21 | The Suffering of the Church | Acts 8:2 | strts5 | 217588
That is interesting Theology, I don't know that I buy it. I believe God can turn any situation into Glory for Himself, but I can't seem to find any scripture where God uses suffering to lead us. He uses His Holy Spirit to lead and I don't know that there is any suffering in the Holy Spirit. In the O.T. there was suffering as a result of sin, and God did teach His people through suffering, but suffering was not His tool for teaching or inspiring. Suffering in ALL forms is EVIL and SATANIC. It is the opposite of the Kingdom of Heaven. There is Heb 5:8 but I don't think you can argue Christ suffered until the cross, and I don't believe that was a learning experience. In Him, Mike |

22 | The Suffering of the Church | Acts 8:2 | strts5 | 217612
Hi all, Let me clarify. When this dispensation is over and we enter into eternity with Christ will there be any suffering? Why not? There is suffering in this life as a result of a fallen world, and we as Christians must endure it. The difference between a Christian and non-Christian, we both endure suffering, only God strengthens the Christian through suffering. Do we learn from suffering and grow stronger in our faith if we persevere, absolutely. The statement I was making is that the suffering is not from God. Suffering is already in this world, God allows us go through suffering, but suffering in itself is a byproduct of sin and death and that is not from God. As Christians we are supposed to triumph over suffering and learn patience that God will make us victorious over it. So, I will stand by my statement, ALL SUFFERING IS EVIL!!! ISAIAH 48:10 NKJ 10 Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. JAMES 1:2-3 NKJ 2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. |

CDBJ, If God calls you to China to be a missionary and while there you are arrested, sent to labor prison and die, you will be rewarded in Heaven for your suffering. Was the suffering good or evil? The suffering was evil! God is rewarding you for the evil you endured for His name sake and counting it as good. Suffering is the physical manifestation of evil! I don't understand how very educated people can be so confused about a very simple concept. In love Mike |

Everyone, All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. I am teachable, and I feel I have misspoke. There is discipline from God which may seem to be suffering while it lasts. I think I could take the conversation into semantics and say there would be no discipline without sin (evil) but while in this life both will continue. I made a blanket statement and I will concede and accept correction. In Him, Mike |

This is just a side note, but I'm confused with the whole "intelligent design" thing. It kind of 'feels' like compromise, or perhaps I'm just to naive and believe God really did do it in 6 (or 7) days. To me when I see the science it just makes God that much bigger. Whatever ;/ Mike R |

27 | 1 Timothy 6:3 | 1 Cor 9:19 | strts5 | 218246
Thank you Doc and Steve, So, is Lectio Divina, a minor focus of this church, a cause enough to leave a church. I know my pastor still has a grounded belief in Scripture. We also have an extremely high percentage of people involved in ministry (social justice issues mostly). I feel I have done a good job of narrowing down the issues and not attacking an entire ministry (I haven't done anything yet), but I want to make sure these issues are serious enough to warrant action or am I making too big a deal about it. I don't want to be someone who attacks every ministry because of minor faults, they all have their faults. In Love, Mike |

Thank you all, Thank you for the encouragement. I know I am making the right decision, but it doesn't make it an easy one, almost eight years fellowshiping with them. Please pray that I will make the right decision and Christ will lead me to where He wants me. In Him Mike |

29 | 1 Timothy 6:3 | 1 Cor 9:19 | strts5 | 218352
To everyone here, An update. I followed everyone's advice (mostly, if I left without talking with him, my phone would start ringing). I spoke with my old pastor privately and told him of my decision to leave his church. It was a very emotional conversation, he has been through some very difficult times with me and I love him very much. He corrected me on some of my false idea's about his teachings, but in the end he stands by some teachings and authors who I could not in good conscience support. In the end I told him I am leaving his church and would no longer be under his authority as my pastor which he accepted graciously. Please keep me in your prayers that God will show me to where He wants me and I can be used according to God's will. In Him Mike R |

1 Cor 14:2 It is an unknown language only speaking to God. How could that mean some other known language. I don't think God would give me gift of speaking French to only speak to Him. That makes no sense!

Actually the context of verse 2 is verse 4. We are not ministering a spiritual gift to God, but edifying ourselves, I'm sure we are all in need of this. I also read V2 in Young's Literal Translation, Darby Translation, NASB, NIV, Amplified, and KJV. I'm thinking some translator somewhere would have caught there mistake. I also checked EVERY commentary I could find (Darby, Geneva, Gill, Jamieson Faussett Brown, Johnson, Matthew Henry, Matthew Henry Concise and Wesley) and none mentions V2 as referring to "a god" as opposed to speaking to God. I think at least one of the commentaries would have mentioned this. Can you help me to find where you arrived at your translation? I have read many of your posts in the past and I love your knowledge of the Word, but here I just can't agree with you. Vines (2) without (i.e., as an anarthrous noun). "The English may or may not have need of the article in translation. But that point cuts no figure in the Greek idiom. Thus in Act 27:23 ('the God whose I am,' RV) the article points out the special God whose Paul is, and is to be preserved in English. In the very next verse (ho theos) we in English do not need the articles" (A. T. Robertson, Gram. of Greek, NT, p. 758). As to this latter it is usual to employ the article with a proper name, when mentioned a second time. There are, of course, exceptions to this, as when the absence of the article serves to lay stress upon, or give precision to, the character or nature of what is expressed in the noun. A notable instance of this is in Jhn 1:1, "and the Word was God;" here a double stress is on theos, by the absence of the article and by the emphatic position. To translate it literally, "a god was the Word," is entirely misleading. Moreover, that "the Word" is the subject of the sentence, exemplifies the rule that the subject is to be determined by its having the article when the predicate is anarthrous (without the article). In Rom 7:22, in the phrase "the law of God," both nouns have the article; in ver. 25, neither has the article. This is in accordance with a general rule that if two nouns are united by the genitive case (the "of" case), either both have the article, or both are without. Here, in the first instance, both nouns, "God" and "the law" are definite, whereas in ver. 25 the word "God" is not simply titular; the absence of the article stresses His character as lawgiver |

