221 | Oboth to Moab direction | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 214792
Dear unicorn, This question has been asked about four times recently. When we see this kind a activity around a subject, it looks like a clear indication the it is a homework question. You probably already know what book and chapter to find the answer in the reading assignment you have been given. This also raises the question of whether you are old enough to be registered to this forum. Do you mind my asking you how old you are? |

Dear Vintage, When it becomes evident that a question is a homework question, don't you think it is irresponsible to just give them the answer, without having them at least do some research on their own? How are we helping a student by giving them their answers? Will you please help us do the right thing by these students? |

224 | Can Angels repent? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 214898
Hi Jay, Welcome to the forum! No need to apologize. That was a fair question. God did not have to give us an opportunity to repent. He could have left us in the same condition as the fallen Angels. He has given this to us by grace. He didn't have to do it. Praise God that we have that opportunity to repent! John |

225 | promotional products to customers-Bribe? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 215055
Hi Rajeeb, Thats not really a Bible question; but it does involve moral ethics, which is of great concern, especially to a Christian who wishes to please his Lord. I don't really know the nature of your business or what you may be involved in, so it is surly something for which you should pray and ask guidance. Here is the definition of a bribe. I hope this helps you. John Bribe –noun 1. money or any other valuable consideration given or promised with a view to corrupting the behavior of a person, esp. in that person's performance as an athlete, public official, etc.: The motorist offered the arresting officer a bribe to let him go. 2. anything given or serving to persuade or induce: The children were given candy as a bribe to be good. Bribe –verb (used with object) 3. to give or promise a bribe to: They bribed the reporter to forget about what he had seen. 4. to influence or corrupt by a bribe: The judge was too honest to be bribed. dictionary.reference.com |

226 | Amazing Grace! | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 215205
Dear forum members, I just wanted to share this with all of you. This morning's sunrise service, at one of our local Churches, the folks ended the service with the classic hymn, Amazing Grace, and as the words came round to, "When we've been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun", the sun shown through the clouds, clear, bright and warm, and, as the song ended... the sun, ever so slowly, sliped back behind the clouds... Amazing! :-) John |

Hi Mike, I don't know of any online historical study material, but if I may I'll offer you from my own experience that is takes years of diligent study before it all starts to come together. After thousands of hours of study, and hundreds of hours of listening to tapes cd's and online lectures and sermons, it gradually starts to all make sense. In short, there is no EASY way. Put your nose to the grindstone, study hard, and you will be rewarded for your hard work. First and foremost though, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you to gain knowledge of the things of God. Finally- "And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him." Heb 11:6 Proverbs 12:24 1 Thessalonians 5:11-12 John |

230 | Soldier fighting enemy? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 215326
Hi Rajeeb, King David was a mighty warrior and, he was called a man after God's own heart. Gideon was hiding in a winepress from the Midianites when the Lord appeared to him and said, perhaps facetiously: "The LORD is with you, O valiant warrior." Judges 6:12b, And then He (the Lord) compelled him in v14 to go and fight the Midianites. Jesus also said: "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13 The Bible, and more specifically our Lord, does say to love your neighbor, but the Bible does not say to give up your arms in order to do that. Jesus also told His disciples to buy swards, (Luke 22-36) though he didn't specifically say to use them. But He also did not ask the centurion to put down his sward before he would heal his servant. (Matt 8:5-13) Loving your neighbor, can sometimes mean, standing up and fighting for him if he is to weak to fight in order to protect himself from evil men. John |

