222 | ADULTRY VS BIGAMY #3 | Ex 21:10 | BMyers | 221924
Well, I will take a little different approach. The Bible states we should obey the laws of the land (Romans 13:1-7). Since the United States law prohibts this behavior, you would be wrong in committing this act. Before you ask, if the law is against God's law, then you have to obey God's law (Acts 5). Brad |

223 | Are these two different events? | NT general | BMyers | 221879
I would say that there is not an error in translation. You have the same event being recorded by two different authors with each putting in what he feels of value and according to his own writing style. To give you a quick example, when the police are interviewing people and their statements are 100 percent the same, it brings into question if the individuals being interviewed have been collaborating on their statements. So, I wouldn't expect the Gospels to be 100 percent the same (because they are written by different individuals), yet the important details to match (the same when interviewing someone). Hope this helps, Brad |

224 | At what age women took vows not to marry | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 221843
I don't believe that it is stated in the Bible (is there a verse you are thinking of?). This topic is more of a cultural topic which would require understanding the culture of the time. Based on my very limited knowledge of middle Eastern culture, I believe it was the parents who would make this decision and not the girl/young lady. Brad |

Never thought about that one. :) Brad |

226 | why is 666 the mark of the beast? | Revelation | BMyers | 221823
18 Here is wisdom Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six. (NASB) The reason is because the Bible says so. Beyond that, people have made different guesses on why the number, but the Bible doesn't say. Brad |

227 | how did god spank children | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 221807
Right off the top of my head, I don't know of any phrase where God physically spanked a child in the manner that we would today. In the same token, if your are referring to the general principal of discipline, there are several examples, starting with Adam and Eve in the garden. Brad |
||||||
228 | spoil the child , use the rod | Proverbs | BMyers | 221805
That phrase is not in the Bible. It is from an old English poem Love is a Boy, by Poets styl'd, Then Spare the Rod, and spill the Child. (according to the UK website, spill means spoil). The closest you will find in the Bible is in Proverbs: Pro 13:24 Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. Brad |

229 | how many times did they wrap jesus body | NT general | BMyers | 221757
Joh 19:38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Joh 19:39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. Joh 19:40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Joh 19:41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. Mar 15:46 And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. Mat 27:59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud The Bible doesn't say. Brad |

230 | Resurrection Day or easter ? | 2 Tim 2:4 | BMyers | 221704
Act 12:4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. (KJV) Definition of Easter according to Webster: a feast that commemorates Christ's resurrection and is observed with variations of date due to different calendars on the first Sunday after the paschal full moon. So in my opinion, when I call the celebration of Christ's resurrection Easter, I'm using the correct English term for it. Just my two cents. Brad |

231 | NASB leaves out baptism from Koine Greek | Matt 20:22 | BMyers | 221685
If my understanding is correct, Koine Greek refers to the language (basically common Greek). The phrase you are referring to is found in some manuscripts, but not every manuscript has this phrase included in it. Based on the translators desicions on which manuscripts are the most reliable, the phrase is not included. Most modern translations do not include this phrase which is found in the KJV, the NKJV includes the phrase with a footnote saying it is not included in the NU text. Brad |

232 | Who's the woman who washed jesus feet | John | BMyers | 221657
Joh 12:2 So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Joh 12:3 Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. Joh 12:4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, Joh 12:5 "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" Joh 12:6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. Joh 12:7 Jesus said, "Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. Joh 12:8 For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me." (ESV) Brad |

233 | ? for Bible historians on translations | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 221541
If your character is devout Roman Catholic, she was most likely exposed to the Bible in Latin. If my memory serves my correctly, the Latin Vulgate was the only approved Bible at that time for Catholics (which most common people did not have a copy of). The Douay-Rheims Bible (which I believe came out in the 1600's) would have come into play at sometime during this period, but I don't know how quickly it circulated (plus quick today and quick back then is vastly different). One place you might seek answers is the Catholic Church. Send them an e-mail. I have asked questions before and the response has been friendly and informative. Brad |

234 | Eye for an Eye | Ex 21:24 | BMyers | 221265
Just to add a footnote, murder is defined as the crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought (Webster) were as kill is defined as to deprive of life : cause the death of (Webster). So if the verse was translated as 'kill' then there would be an issue, but when translated as 'murder', there is no issue with capital punishment (based on the definitions). Brad |
||||||
235 | Eye for an Eye | Ex 21:24 | BMyers | 221264
I believe thou shall not kill is actually an incorrect translation, the correct should be shall not murder, which I believe most modern translations have corrected. Exo 20:13 "You shall not murder. Brad |

236 | Who did God use in the bible? | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 221144
I guess it depends on how you define "supercool", but I can think of several, Moses, Noah, Abraham, David, Elijah, Elisha, Mary, and Paul just to name a few. Brad |

237 | Who were the 1st Jews (Judah's tribe ?) | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 221084
I've pretty much quit worrying about what others call me (as long as they don't call me late for supper) and worry about what the Lord thinks and I think the title that would fit you Doc, is a free child of God who is an heir by His grace. Gal 3:22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. Gal 3:23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. Gal 3:24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. Gal 3:25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, Gal 3:26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. Gal 3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. (ESV) Brad |

238 | God turns His face from Christ on cross | Matt 27:46 | BMyers | 221080
I believe it is based off of Matthew 27:46. I've heard sermons before saying that God couldn't or wouldn't look on His Son covered in sin. I don't know of a passage that says God turned His back on Christ, but I've been wrong before. Brad |
||||||
239 | Who were the 1st Jews (Judah's tribe ?) | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 221078
The actual term “Jew” was first used to describe the tribe of Judah in 2 kings 25:25, which is after the tribes had split. Yet, defining “Jew” also can mean “one whose religion is Judaism” (Webster). Judaism means “a religion developed among the ancient Hebrews and characterized by belief in one transcendent God who has revealed himself to Abraham, Moses, and the Hebrew prophets and by a religious life in accordance with Scriptures and rabbinic traditions” (Webster). So, by this definition, the Levites could be considered Jews. Brad |

240 | why 6 hurs on the cross | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 221076
Because he didn't want to hang for seven? I can't think of any scriptures that designate the six hours on the cross as anything significant beyond the obvious fact of what was accomplished by Christ through this act. Brad |
