Yes, absolutely. I am not sure if they were so much worse than some other nations as object lessons. Notice, that the Sumerians of Noah's time, the Sodomites of Abe's time and the Amorites of Moses' time were all wiped out. I am not sure if it was for different reasons. Oppression of the poor seems to be involved with all three. The ?Amelikites were also wiped out, but that seems to be a clear different reason. Greentwiga |

Did you know that this site allows you to write a small personal profile? I have one, if you need some counsel. I won't say things to tickle your ears, that is things that you want to hear, if they are against scripture. Though I had to spend 10 years single, I have been truly blessed with a Godly woman this time. God gives great joy to those who wait on his will and timing. As for your pastor, people who truly listen to the word will say similar things. greentwiga |

26 | What are our duties as man and wife | Eph 5:1 | greentwiga | 142075
Whew, such a lot to say. First, are you a child of God? I know you are. Does he love you even more than you love your owhn family? Is he giving you the best, and teaching you? Absolutely. Therefore relax. Sometimes when thisngs were tough, I had to repeat words like this as a mantra. It helps me overcome self doubt. We can help each other understand, but each has a choice. You can choose to listen to God, or your own selfish interests. We know the truth, but blind ourselves. See Rom 12:1-2 on how when we give ourselves to God, we know his will. Here you instinctively knew that though the church needs discipline, just like in II Cor, being too harsh can destroy a mans walk with God. I had a daughter who dropped out of High school. She knew that I disapproved of whet she was doing. Nevertheless, I kept contacting her and loving her. She is now in college. Keep believing in that new creation that you are. God don't make no junk. In answering your questions, we must look at what is usually ignored. Does God give cultural or time period statements in the passage. For example, Paul says tht because of the times (the persecution) that people should not marry. Another time he says that he wishes that all men were like him. This could mean he naturally had a low sex drive, or that he had the victory over needing sex. Compare those statements to the one about every man should marry. All statements have to be true, so I Cor 7:2 can't be strictly interpreted as all men must marry. In 1 Cor 7:9, we compare that to Matt 5:28 where burning in lust is adultery in the mind. Yes, it is better to be single in times of trouble, but it is better to marry that to burn, or worse, committ immorality. Remember, back then, there were people teaching that marriage was evil. We must reject all such worldly things. Paul saying, relax. Single is good, marriage is good. It does not say "If ones mate deserts him". It says if an unbeliever leaves. Let's say you are emotionally abusive (I know you are not) and your husband realizes he will commit suicide if he doesn't leave. He, a believing Christian leaves to save his life, but stays single and prays for you. You though claim righteousness, because you always blame others rather than listen to God and repent. You claim abandonment and remarry. God is not fooled by such people, but it goes on all the time. If the unbeliever can't stand the new righteous you that no longer joins him in the "gentile" ways and leaves, you are free to remarry. Notice the difference the spouse leaves because of your sin or because of your righteousness. Only the second frees you to remarry. I believe that Paul's and Jesus' teachings on Marriage perfectly mesh. Adultery breaks the marriage contract. There is no marriage, unless you choose to forgive. Thus you can divorce. The unbeliever is not under God's law in the way that the jew or Christian is. You must keep your covenants because God demands it. If an unbeliever leaves, the covenant is broken, but if he chooses to stay, do like Paul says and stay. In both cases, the Christian stays if at all possible, but if the partner ends the marriage in these situations, you are free to remarry. I see no contridiction. You had the heart to stay. Compare the sentance structure of loosed to widows. One is no longer under bondage but free to remarry. The other is loosed and free to remarry. the sentances are identical with two words of similar ideas used. Compare Ephesians and Colossians. Two identical books, but the passages are written with the same construction but different words. Thus, if widows are free to remarry (and they are) then when unbelievers leave, the spouse is free to remarry. Greentwiga |

You are so sweet. They way I look at what you say is that there are many applications. God shows us things that help us to see what to do. When you read the chapter on marriage in 1 Cor 7, you might need a different application, though we read exactly the same words. Is that what you were saying? Greentwiga |

Now, I hate porn with a passion. But, It is not fornication. If it was, the woman would be married to him without knowing it. Remember the passage where one who goes to a prostitute is one flesh with her? Jesus, though, did make a point in Matt 5:28 A man who looks at a woman lustfully (porn is included) has comitted adultery with her in his heart. Not physically, so no grounds for divorce and remarriage (not maritial unfaithfulness a couple of verses later), but his sin in God's eyes is just as bad. Notice, I am trying to walk a careful line. I hold marriage as sacred, I want people in danger to be able to leave, and I want to guard against easy justification of divorce. Many people don't want to get healed. They would rather blame the other, even manipulate them into a hard place to feel justified in getting divorce. Thus I do not want to say just looking at porn sites would be grounds for divorce. 29 | What are our duties as man and wife | Eph 5:1 | greentwiga | 142060
That long two letter response covers those things. It is a study that came out of my divorce. To sum it up, being widowed, adultery in the spouse, and a nonbeliever choosing to leave is the only grounds for divorce and being free to remarry. Physical Abuse, Emotional destruction, withdrawl of sex, and drugs have all been stated as giving a person the freedom to divorce and remarry. When my apparently believing spouse chose to leave, I had a terrible battle. I had a high sex drive and God said you must stay single. The verse is 1 Cor 10-11. If you need to get divorced, you must remain unmarried of get reconciled. I had to stay single. I cried, I prayed, I hurt, and God said, My grace is sufficient. Then she committed adultery, and I was free to remarry. I slowly looked, and finally 10 years after the divorce (9 after the adultery) I found a pearl of great price and married her. Read both halves carefully, and you should find a complete analysis of each divorce verse. needless to say, Physical or emotional abuse, or severe alcoholism that interferes with the ability to financially take care of the children is grounds to get divorced and stay single only. If you remarried without meeting the Biblical standards, divorce the new spouse to remarry the old, one disobeys the old Testament that forbids one to remarry the old spouse. Ask forgiveness and move on. Stay married to the new spouse. Your loving brother in Christ greentwiga |