Dear Beja, Thank you, what I was implying is that the translators also understood this and every time translated it as "God" and not "god". Mike |

NASB 2For one who (E)speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks (F)mysteries. 2b ... no one understands... "I also do not believe that you will find in scripture anywhere that "glossa" referring to the gift is ever used to reference an "unknown language" (i.e. as if unknown to mankind). If it is please point it out for me :-) " If no one understands, I think it safe to say it is unknown. no one knows and unknown are interchangeable. I don't want to poke at you here, so please don't take it that way, but... " It may be that those of the Corinthian church might not have "known" the tongue". Why would God give me the supernatural gift of speaking in French if nobody in the room speaks French? It just doesn't make sense. I'm not sure where your going with that line of thought. In Love, Mike |

I completely agree, that is a completely legitimate gift of tongues. I do not agree that is the only gift tongues. Look up 1 Cor 12:10. The last part of that verse it says interpretation of tongues. Where one gift of tongues is to minister to people who speak a language other than your own, the other is to interpret or as some call it edification of the body. The last thing I will add is my own personal experience. If I am in a church which believes and allows the Holy Spirit to minister in this fashion I will sometimes know when someone is about to give a prophesy several minutes beforehand. Sometimes I will know beforehand what will be said, I believe this is the Holy Spirit bearing witness that it is valid (1 Cor 14:29). It is always scriptural, edifying and positive. I sometimes feel as though I am the one who is supposed to speak although I am to scared to, I think I should get over it. I have gotten up to speak and someone else starts speaking first and so I sit back down. This is all perfectly described in 1 Cor 14:27-33. Paul goes so far as to give very precise instructions on how it should occur. There are many who have seen people attempt to imitate these wonderful gifts and many have been hurt by this which makes me sad that so many should choose not to receive some of the wonderful gifts God has given the Church because of very few. I attempt to be sensitive to those who do not believe, so I usually pray and worship in the Spirit quietly so as not to offend. My only purpose for writing this is to testify of my personal experience of 1 Cor 14. There are real gifts of various tongues and there are those who counterfeit. Please do not throw away Gods gifts because of man. In Love Mike |

Here is a general rosponce to the last couple. It is NEVER a new revelation of scripture. I appologize, but I was only attempting to relate how my experience aligned with scripture and how I have seen God's word experienced in my life! Also, the gifts (or gift) is not mine, it is for the Church, for its edification, exortation and conmfort. It is the Holy Spirit speaking the Living Word (Christ) through a man (prophet) to His people. It is nothing new. Sometimes a prophesy will confirm through the Word the message a pastor is about to preach on. Paul even said when he preached it was accompanied by miracles signs and wonders. These are not new revelations, they confirm God's word ONLY! Perhaps you don't believe it important for God to confirm His word, but this is the example all throughout scripture, what makes you think He would stop confirming His Word? In Love Mike |

Speaking in tongues is not my focus, it is just a small piece of my life as a follower of Christ and the topic of this discussion. It also happens to be a gift I have recieved from God and a passion. It is a tool, one of many God uses for His Glory. It is not the main focus of my life, and I am fully capable serving God without it. I do however cherish every gift God has given me including speaking in tongues. I look at it this way, God gave us many tools to glorify Him, spread his Word and to lead people to Him. It's like I have a toolbox, sometimes the job calls for a hammer, sometimes for a screwdriver. It's just a tool in the toolbox. Some people choose to beat in a nail with the butt of a screwdriver, I'll use the hammer! In Love Mike |

John, That is funny! I should have clarified tongues plus interpretation or prophessy, sorry if that wasn't clear. I have seen plenty of nuts, there are LOTS of them, in fact I have acted like a nut in the past, but I grew up and matured. To clarify interpretation on tongues and prophessy only point to the cross of Jesus Christ. That is the litmus test, if Christ is not glorified it is a fraud, and I have heard my share of this. It is very sad. In Love, Mike |

I absolutely agree with Acts 2:38. It is not necessary to be saved or to receive the Holy Spirit! Luke 24:49 "And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high." John 1:33 "I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, 'He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.' John 14:16 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; John 15:26 "When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, John 16:7 "But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. John 16:13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. Acts 2:33 "Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. 1 John 2:27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him. There is no pre-requisite to receive the Holy Spirit other than to believe on Christ Jesus! And NOWHERE is it ever a requirement to speak in tongues of any kind! In Love, Mike p.s. I apologize, I think many of us took this topic off on our own and did not answer the original question. |

Thank you, I was trying to find a way to edit that, I wish we could add that function to our own posts. allow me to refrase. It is not necessary to speak in tongues to be saved or to receive the Holy spirit! Receiving the Holy Spirit is automatic upon receiving Christ as our Savior. Acts 2:38-39 38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call." |