Dear humility, I would encourage that person to read his or her Bible. And remind them that all but less then can be counted on your fingers, died in the wilderness because; although God had shown them not only the parting of the Red Sea, but many, many signs and wonders! God was with them on a daily bases, and by the pillar of fire that lighted their way by night, and the pillar of cloud that was with them and led them every day. Not to mention the Manna for their food and the Rock that miraculously poured forth water! And those are just a few, there were also the plagues He put on Egypt and more. Tell them to read the book of Exodus and then they will know these things. And encourage them to stop watching heretic telivangelists. But they perished in the desert because of their unbelief. Tell your friend that is not what the Bible says, tell them the Bible says that: It is by the Word of Truth that men are saved, not by signs and wonders. And tell them: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." Rom 1:16. "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise," Eph 1:13 It is not by signs and wonders, but by the power of the Holy Spirit working through the Word of Truth, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that mens souls are saved! 235 | Scripture search for employment. | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 215526
Dear LiveLong.LiveStrong, Welcome to the forum! There are no Scriptures that gives job-search advice that I'm aware of, and I do not wish to dampen your enthusiasm for prayer. And I hope you don’t take this wrong or take offense at this admonition. From time-to-time here at the SBF, we sometimes have special prayer requests, and there is nothing inherently wrong with that. And there are many websites set up for making such prayer requests, But Study Bible Forum, however, is set up for the express purpose of Bible study. Notwithstanding, what you have done is take Scripture out of context to support prayer requests. This practice is common to those who follow the “Word of Faith” or WOF crowd, and it is a false teaching. For instance: Mark 11:24 speaks of prayer for the things which concern the revealed will of God, and Scripture gives us many such examples. Many of which can be read at the beginning of Paul’s epistles, i.e. the revelation and advancement of the Gospel of salvation, glory for His name, the salvation of sinners, edification of the saints, comfort in affliction, strength in our faith and that of our brethren, deliverance from evil, spiritual help for holy living and sanctification to that end, faith in our hope in the life to come, etc, etc. When we pray we should follow the example of Christ and the Apostles. The prayers which we see in scripture (and the Scriptures themselves) never encourage us to pray for our worldly desires. I’m not saying of course that anyone here doesn’t want someone to find a job or that they shouldn’t pray for God’s divine intervention. But may I suggest that perhaps a better suggestion would be to say a prayer for wisdom, then find a newspaper and start looking through the help wanted adds? By the way, that posted question you responded to was from back in 11/3/07 and that user never posted anything else, so I doubt you will hear anything back. Shalom John |

236 | An Enemy Has Done This! (Matt 13:24-30) | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 215532
Dear Humility, First of all we need to be very careful not to read into Scripture that which is not there. This passage does not intimate that they are necessarily yoked together. Though they may be in consort by some social connection. And too, that we often see unsaved people in Churches who are not yoked to the true believers though they may sit next to them in the same pew. Also that we would not necessarily be those doing the uprooting. That will be left to the Angels (Matt 13:39) at the end of the Church age. In the Church, and indeed other social entities, such as family's, and the workplace etc., it is sometimes very difficult to discern who is wheat and who is not; unless you know them very well and over many years of keen observation to see and thereby know if they are indeed fruit-bearers or true wheat. This can sometimes be very difficult and can take a great deal of discernment. So there can be tares that have gained the affection of true saint's, saint's that could be offended if the tares were uprooted, and even may leave with them, causing dissension, and divisions in the body of Christ, thus damaging the wheat. So Jesus instructs us to "leave them alone". This of corse, does not mean we should tolerate obvious heresy in the Church, which should be dealt accordingly and with rapidity. I hope that helps. John |

Hi Humility, Just an added note: you may also want to read Doc's well done post, #157835 on understanding the parables as a good "teaching tool" for all of God's disciples. You will note that point 7. shows us the "Parables are intended to teach faithful disciples." John |

Dear Vintage, I'm sorry, Vintage, but this has been bothering me since I first read your post and, I just have to ask. Speaking of parables, how do we reconcile the statement: "To be a teaching tool as some have espoused, is a false assumption." When we hold it up against 2 Tim 3:16 "ALL SCRIPTURE is inspired by God and profitable for TEACHING, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;"? CAPITALS are mine for emphasis. In light of the verse above, I'm having some trouble understanding the parables being used as a teaching tool, seen by yourself as a false assumption. Can you please help me out here, this is pretty hard to understand. Can you please give us some Scripture or perhaps some reputable commentary to lend some support to so bold a statement? John |
