Hi, Joe... Our Lord said, "He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him." (John 14:21 NASB) I believe I read somewhere that Christ Himself asserted (or reasserted) something over 250 commands in the gospels. However, one would not want to limit it to just His explicit commands, since all Scripture is His Word. How about if you work through something like the Sermon on the Mount, looking at each imperative statement, after working out who is being addressed. Obviously, any command that is failed to be obeyed, would be considered a sin -- although sin itself is more than just a matter of commission and omission. One other issue to avoid is that a list of commands will be a suitable checklist of behavior. Commands are rooted in doctrine. Theologians speak of indicatives (doctrine) versus imperatives (practice). It is in our nature to try to try to do the right things without understanding the right truth. We are all pharisaical at heart. The proper practices, however, if they do not arise from the proper doctrine, are frequently as much of a problem as the wrong practices in the first place. Nonetheless, we do not have to dig too deeply to surface our own sinfulness. For that end, all we have to do is look at the "great commandment" from Matthew 22:37-40. In Him, Doc |

29 | Ecumenical Movement Avoid or Not? | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 239750
I like what our late, brother kalos once said on the forum: "They do not have a good working knowledge of Scripture. Much tradition and ritual has crept into their worship. For many of them their religion doesn't appear to ever have been internalized. Religion to them is to speak Christian jargon, say the right things, attend services regularly to keep up appearances, and many other such things. I have met many of them whose religion has made little if any difference in the way they live. Many of them believe their church is the only one that has the truth, that they are the only ones who are going to heaven. They idolize one or more leaders whose every word they blindly accept. Also, on the one hand they believe that if you die with one unconfessed sin on your soul you are bound for hell. On the other hand they believe that if you just say the right words and ask for forgiveness, don't worry about it. As a result they have a casual attitude toward sin in their lives. Am I talking about Catholics [Roman Catholics]? No, I am not!" |

31 | How did hew go from individual | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 239889
Hi, Roberto... Welcome to the forum! That is a very good question! Actually, there is always and ever has been only two possibilities for the debt we owe: we can pay it or Christ can pay it. This is part of the eternal purpose of God (Ephesians 1:11). Plans that He formed from the foundations of the earth and carried out in perfect faithfulness (Isaiah 25:1); specifically to capacitate His own to behold His glory. Christ stated in His prayer on the night of His betrayal: "Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world." (John 17:24 NASB) So the answer to how did we get there? God did it! In Him, Doc |

Hello, criderherb... Welcome to the forum! Yes, I believe that the two terms are synonymous. I cannot cite for you a Bible verse at this moment. However, Sam Storms has a very good outline with Scripture annotations: http://www.samstorms.com/all-articles/post/demons Perhaps that will be of help to you. In Him, Doc |

34 | "the ages before us" How many were there | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 239936
Hi, Mr. Jay... Relative to Ecclesiastes 1:10-11, the word "ages" here is associated with the thought that there is "nothing new under the sun" (v9b). Ages in this context is pretty much what we mean in English when we say "ages and ages ago." In other words, time immemorial. Consequently, there is nothing in this passage in the sense of particular epochs of time. In Him, Doc |

35 | Eccl. 1. Is vs.11 referring to vs. 10? | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 239938
Dear Mr. Jay, Yes, I should think that verses 9 through 11 are a single pericope; i.e., these verses together form a single coherent thought. In Him, Doc |

36 | Can "before us" mean before Adam? | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 239940
Hi, Mr. Jay... I probably was not as clear as I might have been: Solomon was not using the word "age" as a particular unit of time. Rather he intended it to be read as "time immemorial" or "way back before anyone remembers." In other words, old things are thought to be new because human beings (individually and as a group) do not have long memories or they simply are ignorant of what went on a long time ago. I do not think there is any possibility that Solomon was talking about before man. That would be contrary to the point he is making. In Him, Doc |

Hi, Brobers1... Welcome to the forum! There are answers of ethical, moral, pedagogic, or practical nature. I have found that when young people start with "What is wrong with" that they are usually not interested in being fully informed, but are seeking to be justified in a course of action they want to make or, more often, in a course of action they have already taken. Therefore, I would ask you in return, what kind of answer do you seek? In Him, Doc |

Hi, Bill... Welcome to the forum! Just a cursory check into the fellow: I am uncomfortable with someone who simply describes himself as "conservative" but gives is not providing any other explanation of his doctrinal foundations. There is just so much prophecy mongering going on out there. By scanning a number of pages I suspect that his presuppositions would surface. I might look into what he had to say if someone gave me one of his books. I would not spend any further time or money on it though. In Him, Doc |

40 | mercy by the bible in everyday life | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 239991
Dear ott, I would start by understanding all that the bible has to say about mercy. Lookup every use of it. Read and make notes on each verse and its context. Once you feel you have a solid grasp on how it is used in Scripture, only then begin to derive how it might be applied. Application always grows out of doctrine. In Him, Doc |
