' faith, and the rest of Christians are deceived or 'faith-challenged.' I find it interesting to note that some of these cults have more than 144k members (even discounting their 'inflation' of the numbers), which causes me to wonder how they account for this to their own people. Are they trampling one another for a 'reservation?' ;-) It seems to me that even Bible-believing Christians can interpret this number to be a 'saved-unsaved' or 'saved-more saved' competition. I do not know exactly what this number depicts, but I do know that is dangerous to focus too much attention on it. In Jesus. |

243 | Baptism question in Acts 2 and John 3 | Acts 2:39 | charis | 1214
Dear Bereian, A lot of people from various backgrounds heard Peter preach these words. True, most were Jews. However, suppose it were only for Jews. Then it would only be the Old Testament-Part 2. The fact that we have the rest of the New Testament proves that these words were for all who hear and believe. The alternative is ludicrous. As to the words of Jesus in the book of John, I believe the Lord was speaking clearly about water baptism and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Apparently, thinking of 'water' as being water from the womb is trying to legitimatize the idea that we no longer need water baptism. I think the book of Acts is pretty clear that water baptism is a valid act of faith, a cleansing and a strength to all believers in Jesus. See Acts 8:26-38, 10:44-47, 19:1-5 I pray that these will help you. In Jesus' name.

245 | WILL A BABY IN THE WOMB GO IN THE RAPTUR | 2 Thessalonians | charis | 1136
Dear Dan, the 'rapture' has been discussed at length. Click 'Search' on the left and enter the word, it will lead you to several listings. My comment is on the 'age of accountability.' This might answer part of your question. There is no set age for faith. A child born of a Christian parent (hopefully parents) is under the authority and covering of that parent until a time (that God sets) when he becomes responsive and responsible to call upon the name of the Lord. I would suggest that this age changes according to circumstance, society, personal maturity, and foremost, God. Though a little boy of 6 might 'really love Jesus,' I would find it hard to believe that a child of that age was truly responsible for knowing sin and serving the Lord Jesus for the rest of his life. On the other hand, an 18 year old, still unable to battle against the sin in his life, and rebelling against his Christian heritage, is stretching his 'covering.' Though a popular 'Christian' book series and movie portrayed 'empty wombs' and all children as saved and 'taken,' I don't think this is from the Bible. Last I read the Bible, we are born as children of wrath, not blameless. In Christ Jesus.

247 | why did God create the world | Gen 1:1 | charis | 1067
I like Xapis' answer! God wanted a people that would love Him and serve Him from their hearts, a people who would reciprocate to the best of their feeble abilities. If you think God created evil for His plan to work, search "God created evil?" for pros and cons. In Christ Jesus.

249 | blaspheming vs NT | Num 15:30 | charis | 1057
Dear getsmart, I think that we all blaspheme the Lord in some way or other, at some time or other. (Those of the Old Testament must have tried hard to hide it! Thank You Jesus for the New Covenant!) Now, however, to apply ourselves to denying the work of the Holy Spirit, Who wants us to know and serve God, is unforgivable. Also, it must take a lot of willfulness and effort to deny undisputable love and the knowledge of God. I hope and pray that the ability to battle against the Spirit is beyond my will. In any case, if it is fairly easy to blaspheme the Spirit, heaven will be a lonely place, huh? Use 'Search' on the left and enter "Guffaw" in the 'Word' box for additional comments.

251 | Is any type of contraception allowed? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 1047
Dear JMR, Good question! I don't think that the Bible expressly prohibits the use of contraceptives, BUT, it is the attitude of the user that is in question. If used for the purpose of 'safe sex' because you are not sure of your partner, God cannot be pleased with the attitude. This includes promiscuous sex, adultery, harlotry, homosexuality, pre-marital (trial) sex, etc. Another abuse would be selfish, such as, "kids would detract from my plans, my career, or even my ministry." The key word is 'MY.' If, however, you have a normal, healthy, natural Christian life, and decide that your family is complete, and that (to a certain degree, and led by the Holy Spirit) age, finances, marital unity, logic, etc. lead you to want to stop proliferation, I cannot see God saying either, "Take a chance on another child," or "Stop having sex with your mate." Another factor,of course,is your gender. A man seems to be able to be more legalistic about this than a woman. He doesn't have to bear the child, nor does he have (usually) as much responsibility in rearing them. The only 'pro-choice' (in this matter) that is Biblical is that a woman should have a say in how many. I belong to the former gender, but can see the latter's point of view. Finally the method of contraception is also important. Abortion is absolutely out! Some drugs are potentially dangerous, and operations are permanent. Great caution is necessary, as well as spiritual and medical counsel. As to Biblical support for my thinking, I don't think that it was an issue, as there were not many forms available. As abortion and some very dangerous concoctions were the only real options, it is no wonder that God did not speak in favor of these methods. I would be interested to hear, in the light of these comments, views from the 'other side.' I am sure there are some who would say the Bible forbids contraception, but I suspect that the view is a bit legalistic or assumptive. I pray that this portrays, if nothing else, a good argument based on my understanding of the intent of God toward us. Blessings in Jesus' name.
252 | Help with misled teen with gender issues | 1 Pet 5:7 | charis | 924
Dear SFriend, In Christ Jesus I write my advice. I have just read your question and the answers generated. Meaning no disrespect, I ask, have you consulted your pastor? From what I read in the Bible, God has provided you with a shepherd whose purpose is to help those in need. He has the spiritual authority to help you in this battle. I am not talking about professional training or licenses on the wall. You made no mention of your church or your pastor, but these have been His method of strengthening His people from the beginning. If your church cannot help you, I must wonder why not? A pastor is required to be there for you. I respect my colleague's suggestions for general help, but it seems you really need someone with a personal commitment to your family to find wisdom and healing in the Lord. My prayers in Christ Jesus.
253 | Is everything God created "good?" | 1 John 1:5 | charis | 892
Whoops! The sharp-eyed among you may have noticed that I answered the short question correctly, but the full question was exactly the opposite! So sorry. God did NOT create sin!
254 | Is everything God created "good?" | 1 John 1:5 | charis | 891
Yes! 1John 1:5 NASB "And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all." God did indeed create Lucifer, the most beautiful of the angels. However, God did not create the sin of vanity, jealousy and greed that caused him to be cast out of heaven. As far as I can see, the Bible does not point to any earlier 'start' or 'cause' of sin and evil, and pins the blame completely on Lucifer (Satan). Entertaining thoughts in this line (i.e. maybe God is the culprit) can do no good, only harm. Psalm 62:8 "Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah." In Christ Jesus, Amen! |

