221 | What is Zion? | 2 Sam 5:7 | Hank | 188290
Hi, Kingschild - Zion is not a who but a what, the what being the city of David, i.e., Jerusalem (2 Samuel 5:7). .... Zion is used in Scripture in a number of other ways also, e.g., in reference to (1) the Temple built by Solomon, Psalm 2:6; 48:2 ..... (2) the city of God in the new age, Isaiah 1:27; 28:16; 33:5 ....... (3) the heavenly Jerusalem, Isaiah 60:14; Hebrews 12:22; Revelation 14:1. This is the place where the Messiah would appear at the end of time. --Hank
222 | Saying "AMEN"...outloud? | Deut 27:20 | Hank | 188271
Hi, Mouse - You've received some good answers, and I'm most disinclined to find any fault with showing assent to a point by voicing an occasional amen to it. I do it myself from time to time. ........ Your story about the disserter brings to mind this one. A country fellow who was accustomed to saying amen in church when he felt like doing so, moved to the city and went to the worship service of a big downtown church. True to his custom, he said a few amens during the service. At the end of the service a couple of deacons approached him. ......... "You're welcome to worship here," they said, "but you're going to have to tone it down. We don't go for this amen stuff at this church." ........ "But, I've got religion," the country fellow told them, to which they responded, "Well, you didn't get it here." --Hank

Dear NightJay0044 - The Forum has benefitted from many of your questions over the years, and you have received responses to all of them which, it is hoped, have also benefitted you. But the question you have posed today, dear friend, being one that calls for personal counselling on a specific situation, is one that does not come under the canopy of questions that the Forum is designed or equipped to deal with. Therefore, it is recommended that you seek advice and counsel within your community, preferably from your pastor or other trained Christian counselor. We look forward to your continued active participation in Study Bible Forum. As ever, Hank.
225 | gap therory | Gen 1:1 | Hank | 187986
chach - Thanks for your question which, by the way, is one that turns up fairly frequently on SBF. Therefore, please allow me to name a couple of sources that you may find helpful. The first is an article by Dr. Henry Morris called, "Why the Gap Theory Won't Work." You can find this article by going to http://icr.org/article/826/ ..... Dr. Morris calls the Gap Theory "one of the popular devices for trying to accomodate the evolutionary ages of the geologists and astronomers." ....... Two posts from SBF archives may be of interest to you also. They are posts 8321 and 17576, which you can access by entering the post numbers, one at a time of course, in the box under Search. ....... The Gap Theory is a man-made contrivance which, not unlike other fanciful theories, has no foundation in Scripture. --Hank
226 | defiling bodies by eating meat? | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 187953
Angel72 - Are you asking about the Bible's teaching on eating meat, period; or are you extenting your question to the growth hormone controversy, or wider still, to encompass genetically engineered foods in general? If such a broad range is within the purview of your question, I'm afraid it takes us beyond the parameters of Study Bible Forum to address issues of this type on which, so far as I know, the Bible is silent. The issue becomes less a spiritual one than a nutritional or scientific one. There is a book on nutrition by a good friend of mine, Rex Russell, M.D., called "What the Bible Says About Healthy Living" that you might find to your liking. Dr. Russell is a regenerate believer in Christ and a practicing physician. ....... Since the time of the Noahic covenant (see Genesis 9:1-17), man has been free to eat animals for sustenance, although a distinction was made between clean and unclean animals even before the Flood (see Genesis 7:2, for example); and this distinction was specified in detail in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14. --Hank
227 | What are the teachings of these things | NT general Archive 1 | Hank | 187952
yowege - How much information are you looking for on these isms? If a scant definition is all you want, a Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary will give you that. If you want a bit more, try Google by doing this: type in the box the words... define: Platonism ...... Then do the same for the remaining terms. If this is not enough, your library will have whole books devoted to these topics. ..... But Study Bible Forum, being dedicated only to matters that pertain directly to Scripture, is not the place to do research on philosophy or other secular subjects. --Hank
228 | Can you lose your salvation? | John 5:24 | Hank | 187800
