21 | what is the cup | Bible general Archive 2 | following him | 130016
Welcome to the forum Grandma Dee; In this case the cup is refering to the coming events of His arrest, trial and execution upon the cross. He knew this was the plan of God for the redemption of man. It was even for Christ a difficult thing to face this type of death yet He did so willingly as shown by His desire that the Father's will be done not His. The cup might be comparred to fate. Youv'e heard the term "the cup of life" (not refering to spiritual things) refering to things in this life that we experience. That is how I understand it. Maybe someone else on the forum can explain it better. Blessing to you Aaron |

22 | Does asking in His name ever work? | John 14:13 | following him | 130012
Emmaus and Karen are very correct. Jesus is not some genie that you pray three time and the answers comes. It realy is based on relationship John 15:7 "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you." As you grow in you relationship with Christ you learn more and more how to pray according to His will. 1 John 5:14 "This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us." And answers come at least we begin to recognize the answers when they come.
23 | How do you know the Bible is the word of | 2 Tim 3:16 | following him | 129725
Hello Cariad; Certainly there is an aspect of faith that is involved in believing that the Bible is the word of God. However Paul writes in Romans that our faith is not a blind faith: Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. This verse tells us that there is outside evidence (other than just because the Bible says so) that points to and declares that God is. The Bible as His writen word is backed up by plenty of evidence as well. I would suggest you invest in a book called "Evidence That Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell. It has been many years since I've read it so there have probably been many updates of it. It is full of solid historical, literary, and philosophical reasons to believe that the Bible is the Word of God. Blessings to you Aaron |

24 | What is God's major attribute? | Bible general Archive 2 | following him | 129568
Hello tgbishop: I would say that God’s major attribute is His sovereignty. It is upon this that I believe everything else rests. He will judge the nations by the standard of His holiness but it is His sovereignty that gives Him the right to judge in the first place. It is by His sovereignty that He has the right and ability to set up His holiness as the standard. Read the book of Job; it is a perfect example of the sovereignty of God and the fact that He extends mercy to who He wishes i.e Job and judges whom He wishes i.e. Job’s friends. It is by His sovereignty that He is able to say that salvation is through no other name but Jesus. It is by His sovereignty that He set all of creation in motion. We appeal to God for justice or help or strength based upon His ability to give it. We can have confidence to come to Him knowing that He can deliver us and that He desires to do so. Blessing to you Aaron |

25 | guiding principles to Revelation | Revelation | following him | 129338
I believe the most foundational principle for understanding the book of Revelation is found in the first verse. It is the revelation of Jesus Christ. Revelation means unveiling. So to understand the book, look to see how Jesus is revealed. We often focus our attention on the side issues of the coming beasts, the judgements etc. but it all comes down to Jesus Christ being revealed.
26 | Apocrypha or Dead Sea Scrolls Helpful? | Rom 9:13 | following him | 128449
Greetings Ted546: I hope I dont add more confusion to the subject and I dont know if you have considered this or not, but in searching into this matter myself years ago I realised that the key (for my limited understanding of the matter) that helped me was the realisation that God's predestination come after His foreknowledge. Rom 8:29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; Rom 8:30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. Hope this helps and not hinders Grace and mercy to you |

27 | Explain the mark in Rev 13 | Rev 13:15 | following him | 128442
Greetings oldeek: I would agree mostly with what EdB says. Receiving mark on our bodies is becoming so common that we wouldn't think twice about putting another one on. And it will not be something that sneeks up on us. The mark has to be some physical thing. It may not be a tatoo though. It may be a micro-chip implanted under the skin there are many who believe this; Although I see it only as a possiblity. The main thing is that it is something physical (I have heard one theory that it is realy only a spiritual thing) because without it you will not be able to buy or sell anything. So it needs to be something that can be verified that you have. It will be something that the beast initiates as possibly a special decree that the government impliments. Many numbers represent things scripturally 3 represent the triune God 7 represent completeness 12 probable represents something although I dont know what it is but there are 12 tribes of Israel, 12 desciples, etc 6 represents man. 666 is the number of the beast and like EdB said there are many theories as to who this number represents. It almost seems you can make any name come out to be 666 depending on how you do the math. In order to really get a better idea of who this will be (Although all ideas will probably be guesses until he actually shows up) you must look at all the other descriptions of him in the Bible and take it all together. Oh by the way there is a partial physical description of him in the Old Testament. Grace and mercy to you |

29 | OT 12 Tribes different 2 12 Tribes in NT | Rev 7:4 | following him | 128253
Hello G sus: If you look throughout the OT (Old Testament) that there were several instances of tribe shuffling to come up with 12 tribes. If you didn't want to include Levi in the accounting then you include the two sons of Josephs but not Joseph. If you wanted to include Levi then instead of counting the two sons of Joseph you count Joseph himself. In this case I don't know why Dan is not included but the idea is that the twelve tribes Israel are involved and that the entire nation of Israel is represented by the twelve tribes. |

