221 | Is 1 Cor 1:4-7 same gifts as chap 12 | 1 Cor 1:4 | Scribe | 63310
1 Cor 1:4-9 As it relates to Speaking In Tongues. In my study of this subject I have been amazed at the amount of scriptures that cover the topic of both speaking in tongues and also Spiritual gifts. I think we grow accustomed to hearing the same scriptures used by those that believe these gifts are for the church today and another group of select scriptures used by those that think it isn't and taking both sides it seems that only a very few of the vast amount of scriptures on this subject are ever contemplated. In order for me to cover them all and leave nothing unturned I will write a seperate document that I will post to the room at a later time. That being said I will leap into the discussion at the point of I Corinthians since it is probably going to be the most quoted book on this subject in this thread on this board. I was going to begin with 1 Cor 12 but having spent time meditating on it beforehand I could not help but see that 1 Cor 1 is vital to the subject as well. As a side note I have noticed that the first chapter of many books of the bible are critical for understanding the rest of the book. 1 Corinthians 1:4-9 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. First of all I would like to note that Paul in his prayers for the Corinthians had great joy and thanksgiving for the fact that they were operating in the Spiritual gifts in abundance. This is important to bring balance to what he says later in chapter 14, those passages that often seem to be the only ones some know on the whole subject of tongues that they use to make it sound as though Paul said they should not speak in tongues anymore becuase it is the lesser of the gifts. That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; It is not fair to apply your own interpretation to the words "utterance and knowledge" here. If you would treat it fairly you will notice that not only is it logical to apply the words all utterance and knowledge as a reference to the spiritual gifts they were enriched with as seen later in the book. I rely more on comparing certain truths with one another than I do on the exact syntax of the original language so I am more persuaded by the method of seeing certain concepts and understandings in the bible reiterated by Paul in different ways than I am haggling over the exact tense of a greek word. Therefore I am persuaded that my interpretation of the above quote is correct (that it applies to spiritual gifts) because of verse such as these… 2Co 8:7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. 1 Corinthians 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 1 Corinthians 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. I am not a Greek scholar, however leaning upon the understanding of those that are, and that have written commentaries for our edification I find that a brief review of commonly available online commentaries show that most of these scholars were convinced that the gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned later in the chapter is what Paul is referring to when he uses the phrase.. “enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;” Albert Barne’s Notes on the New Testament The People’s New Testament Commentary Thompson, (Thompson Chain Reference (utterance given in aid of religious testimony) John Nelson Darby, Synopsis of the Bible John Gill’s Exposition of the Bible Matthew Henry Part 2 of this post will follow immediately |

222 | OT practices not followed today? | Rom 14:5 | Scribe | 58828
Romans 14:5-6 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. Good Question. The New Testament had much to say about how such things as all meats were indeed clean and the message behind the dietery laws was the point, though in thier blindness they never did get it. The Truth has now come which is Jesus Christ and our personal relationship with Him. Sin is still around and we must resist it but we do so by the more obvious methods of not "eating unclean things" such as watching ungodly TV shows that fill our minds with sexual lusts, or not "touching the unclean things" such as living in sexual sins, alcohol, anger wrath, pride, and other sins of the flesh. The blind man will not eat pork but will sleep with a new girlfriend every few months. The blind Jew will keep laws that are convienient to give him a sense of legal obligations yet not ones that he considers too much of a drudgery or ones that might be impractical. The reason some Jews who do not believe in Jesus will keep some Laws and not others is that they have been emboldened to approach their religion this way through false teachings in the Talmud going back to the time of Christ and built upon so that they keep "for the law of God" the traditions of men. These traditions have changed the Law of God to make it more palatible to the people and more beneficial to the teachers (such as monetary giving). The Lord will not accept it and they will all be ashamed in the end. The honest one how really attempts to keep all the law will end up having faith in Jesus as the fulfillment of the Law. |