255 | Sounds good, scripture (pretty) please? | 1 Tim 4:8 | charis | 867
With a cherry on top? My friend, I am honored to have agreement with you. May there be much more agreement among us, by His Spirit! About supporting scripture, I can find no 'perfect' reference. How about Ecclesiastes, where the Preacher talks about excessive toil being vanity. I suppose that in the same way you cannot take money to heaven, neither can you take big muscles. As to 'couch potatoes,' Proverbs talks about laziness. As to an 'over-pumped mind,' Jesus spoke of the dangers of over-zealous religion often, citing the Pharisees, Saducees, scribes and lawyers as being close to the Law, but far from God. Sorry for the generalities. If I come up with something specific, I will post it. Let us continue to share! In Jesus.
256 | So when did "evil" start? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 838
Was Lucifer 'tempted' to be vain? No, I don't think that God is responsible for that. As far as we are told, Lucifer was the first 'sinner,'and it had to start somewhere. Frankly, I am not sure I like the phrase 'good vs. evil.' Though I don't think you meant it in this manner, many people think of it as a battle between almost equal opponents. For the sake of those who watch too many movies, God Almighty is the Creator, and Satan is just a miniscule 'wannabe,' soon to be vanquished with a breath. Though we are now temporarily living in a place heavily influenced by this petty pretender, we are citizens of the kingdom of God, and will soon live there forever. Hallelujah! Amen. |

257 | Have you ever looked at Urantia Book? | Rev 19:4 | charis | 794
Been there, done that! This is the exact challenge that a Mormon, a Jehovah's Witness, a Moonie or a Kokufu-no-Kagaku (Ogawa Ryuho's Science of Happiness)accolyte would use. I find it similar to someone who says, "You haven't really lived until you've played Russian Roulette. Sure, there is (one) drawback" I find that I have more than enough truth in the Bible, and after studying broadly various claims to 'enhanced' revelation, they are all spurious by nature. Any time I hear 'revelation of Revelation,' alarm signals go off in my spirit. Next thing said is that those who do not have this 'special' knowledge are inferior, and spiritually-challenged. It's a Devil's disguise-an angel of enlightenment. God has already sent His Spirit to guide and comfort His church. What more could we need than the Spirit of Christ? If you can come up with a short, compelling explanation of this cult, do it. Otherwise, thanks, but no thanks. May the Spirit of Jesus Christ give you peace.
258 | What was Jesus writing? | John | charis | 729
Dear K, I don't think that anyone knows what He was writing, because we are not told. However, why He was writing could be that, as with any animal, eye contact causes emotions like anger and fear to escalate. This crowd was about to 'do their duty' of killing someone in the name of the Law. Jesus, with His unprovoking nature, logic, and authority, gave an opportunity for repentance and life to this sinner. Thank You, Jesus!
259 | BAPTISIM OF THE DEAD | NT general Archive 1 | charis | 705
Dear PYLE, I have no clear understanding of this scripture, though I have heard a lot of theories. I am pretty sure what it does NOT mean. It does not mean that we can procure salvation or cleansing for one after their death. This would go against the whole of New Testament teaching of personal salvation. Salvation or cleansing by proxy is inconceivable.
260 | Where are guardian angels mentioned? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 527
Dear Gomar, Angels are God's servants, and are shown as helping, guiding and protecting His people throughout the Bible. As far as 'personal, dedicated, full-time, assigned' guardian angels are concerned, I can find no hard evidence of their existence.
