From the Song of Solomon.....I do not intend to put any particular interpretation on these verses, other than to note the PASSION that is so clearly expressed. Of course, this is love poetry, so imagery is not literal. LOVER: "You are a garden locked up, my sister, my bride; you are a spring enclosed, a sealed fountain." -- 4:12 BELOVED: "Let my lover come into his garden and taste its choice fruits." -- 4:16b LOVER: I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride; I have gathered my myrrh with my spice. I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey; I have drunk my wine and my milk." -- 5:1 BELOVED: My lover has gone down to his garden, to the beds of spices, to browse in the gardens and to gather lilies. I am my lover's and my lover is mine; he browses among the lilies. -- 6:2-3 Peace, Parable |

23 | Is not God inside of each of us? | Bible general Archive 1 | Parable | 89479
Perhaps the answer may be found in this: its not that we neglect personal insight or revelation, but rather that we seek to confirm they are truth by comparing them with Scripture, which we hold to be the ultimate authority on matters of faith and practice. I note that not all Christian traditions hold this "high view" of scripture, e.g. the Quakers. The risk of holding to your own revelation is that you risk being in error, or worse, being deceived. There is no doubt that we are called to follow where the Spirit leads, and this necessarily implies direct personal revelation and experience. |

24 | If Jesus became sin why is he in Heaven? | NT general Archive 1 | Parable | 46005
If I may add something to the excellent comments so far...when Christ died for us, He suffered not only physical death, but also spiritual death, i.e. separation from the Father. For the One who was so intimate with the Father as to call Him "Abba", this separation was more painful than we can possibly imagine. Also, from the Father's perspective, the loss of His only Son was infinitely real and infinitely grievous to Him. Because Christ's perfect sacrifice, made out of love for us, fulfilled the demands of justice on our behalf, the Father raised Christ from the ultimate death and glorified Him to confirm that the penalty for humanity was paid in full, all at once, for all.
25 | Time line when the world was Created | Genesis | Parable | 77641
As a Christian who is also a physcial scientist at a university, I summarize my thoughts on this topic, see below. My inspiration for the scientific side of this discussion comes from "The Genesis Question", by Dr. Hugh Ross. For previous posts by me on this topic, see the thread starting at message #46773, which can be found by using the Quick Search window on the upper right. Here's my interpretation of Genesis. I have shared this with one of my pastors at my church, and he has no objections to what I have said. I expect others on this forum will want to share their views as well. 1) God created Adam. Gen 2:7 God planted the Garden of Eden. Gen 2:8 Scripture does not say how long it was between the time of Adam's creation and his arrival in the Garden. 2) God created Eve in the Garden. Gen 2:22 Scripture does not say how long Adam lived before God created Eve. 3) Adam and Eve disobeyed God. Gen 3:6 Scripture does not say how long Adam and Eve lived in the Garden before they disobeyed God. 4) God walked in the Garden and Adam and Eve hid themselves from him. Gen 3:8-9 Scripture does not say how long it was after eating the apple that Adam and Eve hid themselves from God. 5) Because of the serpent's role and the disobedience of Adam and Eve, the world was cursed by God. Gen 3:14-19 The curse brought humanity: conflict with the serpent (Gen 3:15), pain (Gen 3:16), dominance of the husband over the wife (Gen 3:16), surviving on the meager fruits of painful toil (Gen 3:17), and death and decay (Gen 3:19). 6) The curse is contrasted sharply with the Garden, implying life in the Garden had none of the troubles of the Fallen world, most notably death and decay. As these are how we measure time, in both the cosmic and personal sense, our Fallen understanding of time is wholly inadequate to understanding time in the Garden, before the Fall. Peter alludes to God's view of time in 2Peter3:8b "... with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day." 7) Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden and entry was barred by cherubim and a flaming sword. Gen 3:23-24. 8) We are the decendents of Adam and Eve, Gen 3:20. We live in that same Fallen world and likewise cannot access the Garden in ANY way, including through the use of logic to infer anything about the timing of Creation or the nature of the Garden, as might be extrapolated by science after examination of the Fallen world. I conclude: Science is constrained to reveal the nature of the Fallen world only and cannot address it before the Fall in any way whatsoever. If the Fallen world appears by all scientific measures to be very old, that fact has no bearing on when Creation was established nor the nature of the Garden before the Fall. |