223 | "women keep silent in the churches" | 1 Cor 14:34 | Scribe | 58825
As you stated the context about keeping silent in reference to asking questions disorderly is correct. To go beyond that is to make up your own anti-women doctrine not support by the context. I do not mean you personally but anyone that attempts to teach more than what is said here. Paul used the same terminology when he said ... 1 Corinthians 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.... and again... 1 Corinthians 14:30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. The same greek words and the same context so if a person would launch out on a "women cannot speak in the ministry gifts in the church false teaching" then it seems that there is just as much here to say a man cannot speak either. For twice the pronoun "He" is told to keep silent in the church and only once it says a woman should keep silent. So it seems to me that if you cannot understand the context based on "give place" or silence as in "yield the floor" or "do not disrupt" then you would at least apply the same error of heurmeneutics for the man that was told to keep silent in the church as well. I am being ludicrous to make the point that the instruction is that the women stop being disruptive.. not a ban on women in ministry. Here is proof that women were accepted in the new testament church as both teachers and ministers... Acts 21:9-11 And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus. And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. This shows that in meeting together the women did operate in these gifts and it was a blessing to the body. May you also experience the edification that comes when all saints, both men and women allow the Spirit of God to operate through them in the mutual edification that comes only when we meet together corporately and let God have control. Romans 1:12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. |

224 | cannot out-sin the grace of God? | Heb 4:1 | Scribe | 58821
Hebrews 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. I am not sure what the phrase was meant to say "you cannot out-sin the grace of God." You cannot sin so much that God cannot save you. Or let me say it like this. No man has sinned to such a degree that the blood of Christ on the cross could not pay for it. However Faith must be exercised on the part of the believer and Faith that brings salavation teaches us to deny ungodly lusts. The Grace of God is such that if we exercise this true faith we are promised salvation. If on the other hand we do not exercise faith but rather sin continously with no heart of repentance and faith indulging in the lusts of the flesh, then how can we say we have faith? And even if we once had faith, but choose not to have faith today then we have no promise of Grace. Grace is only to the believer. And a believer is defined differently in the Bible than many so called believers might think. This is the definition of saving faith... Titus 2:11-12 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; |

225 | Israel becoming a nation? | Is 18:1 | Scribe | 57383
Is 18:1-7 Isaiah 18:1-7 Woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia: That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled! All ye inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, see ye, when he lifteth up an ensign on the mountains; and when he bloweth a trumpet, hear ye. For so the LORD said unto me, I will take my rest, and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs, and like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest. For afore the harvest, when the bud is perfect, and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks, and take away and cut down the branches. They shall be left together unto the fowls of the mountains, and to the beasts of the earth: and the fowls shall summer upon them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them. In that time shall the present be brought unto the LORD of hosts of a people scattered and peeled, and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden under foot, whose land the rivers have spoiled, to the place of the name of the LORD of hosts, the mount Zion. What do you think this means? |

226 | Is "Revival" A Biblical Concept? | Ps 85:6 | Scribe | 56062
It is probably a post book of Acts concept since the book of Acts is the ideal (inspite of the imperfections) we would not read of a need for a revival until we get to Revelation chapters 2-3 then we see Jesus calling the church to return to their first love (even if that applied only to the church of Ephesus, we still see that there was a call to return on a local assembly level) So if we are speaking of a local church being called to repent and return to what they once learned and knew then yes it is biblical. |