30 | Where did the Book of Mormons come from? | Bible general Archive 2 | greentwiga | 142047
I was quoting my friend and what I had heard about 1977. I had not quoted this site. I just found it when you challenged me. Thanks for updating my facts. I thought the infor was correct, but it had been changed (the handwriting) after I heard it. Since then, I have more focused on eastern religions to witness to them, and haven't kept up to date on Mormons. Greentwiga |

This must have been the source of what I heard: http://www.lightplanet.com/mormons/response/qa/spaulding.htm Nevertheless, some have continued to promote the Spaulding theory (e.g., see Holley). In 1977, graphologists claimed to have detected similarities between the handwriting of Spaulding and of one of the scribes who transcribed some of the Book of Mormon from Joseph Smith's dictation. After considerable media attention and further scrutiny, anti-Mormon spokespersons acknowledged that they had been too hasty. The handwriting evidence did not support a connection between Solomon Spaulding and Joseph Smith. The Question was, did they change their mind because of heavy pressure from the Mormons, to be politically correct, or because they had made a real mistake? The site also says: Hurlbut set out in the ensuing months to refute Joseph Smith´s claims for the origins of the Book of Mormon. He interviewed members of Spaulding´s family, who swore that there were precise similarities between Spaulding´s work and the Book of Mormon. If the family members swore then that there were the similarities, they would have passed the information down. If you hear the story from a dear trusted family member and a different one from the newspaper, which would you believe? I would believe the parent or grandparent. I don't think that contacting the family member would add anything. If you still want, email me. Greentwiga |

32 | Why is NAS better than KJV | Bible general Archive 2 | greentwiga | 141962
Wow! I was in Kenya Africa, working with Hindus and Muslims for only three years. Like you, I tend to avoid the commentaries and search for myself. A good study Bible with cross references is essential to me. I am using the NIV, but it is getting worn out. Know a good way to get it rebound in leather? I once had a NASB rebound by a monk. I am thinking about returning to the NASB. The updated version sounds great. I have strongs and the NIV exhaustive concordances. Otherwise, I am a voracious reader of the ancient cultures. This keeps my interpretations fitting the Bible and ancient societies. (eg. Gen 6 - sons of God marrying daughters of men.) I am just getting into some internet Bible resources, especially ones that look up phrases instead of just words. I used to own a greek english interlinear, but it was left in Kenya.

I don't remember how much of the original was left. I can't remember if it was Dr. Martin or another researcher on cults that did the research on handwriting. What was fascinating was meeting a Dr. Spaulding and working with him and hearing the family story directly. Some Joseph Smith just wrote directly, as need arose. I would imagine that Dr. Spaulding and Joseph Smith would have both quoted from the King James. Thanks for reminding me about Dr. Martin's Book, it has been so long since I read it. Greentwiga |

What info besides what I had already put would you like to see? For years, I used the Nasb study Bible. It got me through Bible school and Mission work. Later, I switched (for some forgotten reason) to NIV and enjoyed it. Though it is not as word for word as NASB, with a concordance, I have done great Bible Studies. I was following information of Greek teachers when I said the old ASB was more literal than the NASB. I am willing to be wrong, though. Have you looked at Young's literal? It was written in the 1800, so the language is old, but it still seems to follow the Hebrew and Greek better than either the old ASB or the NASB. I have stumbled across a couple of other literals, but haven't looked at them. Though I personally would not use the Living Bible, I see why some do. The point is that people are without excuse to read the Bible, just as you said. One site I saw had the KJV and the NASB, both with the Strong's numbers for each word next to the word. At the rate I have been studying the book of Genesis, I seem to need that. Intense studying of the Hebrew has led me to some unique insights on some of the stories. One just has to believe each and every word and try to put them together so every word makes sense. greentwiga |

True, I missed that totally. It is easy to just say God and let it go. So much of the law seems something people would develop logically. Thou shalt not murder seems like something that all societies would develop. In Romans, Paul talks about the facets that are obvious for all to see. this indicates that man would acquire some by logic and experience. Greentwiga |

Very good. It is smart to watch for people choosing the most awkward interpretation and then complaining about the Bible. We are warned about such people in books like the pastoral epistles Greentwiga |

We do know that Adam knew about evil, which had a specific meaning. Noah saw that his generation was condemned for evil, wickedness, corruption and violence. There were some other pieces of information, such as one man one woman marriage, and the man was the head of the house. Noah knew about clean and unclean animals. I am sure one can find more in Genesis. The other cultures that you refer to such as the laws of Hamurabi and laws before him can add to this picture.