26 | King James bible only one to read? | Genesis | Parable | 123748
KJV 2Timothy 3:16-17 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." This was written, and considered to be scripture, long before the KJV was translated, so certainly the original ancient scriptures are exceptions to what you neighbor says. |

27 | Two Creation Stories? | Gen 1:1 | Parable | 41723
For an excellent detailed discussion of Creation, and how modern scientific evidence fits with the Genesis account, see The Genesis Question, by Dr. Hugh Ross. The two accounts are not two different stories. They merely emphasize different things, i.e. creation of the earth or creation of man. |
||||||
28 | how long ago was the earth made? | Gen 1:1 | Parable | 119099
Scripture tells us what science can never prove, that creation is utterly distinct from decay, which is how we measure time in the fallen world. The question "how long ago?" can be asked of the fallen world only, not about creation before the fall. That is, after creation, the world was without decay and could have existed in the same state for billions of years, before the curse introduced death and decay. All science can do is estimate how long since the decay began, and that requires an understanding of the initial conditions and the rate of decay, both of which require assumptions that may or may not hold. As a believer, I have no problem with scientific estimates that the universe is 13.7 billion years old because that estimate implies nothing about when creation occured, for with God, a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like a day. Also, this apparent age teaches us something of the meaning of the word "eternity". Which raises the point that the primary message of Genesis is that in the beginning God is there and is responsible for making the world. Likewise, the primary point of Revelation is that in the end, God is there and will see His purposes come to pass. |

29 | Plants were created, and then stars? | Gen 1:14 | Parable | 46773
See "The Genesis Question" by Dr. Hugh Ross. Therein, he explains that current scientific understanding is consistent with the Genesis account of the creation of Earth. His argument is based on the premises that the initial conditions of the earth and perspective of the observer must be understood in a way that he supports well in his treatment. To summarize his thesis: 1. the perspective of the Genesis account is that of an observer on Earth, not someone viewing the creation of the entire cosmos from some astronomical location. 2. the initial conditions of the Genesis account are not the first stages of cosmic or even planetary formation, but rather when the opacity of the atmosphere prevents anyone from seeing the stars, and not that light or the stars were created then. I don't necessarily agree with everything Dr. Ross says later in the book, but I find his treatment of Genesis 1 to be quite reasonable. Furthermore, he espouses that ultimately, there will be no conflict with our scientific understanding of creation and what the Bible teaches and we must work to remove the supposed conflict between science and faith, surely an artificial stumbling block, from the paths of those who might otherwise come to faith in Christ. 30 | Ever Doubt God's Existence? | Gen 3:1 | Parable | 78179
"But ask the animals, and they will teach you.... Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind." Job12:7-10 "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." Psalm19:1 Do not fear doubt. It shows us where we need to grow in our faith. Just as temptation is not sin, a passing thought is not a change of heart. In each, what matters is how you respond. Peace. |

31 | Ever Doubt God's Existence? | Gen 3:1 | Parable | 78790
For a comprehensive discussion of doubt, see "The Thomas Factor: Using Your Doubts to Draw Closer to God" by Gary R. Habermas. Dr. Habermas combines advanced scholarship with practical experience to address the intellectual, emotional and spiritual issues of doubt. This book may be available at your local library, but I got mine used through an on-line book dealer named after a very large south american river.... Peace, Parable |