227 | how old? | Gen 6:3 | Scribe | 56055
There is no mystery here. God said it would be 120 years that he would let them live. After that he brought the flood. If you read it in context it is obvious. Only when people teach it or quote it in a sermon do people get this idea of it being a declaration of a lifespan of a human. Then once they have that in their minds they read it thay way and when someone says .. read the context and understand that the flood came 120 years later,,.. they are afraid to change their minds becuaes their pastor taught that this was a statement about lifespan and after all.. he is the pastor and he knows more.. etc etc.
228 | What do the 120 years pertain to? | Gen 6:3 | Scribe | 56053
Have you looked this up in commentaries and in other versions? I doubt you will find a commentary that states this had to do with lifespan of men. Not only does the context demonstrate that God was giving men 120 years to repent, but the time frame until the flood came also backs this up. The age of men after has at times seemed to be about 140 years in some cases but for many thousands of years the age David gave of men being allowed to live about 80 years seems to be what God established this side of the flood. Psalms 90:10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. I just did a brief look up in about 5 commentaries and they all said that the 120 years hear in Gen was in reference to 120 years until he would bring the flood to judge them. Not sure where the idea that it was a statement regarding lifespans came from, I never thought that when I read it the first time. Though I have heard others that thought that. I guess it sounds more like that from the KJV which is my favorite so it might have been "preached" around through the years as being somekind of declaration of lifespan by those who read it wrong. |

229 | Is smoking a sin? | 1 Cor 3:16 | Scribe | 56051
I think you will get different answers. The main point would be to allow God to have total control of your life. If you know that God wants you to quit then you can have faith that God will help you. I can tell you from experience that I went through the same question when I was saved. I smoked for several months before I even thought about whether smoking was a sin or not. I was born again and still smoked. There came a point in my spiritual growth within a few months when I realized God was convicting me of this unhealthy habit so I began to pray about quiting. To make a long story short the Lord taught me some great truths about resisting sin. In a nutshell I learned that I needed to be willing to suffer in the flesh to cease from sin. I told the Lord that I would suffer withdrawal of nicotine even to to point of death than to deliberately sin against him and grieve His heart with known sin. I went through a week of withdrawal and then I found the smell of ciggarettes very irritating and obnoxious. God will deliver you if you are willing to suffer for Him. This is how we should live for the Lord. Is sexual temptation strong for you? Then be willing to suffer the denial of yielding to it even to the point of death.. what will happen? You will get victory over it and it will become offensive to you outside of marriage. Name any type of sin, if you are willing to suffer in the flesh to cease from it, you will soon be free and strong in that area of your life. Only those that keep yielding to it stay addicted. God Bless you as you follow Him. |

230 | What do the 120 years pertain to? | Gen 6:3 | Scribe | 56033
Neither. It means that God will let men live 120 years longer and then the Flood will come and wipe them all out. It was not a declaration of a lifespan for humans. Also notice that is directly related to the fact that the sons of God (those that were wanting to call themselves by the name of the Lord Gen 4:26) began to corrupt themselves by marrying ungodly women from Cains camp until there were no righteous people left but Noah's family.
231 | isaiah 65:20 ? | Isaiah | Scribe | 55706
The reason strongfellow gives for saying heaven is seen here... Isaiah 65:17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. The new earth will have a "new Jerusalem" We know that prophecy in the old testament will skip whole ages in one verse. In Joel 2:28 you have an example often used to demonstrate this idea. Peter quoting Joel on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2 says "this is that..." but then we know that the rest of the verse was not yet,.. the part about the moon turning to blood and the day of vengeance of God. So it could be that though Verse 17 mentions the coming new heaven and new earth, the prophecy then shifts to a promise of something in Jerusalems future. A 100 years fits into the present time. Maybe the promise is that God will restore Jerusalem and they will prosper to a degree that they will have good health and hospitals and medical care etc. If it is referring to the millenial I think that 100 is a bit short don't you? I mean why not 1000? Now shifting from this passage to Revelation I believe that the New Jerusalem is a spiritual revelation of something bigger than we can comprehend. I don't think it is about a literal city with streets of gold, but a revelation of something better than streets of gold but we cannot understand it becuase eye has not seen nor has the mind of man ever comprehended the invisible things of heaven. May God bless you in your study of His word. |