Dear Cheech - Welcome and thanks for your question. ...... The Bible teaches clearly that salvation is wholly of God, that man can neither save himself nor keep himself saved, and that this salvation is by grace through faith in Christ Jesus, not in any wise on the merit of man's works, but on the basis of the redemption of Christ, the merit of His shed blood. See John 1:12; Ephesians 1:4-7; 2:8-10; 1 Peter 1:18,19. ....... Moreover, the Bible teaches that the redeemed once saved are kept by God's power, thus being secure in Christ Jesus forever. The kind of life that God gives to regenerate believers in Christ is eternal life (John 3:16), which, by defintion, lasts forever. Here are some more Bible references for your study: John 5:24; 6:37-40; 10:27-30; Romans 5:9-10; 8:1, 31-39; 1 Corinthians 1:4-9; Ephesians 4:30; Hebrews 7:25; 13:5; 1 Peter 1:4,5; Jude 24. ....... This doctrine which I have described here in the briefest way possible is known as the 'eternal security of the believer.' Another name with a similiar meaning is 'the perseverence of the saints." But I would like to footnote here that this doctrine by no means permits the use of Christian liberty as an excuse for sinful living and carnality, for doing things which the Bible forbids. That is a false teaching called antinomianism, which is bereft of biblical support. Please see Romans 6:15-22; 13:13-14; Galatians 5:13-26; Titus 2:11-14. ...... Again, salvation is wholly of God. Man has no ability to save himself, neither can he keep himself saved by works or any other means within his power. --Hank

Dear Azure - You made history today, being the first person I've ever known to request an encore performance of my feeble efforts at poetry. :-) So, not wishing to disappoint, I'll try to reconstruct the jingle, or a reasonable facsimilie thereof, that once appeared in my user profile. 234 | What is the definition of cultist? | Is 43:7 | Hank | 187626
Psalm 25 - Happy to oblige! For a critique of Watchman Nee, please visit http://www.apologeticsindex.org/n01.html ....... and for Witness Lee, go to http://www.open-letter.org/ ..... Beyond doubt there are many groups and organizations that are peddling false doctrine. It doesn't strike me as crucial whether we pin "cult" labels on them. Semantics is no key issue here. The only question worth asking is, Are these people teaching New Testament Christianity or a false doctrine? I've been a follower of Christ for well over half a century, and during this time, it grieves me to say, I have seen the genesis and proliferation of quirky cults and sects of a broad variety of stripes and feathers. ..... Unfortunately I am unable to speak to your question of "the dozens and dozens" of study Bibles that are riddled with error. I am not aware of the number, though there are some that I don't want in my library for any number of reasons, but the ones I've rejected don't meet the "dozens and dozens" criterion, simply because I haven't examined that many. This says nothing about the number of quacks who are able to persuade an equally quacky publisher to publish his theological blunders, who somehow is able through hype to persuade a gullible reading public to waste their money on such useless fluff. It simply means after all these years I've learned not to waste my time even to crack the pages of works whose authors I know to be less than orthodox. To illustrate my point: I'm not even vaguely interested in any study Bible by Joyce Meyer, Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland .... or anyone else of their ilk. . ....... The study Bibles and commentaries I've thought enough of to purchase are few, some half a dozen or so. I think that the Christian at some point in his sacred journey should devote increasingly longer periods of time with the biblical text and shorter with the commentators, helpful though many of them be. I was first exposed to this good advice by none other than John Calvin, by the way. His writings, I mean. I'm not quite old enough to remember him personally! ..... Well, Psalm 25, that's my daily dose, and it is hoped that in some of it you may find a little something you can use. --Hank
235 | Who was Barabbas? | John 18:40 | Hank | 187597
Congo - All that Scripture says of Barabbas is found in Matthew 27:16-26; Mark 15:7-15; Luke 23:17-25; and John 28:38-40. SBF tries to restrict itself to what is revealed in Scripture; hence, this is not a web site that contains a great deal of secular history. You can always visit a library or give Google a shot at it and see what you find. --Hank
236 | Who and why..... must be a reason? | Is 43:7 | Hank | 187426