32 | But how am I disobeying them? | Deut 5:16 | Parable | 47663
By communicating privately with anyone over the computer, you are disobeying your father. Posting notes to a forum such as this one is probably ok with him, unless you engage in extended dialogues with just one person or you start to get personal. You said his instructions were "not to talk to "men" on here". There are good reasons your father gave you these instructions and even if you don't understand them, you must live up to his trust by obeying him in this. Believe me, his reasons are sound and if you disobey, you are putting yourself in danger. Absolutely DO NOT ever meet anyone you communicate with over the computer. There are thousands of sick men on the internet who are looking to deceive you into becoming vulnerable to them so they can hurt you. They might even pose as someone who needs you to bring them to Christ. You have done your part for this 19 year old person, let the Holy Spirit do His will in him. As it is, your have no idea that this person has been truthful, right? But God knows and He accepts your prayers for that person, but He does not want you to disobey your father nor for you to meet with this person. I know this from years of experience in this world where I have seen evil work its ways by lies and deception. This is one of those situations. I encourage you to tell your parents about what is going on. |

33 | Maybe I should explain further... | Deut 5:16 | Parable | 47668
Think about it. The fact you have this question in your heart shows that something is not right. Trust that small voice inside you that tells you to LISTEN to your father. You don't need anyone to tell you how you are disobeying, you already know it but you want someone else to prove it to you. That voice you hear is the Holy Spirit trying to get your attention. That other voice, the one trying to get to disobey, is one you must not listen to. And yes, the scripture applies to you. You said "I want to bring him to Christ". Don't be fooled. The only one who can bring your friend to Christ is the Holy Spirit, not you. This is a dangerous time for you because you may fall into the sin of thinking you are able to do only what God can do. That was Adam and Eve's problem in the garden and all of us must remember that no matter how strong our faith or calling, WE are nothing. Give it to God, trust that His Will be done and honor your father with obedience to not just his words, but also his intention. |

34 | Is it just I don't wantto know the truth | Deut 5:16 | Parable | 47737
Pain can be a message that something is wrong, and it makes us attend to healing or stop whatever we're doing that hurts us. Listen to it. I think, that out of enthusiasm for the Lord, you have taken on too much. This is a sign that perhaps your efforts are being driven by your will and not His will for you. Pain can also be a sign of progress. Your view of the world is expanding rapidly, not just from knowing Christ, but also from the natural process of growing up. That's why they call them "growing pains". You can be comforted by knowing that everything God has done, He has done for you. RELAX. Trust Him to keep you safe. He has given you your parents to this purpose. Rather than work to bring email friends to Christ, let your life show the light of Christ to your family and friends. There is a famous saying "Preach the Gospel everywhere you go, and if you must, speak." This means live so others can see Christ in you, this is much more compelling than you trying to save them. After they see Christ in your life, they will be interested to know more. At that time, wait for the Holy Spirit to guide your words. Luke 12:11-12 says "...do not worry about...what you will say, 12for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say." And yes, a 19 year old is a man, at least physically. I close with this thought "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." -- Proverbs 15:22 |

36 | God blessed me! | Deut 5:16 | Parable | 47834
Teengurl, This development should be a red warning flag to you. In the spirit of telling the truth in love, you are seeing only what you want to see and you are being played. So, you disobeyed your father again by continuing to communicate with this guy? You know that nothing good can come from this. God does not call us to disobey what you know is right in order to do His will. Let me explain. So, your friend is a rapid learner, he read a little from the Bible, now he's counseling you, and now you see the Bible in a whole different perspective? I don't think so. Liars adapt to fit the needs of their victims. Open your eyes to what is really happening, not what you want to happen. Talk to someone about what is going on. Even if what you say is true, most of the time, a little knowledge is more dangerous than none. Like when first semester physics students think they can wire a house for electricity becuase they can solve the equations for the circuit. Everyone has needs, but we depend on Christ to fulfill them, not some guy who knows what to say to get you to trust him. You best be careful, what a 19 year old man wants from a 13 year old girl is not Godly or in the interests of the 13 year old girl, who by the way, is disobedient, willfull, inexperienced in the ways of the world and playing with fire. If your perspective on the Bible has changed, does it by any chance now tell you that it is OK to meet with this guy? If so, then ask him if its OK for your father to go with you. If your friend is really what he says, he should be fine with that, in fact, he would want to meet him. But if he's hiding something, he'll talk you out of that idea. Do yourself a favor, stop using the computer until you tell all this to an experienced pastor. You have no excuse, they are listed in the phone book, so call one and tell him your story. If you are obedient to Christ, you will obey your father. Stop communicating with this guy, get off the computer and reach out to the people you know in person. |