30 | Should Women Pastor Churches or Preach | Bible general Archive 2 | following him | 128076
This question has been discussed at length in other streams. Do a search on women pastors and I'm sure you'll find views from all sides of this issue. Regarding them preaching in the pulpit of any church. No one male or female whether they be a pastor or not would be allowed to preach or teach in the church I belong to unless they were well known and docternally(?) sound and of good reputation in morals and ethics. Position in the church: I would say that would be up to the particular church which ever side of the issue they fall on. New Testament: When does the NT become non applicable to today? 200AD, 600AD, 900AD, 1200AD, 1800AD, 2000AD? If one part of it is not applicable for today who is to say any of it is? |

32 | Staying together before marriage. | 1 Cor 8:9 | following him | 127977
Here are three scriptures for you to think about. This one deals with our reputation to those who will examine our lives to see if we realy follow Christ or not. 1 Tim 3:7 And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. This one is along the same lines as to what kind of witness we have but not just to unbelievers but to our brothers and sisters in Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from every form of evil. (NKJV) This one shows what could happen if what we do is seen by those brothers and sisters who may not have the strength we do to resist temptation. But what we do may give them an excuss to do it to. And then they fall. It may not cause the two of you to stumble but while it cause someone else to? Rom 14:21 It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles. 1 Cor 8:9 But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. This is what Jesus says about stumbling someone. Luke 17:1 He said to His disciples, "It is inevitable that stumbling blocks come, but woe to him through whom they come! Your question leads me to believe that the Holy Spirit is already convicting you about it. I would have to say yes you are wrong in thinking this for the above reasons and for the reason that you are putting yourself and your girl friend in a place where it would be very easy to slip. It would be better if you would show her that you will do what it takes to protect her even from the possiblity of falling to the temptation and hurting her in that way. Show her that you will respect and honor her by avoiding these situations. It will go along way in building trust between the two of you. |

33 | "All things belong to you" means what? | 1 Cor 3:21 | following him | 127780
Sir Pent; This is how I view this scripture: In the beginning of the chapter Paul is dealing with a division in the church as to who was whose disciple "I am of Apollos", and "I am of Paul" the division was to such an extent that those of Paul would not receive Apollos and those of Apollos would not receive Paul. But Paul says that he and Apollos are fellow servants of the Lord. Paul planted, Apollos watered but God was the one who caused the growth. He then explains that Christ was the foundation and He and Apollos were both trying to build on that foundation and that they had to be careful how and with what they built. But the crux of the matter was that those "of Paul" were not allowing Apollos to contribute to their growth and those "of Apollos" were not allowing Paul to contribute. This is where he begins to tell them that He and Apollos and Cephas belong to them and should be allowed to contribute to their growth. If they restrict one or the other from contributing they lose out. The all things in this case would be refering to that which the Lord provides for their growth and establishment as the temple of God. The thing to be careful of is whether those who are contributing are contributing gold, silver precious stone or wood, hay or stuble. In the next chapter we see his admission that those that build or contribute need to be found as faithful stewards ie trustworthy. He also goes on to say in the next chapter that it is a small thing for him to be judged by them refering to those "of Apollos" who would not allow him to contribute to their growth. God would in the end would judge his work. Grace to you |

35 | Gen, 1:1-3 Gap theorythe fall?? | Gen 1:1 | following him | 125711
Hello Me; I agree with Hank. The ICR web site has a great deal of information that will shed light on this subject. Although I would like to share something here about the Gen 1:1. Consider the background of the book. although some may disagree but I do believe that Moses was the author. He was leading Israel out from a nation that worshipped idols into a land where the people worshipped idols so it is not surprising that the first sentance of this book is that God created the heavens and the Earth. Not Ra or Molech, or Baal or any of the other false gods. It was their God. Elohim. this first sentance is a statement of fact not a record of earth history. |

38 | Is the word of God referred to as oil? | Bible general Archive 2 | following him | 123467
I have not found any in the quick seach that I did. However that does not mean there is not one. But oil is generally a symbol of the Holy Spirit. I can follow up with lots of references to that if you want those. Is there some specific reason you are looking for this? If you could explain why you are looking for this it may be easier to help find something that would help you. God Bless |

39 | what is the simple gospel? | Mark 16:15 | following him | 123416
The word gospel means "good news" what is the good news? That God has made "A" way for us to get back to Him. Unfortunately that is also why it is difficult for most to accept. He made "A" way; singular, one, no other, And that is through Jesus Christ. John 14:6 Jesus *said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. This bring up any one of several hinderences people have 1. It involves repentance - who likes to admit they are wrong? Especially after a lifetime of doing things wrong. 2. It is absolute. People nowdays do not believe in absolutes therefore they cant accept that Jesus is the only way. 3. People feel so guilty they cant accept that they dont have to do something to get right with God. Meaning they think that they have to earn it. They cant believe it is a free gift from God. The very simplicity of the gospel; Jesus died for your sins so that you wouldn't have to yourself. and God did it just because He loves you. Is very hard for most to accept. In their minds it just has to be more complicated. |

40 | Connection between Daniel 9:11 and US? | Dan 9:11 | following him | 123315
Gak1; The context of this passage is of Daniel finding in the scriptures that the time of their captivity in Babylon was almost over and so he began seeking God for forgiveness for the past sins of the nation Isreal which God punished by send Israel into the captivity. The curse refers to the things God said He would do to Israel if they would not keep His statutes. |