232 | What is the meaning of "line upon line" | Is 28:10 | Scribe | 55629
It seems to me that the context of Is 28 leads one to think that this idea of line upon line and precept upon precept here, as spoken of in this context in this passage is something that the Lord did not want them to have to rely on to know Him. It seems that the message is that He would that they come closer and have a more Spirit Filled relationship with Him, but they would not. Instead thier answer is "no, we don't need all that intimate stuff. We would just like a list of rules and we will keep them, thank you very much." So God says "fine then I will give you line upon line and precept upon precept that you may go and walk in them and fall and be broken because you will all miserably fail." However he who would know doctrine (true Holy Spirit doctrine) are those that are as they that are weaned at the breast of God almighty, they will intimately walk with Him in relationship and the truths of the word will be made alive by virtue of the Holy Spirit living in them and by their walk of faith and utter dependance on the Lord. If they will... this is the rest that God will give them. Not the sabbath day but the rest of the Holy Spirit in them and leading them. Not a list of rules like sabbath rules and such, but the Holy Spirit in them saying .. this is the way walk ye in it. Not line upon line (rules to keep) but even this Filling of the Holy Spirit and recieving gifts of the Holy Spirit for service such as the gift of tongues which is prophesied in this passage by Paul as having to do with tongues (1 Corinthians 14:21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.) Yet for all that they will not hear. If this prophesy is about tongues among other things it speaks of and Paul said it was, then we can logically conclude that the subject also includes this experience that always accompanied tongues which was the baptism of the Holy Ghost, so when he says "who will know doctrine?" and answers with "He that is weaned from the breast" and then contrasts it with... Isa 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. Isa 28:12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. And again contrasts this with... Isa 28:13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. He makes it very clear that there is a difference between a walk of line upon line and a walk of the refreshing rest of the Holy Spirit. I understand that we must live our faith by the Word of God and we must take all scriptures into account when understanding doctrine, but that is not what line upon line means in this passage. This line upon line here means more like a list of rules to keep so you can appease your conscience yet not really love the Lord with your whole heart. It is a snare. As I heard a brother of old once write.." A snare of a step in the right direction.." it is good to keep the "rules" but it is not enough to really know the Lord. If you would Know the Lord you must allow His Spirit to completely own you. My God bless you in your study of His Word. |

233 | What is the meaning of "line upon line" | Is 28:10 | Scribe | 55557
I have been studying this in context and I am understanding it differently than the way it is most commonly preached. Can you give me your insights on this verse. What do you think it means by "Line upon Line, precept upon precept?" there is no reason to quote Matthew Henry or other well known commentaries, I would be interested in your thought based on the logical reading of the context. Thanks.

236 | Dreans, and Angels? | Heb 1:14 | Scribe | 55190
Continued from last post.... One thing that these dreams do is to help guide you in those specific ways that help you in your own personnal battle against the strategies of satan that are being launched against you and your ministry. We are all different and one persons battle differs from another. God knows what you are facing and will face, where your weaknesses are and what you need to be working to strengthen. So everything you need for life and godliness are contained in the Word, God will use a dream to drive home a specific promise or truth from His word that you need. Consider these God given dreams as sermon from God to you always using the written word truths to instruct you but specifically something that is urgent in your life to get a grasp on. Sometimes these dreams will have to do with more people and speak of a bigger picture than your life only. God will and does give dreams that relate to world events and prophecy and these type of dreams are more common among leadership whose lives effect more people and whos decisions effect more people. There is much to say about dreams than what is usually said. I have gone to long to comment on angels. :) |