37 | I'll wait on God, there's always a way | Deut 5:16 | Parable | 47863
No, there is not ALWAYS a way. With God all things are possible, but you must accept that sometimes His answer is NO. If you don't accept His answer, you are going nowhere, ON YOUR OWN. You cannot agree and disagree at the same time. You are not being honest when you say you don't understand how you are disobedient to your parents. Not only that, you are disrespectful to the owners of this webpage who clearly require that you be 18 years old in order to be granted the PRIVILEGE of posting to this forum. Basically, you have STOLEN this privilege and broken trust with them. As Jesus said, give to Cesar what belongs to Cesar and give to God what belongs to God. In this case, you need to give the webmasters their due respect by obeying their "term thingys" and give to God your obedience to his command that you honor your parents. If you disobey your parents, you are dishonoring them and God. You don't want to call a pastor because you don't want to be accountable to anyone for your decisions, which you know are selfish and unwise. This is the kind of pride that leads to the notion that YOU are in charge. Don't wait to see what you THINK God is telling you, read the Bible and KNOW what God is telling you. But knowing is not enough. You must have faith and that faith will bear fruit. Jesus explains it quite simply: "if you love me, you will obey my commandments". If you don't like these terms, that's too bad. No one ever said being a Christian was easy. Finally, don't do it. You know what I'm talking about. Just don't. You're wrong. Let it go and don't pick it up again. |

38 | Was David up? | 2 Sam 11:2 | Parable | 84530
I don't believe scripture supports imparting this motive to Bathsheba. Clearly, she was bathing after David's normal bedtime. Also, to see Bathsheba, David needed to be on the roof of his house. Then David sent for her, and she responded to his summons. Then David slept with her. This story is all about David and his choices. The scriptures hold David accountable for his actions, not that he was the victim of a setup. "2One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?" 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her." |

39 | Is satan omni-present? | Job 1:1 | Parable | 100318
No. Satan is not omnipresent. In the beginning of Job, he is clearly presented as having been wandering the earth. This does not mean that the enemy does not have his agents stationed in many places nor that Satan cannot travel freely. However, Christ has defeated Satan and death, so the work of evil in the world is a last ditch effort to cause damage before the final closure of history when Jesus returns. Regarding our flesh, until we are resurrected, we will have to struggle with our carnal nature. |

40 | addicted to porn-help | Psalm | Parable | 109364
The issue with pornography is of course lust, which has at least two spiritual aspects. The most obvious is that indulging in pornography reduces others to physical objects that you use to gratify your carnal desires. This is not loving them. The other is a diminished understanding of yourself as a child of God and this is not loving God, in light of all He has done for you to make it possible for you to have a holy relationship with Him. The next time you are tempted, pray for God to show you the way out, which He promises to provide. You cannot escape on your own strength or willpower. You must depend on God to help you with this. I suggest also that you reflect on the people who have been used to produce the pornography, for they are loved by God as much as you are. Remember that they are people in need of Him and in need of your compassion, not your exploitation. Also, think about those who profit from this "industry". Your addiction supports all the wickedness that goes into producing porn, which leads others into greater and greater sin and financially rewards those who mock our Lord and use the creatures made in His image for their own selfish gain. |