Ps. 25 - When I was one and twenty, I knew almost every thing; now that I am two and seventy, I know almost nothing! If there is any mark by which the wisdom of man may be measured, it is likely the realization that one knows very little indeed. Speculation about anything is almost always folly, and speculation that would presume to go beyond what the Holy Spirit of God has revealed to humankind is among all other human endeavors the folly of follies. Scriptures are, to use your terminology, "willing to tell us" ALL that God is willing to reveal about Himself. And all, I submit to you, that we need to know in order to be reborn in Christ. Hence, I have no patience with speculators, whoever they may be, because the wisdom of the world's wisest mortals is not going to add one jot or tittle of knowledge about God. Better by far to rejoice and give thanks to Him for revealing the precious truths that He has revealed than to struggle with questions the answers to which God has chosen to reserve within His province alone. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts" (Isaiah 55:8,9). ..... Being a Calvinist doesn't answer all questions. Being an Arminian doesn't answer them either. In short, there is no theological (including soteriological) system that can answer certain questions of predestination and election; and anyone who claims to know the answers is traveling in deep and turbulent waters well outside the limits of his mortal tether. It does me a world of good to keep my focus clear on who I am and who God is by reading the concluding chapters of Job, beginning at Chapter 37. ..... So, in keeping with the guideliness of SBF, let's try to keep away from speculation. It edifies no one. --Hank

238 | how do we benefit from serving in church | Acts 2:42 | Hank | 187231
sara - Your question may draw more expansive answers than what I'm going to give you, but I don't know of one that is more succinct and to the point than that drawn from Scripture itself. In this case my text is Acts 2:42 wherein Luke writes of the early church, "They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." ...... Let's now look at these four things one at a time. ....... (1) The apostles' teaching. This means the inspired teachings of the apostles, delivered orally at first, and now preserved in the New Testament. Persevering in the apostles' doctrine was one of the first religious exercises of the New Testament church after Pentecost, and a survey of of Acts and the Pauline letters leads one to draw a strong inference that it was of paramount importance. Doctrinal purity was essential to a New Testament church in apostolic times and it is no less essential in ours. ....... (2) Fellowship. One of the evidences of regeneration has always been the regenerate believer's desire to be with the people of God and share things in common with them. There was then and is still a sense of being separated from the world as a worshiper in the house of God in the company of the redeemed. Those who attach so little importance to worshiping, working and serving within the church among other believers are running counter to the example of the early church that Luke gives us in this passage from Acts. .......(3) The breaking of bread. This phrase in this context can be in reference to nothing else but the celebration of the Lord's Supper, one of two ordinances of the church (the other is believer's baptism). ....... (4) Prayers. This was the fourth principal practice of the early church. "The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" and Scripture teaches the Lord's people to pray, privately and corporately. Given the emphasis that our Lord, first of all, then Paul and the other apostles, placed upon prayer, it is fairly certain that the church of antiquity that zealously followed "the apostles' doctrine" was a church that spent much time in prayer. ...... In this post I've attempted to answer at least one aspect of your question by listing in order those four practices set down by Luke that were common to the early church of Christ. Though it's true, sad to say, that these practices have not always been adhered to by all who profess to be Christian. Not everyone pays heed to that segment of "the apostles' doctrine" that says to preach the word or to the warning about the time when some people will no longer endure sound doctrine. (See 2 Timothy 4:2-5). ...... One final comment regarding the phrasing of your question. In contemplation of God's amazing grace and holiness, should our sole aim not be to enter into God's house in a spirit of worship, praise and thanksgiving to Him who gave His only Son that we, believing on Him, should not perish but have eternal life? Shouldn't this be our one desire and purpose as we enter into God's house? And not therefore to ask, or be motivated by a consideration of, how WE benefit when we serve in God's house? --Hank

Hi, jdv - Sure, you can label yourself an apostle if you like -- or even a space cadet -- and so can I, but that doesn't make us apostles or space cadets, does it? ..... Teachings of the Restoration movement have no firm basis in Scripture. To read what restorationism teaches and see its errors exposed by the truth of Scripture, go to: http://www.gotquestions.org/Restoration.movement.html ..... I believe this scripturally sound link will prove enlightening to you and perhaps to some of the other readers of the Forum as well. --Hank