238 | Dreans, and Angels? | Heb 1:14 | Scribe | 55187
Acts 2:17 makes it clear that the prophecy of Joel were to apply to what they were witnessing when they said "what is this" and so Peter says in this context the promise is to you and your children and all that are afar off, that applies to us and not just the far off of other countries. So we are now we also on whom the end of the world has come are going to have visions and dreams, and prophesy. When they experienced these things they did not elevate them over the scriptures. Of course we read the word and follow it as our only rule of faith and practice. However when the Lord wants to lead someone more specically and in a personal manner as it relates to their local church or family or personal lives they can and often do have dreams. These dreams stand out from the rest. When you have one you will often awake in the middle of the night with a sense of urgency to write it down so you wont forget it. The Lord will give you the meaning. Of course we know that if you think the meaning is contradictory to scripture then you are wrong it is not from God. When teaching about dreams you have to say that to weed out the flakes and the self willed disobedient that want to use any excuse to disobey the word. But most often you will hear teachers make that the main point of their teaching on dreams and never say anything else. Really that part about flaky people is a sidenote just to make sure no one misunderstands you. After having said it there is much more to the subject of dreams from God for instruction and guidance. I will attempt to give an example. A saint has a dream the dream is full of detail and even while they are dreaming they know the dream is a message from God trying to teach them something, they will get a moment of clarity where they know they are in a dream and they know it is not a normal natural dream but a God given dream. They will try to pay attention to the subject and details and tell themselves they need to remember this when they awake. It might be a dream of them preaching to thousands in a stadium.. and they are being prepared to go on the platform.. they are aware of a sin among the leadership that put the meeting together, it is an evil sin, but you cannot remember what it was.. the men ask you privately that they want you to come up and preach to the people but you need to not worry about the sin these leaders are in and forget about it, don't tell the people.. You know, (you are not sure how) that you are not to compromise and gloss over the sin of this group of men.. You tell them.. "I am convinced that I will help the people more by walking in obedience to God than speaking a thousand words in that mic." and you walk away.. Then you wake up. It is the middle of the night.. You know you need to grab a pen a write what you just experienced in that dream. That dream will help you in the near future in something you are going to face. These thing happen today but most christians are too full of unbelief to believe that God will do it and they will discount it all with a sentence from an unfruitful intellectual christian that says the canned ..."we don't need dreams we have the Bible.. forget about it." and if the one who says it is a pastor, then many christians will forget about the dream. It only takes a day or two and they will be saying.. I had an incredible dream the other night, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was (if they did not write it down). Then sometime in the future, it may be soon or far.. This dreamer will be faced with a choice to compromise in an area of disobedience to the word by men who might be considered authorities in the church or intellects or smart christians that know more than you and they will with religous teaching try to tell you that you will minster to others more effectively if you follow their dead pattern of compromise and unholiness. (but they will use more smooth words to say it) and this dreamer will fall into their trick becuase he will forget what God told him in a personal way in a dream. Even though all truth is in the Bible there is a special strength that comes in God speaking to us in a dream the same Scriptural truths. ....Continue next post

Interesting. I have many great writings from God gifted women who have written doctrinal truths from the Word down through church history. Seems that when I read it, I am getting taught and they are women and I am a man. I guess the Lord can't be put in a box. Praise God for that.

I think I follow the pattern of Christ in my question in the exact same spirit of his question...Luke 14:5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? Or WHAT IF YOU HAVE A OX fall into a ditch on the sabbath? Yes the scripture says not to use the OX on the sabbath but you in your heart know that God is not against you getting that OX out of that ditch even though some legalist could preach a perfect sermon using the scriptures to back him up that you must not do it." Yet you know that my "what if about ministry work by women is real, it happens all over the world, and they will be blessed if they ignore condemnation from modern "pharisees" who strain at a gnat and swallow a camel in not seeing the heart message of Paul which is not that woman cannot minister the Gospel in all the gifts of God but that she should not pridefully challenge a man's authority. The context that a woman should not teach was not "a woman should not Preach and teach the word" but rather "a woman should not teach a man or in other words usurp authority over a man, or in other words, question him in a challenging dishonest way not wanting answers but wanting to provoke, and she should be humble and kind and respect her husband. This passage people love to use does not say she should not teach the bible. The words "teach, nor usurp authority" go to gether they explain each other, the teach here means to teach down at a man such as scold him as a child. has nothing to do with teaching the Bible in church or anywhere else. But this has been so misquoted it is hard for anyone to read only what it says without fitting their own words in the sentence. I do so now just to make it clear that it did not say a woman cannot preach the word.
