21 | Does God Need us like we need Him? | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231233
I think your friend misunderstands the whole concept of God and His Whole World. I can only suggest her re-reading of His Majestic Handiwork, culminating in the Creation of Mankind, including both men and women, Genesis 1 and 2. I'm thinking all this stuff about Evolution and Theistic Evolution is whittling away at the Faith of many of our fellow christians. There are many, many websites I might suggest to you. Just insert key words like Evidences of Christianity and Creationism into your Search Engine and you'll find them. Brouse around and find several articles you like, print them for her. With most of these websites, you can even submit your inquiries and get specific answers and referrals to articles addressing your concerns. On the subject of Authority, I would start out by referring your friend to the last section of Romans, Chapter 1. There Paul does a masterful job of warning the people in Rome of what God would do as a result of their wickedness and reminds them of just Who God is and His Authority. It sounds like Mr. Haggin doesn't have a clue as to what he's talking about. Another person had a serious problem with the Authority of God. His name was Pharaoh and we all know how he turned out, starting at Exodus 5. We'll be praying for both you and your friend. Go with God in all His Ways. Bill |

In addition to Steve's good answer, I can think of a couple more verses, such as... Acts 5:40 And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. 42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ. James 5:13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Rom 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 1 Cor 13:4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 2 Cor 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ. 6 Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. 7 And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation. There are others but the bottom line is our suffering on this earth is but a "blink of the eye" compared to our Destination, our Home in Heaven. We must keep our focus on our Lord as Peter discovered while walking on water... Matt 14:28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” Also James assures us of the brevity of our sojourn here on earth in... James 4:14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. So just keep on keeping on and God will Bless you; Go with God in all His Ways. Bill |

24 | What does the bible say what happens to | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231207
Brad's Post is good solid Guidance but I like to remember Jesus' story in... John 8:2 Now early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them. 3 Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?” 6 This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear. 7 So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” 8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” Now of course adultrey is sin and worthy of condemnation but don't you see, we're ALL in that same trap. We've ALL sinned and we continue to sin every day of our lives and none of us can measure up to God's Perfect Standard set by His Son. We must rely on His Grace and Mercy and share the Good News with our friends and neighbors. We as human creatures see the many different sins in this world at different levels of "dastardly deeds" with some worse than others and of course that's normal. But we need to grow and mature and see things as God sees them and become repugnent to the sins in our own lives. God sees ALL sins as being alike; they all keep us separated from Him. James 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. Instead of dwelling on the sins of each other, let's dwell on the good stuff we have Christ Jesus like Paul encourages us in... Phil4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you. Hope this helps; Go with God in all His Ways, Bill |

26 | Is drinking and smoking pot allowed | Rom 14:23 | Bill Richardson | 231205
This thread of discussions has two main points as I understand it. 1) The first one is that all of us want to go to Heaven and therefore we should avoid those activities that are clearly considered sins. In those situations that are questionable, it's always better to go with one's conscience and NOT do anything IF you have doubts about it. After all we do want to assure ourselves of going to Heaven, right? True enough it's drunkeness that's condemned in the Bible and not drinking. BUT if your family finds out that you're now a drinker, they will most likely try to get you to drink more and more and the alcohol will control you instead of your God. Just some advice; I've seen what one drink can do to an individual and his family. That's why I decided some years ago to be a "tee-totaler." No, it's not required, it's a judgement call everyone has to make in their lives as they mature in their walk with God. 2) Now on the matter of marriage, I have to say it's always best to come to the Lord and get His Blessing on our marriage. The best way to do that is after confirming both spouses to be are going to be an asset to the other in getting both to Heaven. If you're both looking up to God for His Guidance in "ALL things pertaining to Godliness," 2 Pet 1:3-4, then you'll have less time for arguing and what not. So Justme makes a good point. Such a couple should get to know one another and confirm that their spouse truly is a person dedicated to God and foremost and to the spouse second. (A true man of God should be a real friend, interested in confirming this before marriying such a couple.) Then all the other priorities will fall into place. It's difficult to come up with scripture in direct support other than those above. But I'm convinced this advice is quite sound as I'm enjoying my first and only marriage after 30 plus years. Maybe this passage... 2 Cor 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. We've had our stuggles as we're both head-strong and stubborn but I'm convinced she's the perfect one sent to me by God Himself as she does assist in keeping on the "straight and narrow." I can only wish God's Richest Blessings in your life and I'd recommend if you're going to drink, do it in moderation WITH your spouse and NOT your buddies. Why? That's part of how christians behave. After all, we are God's people as cited by Peter in... 1 Pet 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; Believe me, people of the world are watching us, you and me and all other christians to see if we're the real thing "set-apart" for our God. 27 | why you shouldn't go to casinos | Rom 14:23 | Bill Richardson | 231204
I'm thinking the big issue with this area is whether or not gambling or going to casinos gets in between you and your God as a christian. My wife and I go a casino occasionally and I just consider whatever small amount of money I win or lose in such a place to be entertainment. I have witnessed some of my friends who would go and drop their entire paycheck which would mean their family went without food and left some bills unpaid. So the scripture below comes to mind... 1 Tim 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. Mark's citation of the verse above at the top of this post is right on target. That basic principle must be applied to everything we do as christians. Another verse that applies... Col 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. I realize these verses seem to cover a lot of ground in a wide specturm of application. But you see, that's what our Lord Wants. He Wants our whole hearts, our whole being to be dedicated to him. He said it best in... Mark 12:30 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. So it all boils down, to who you're going to choose: Going to casinos or your Lord and Saviour. Is it really that serious? IF this casino is in between you and your God, it's just another form of idol and you know how He Feels about that. We'll be praying for you and hoping for the best. Hope this helps; Go with God in all His Ways, Bill |

34 | When is forgiveness not necessary? | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231182
In support of Doc's answer, God is very clear on this matter. IF we hope to get forgiveness for our sins, we MUST be just as willing to forgive others. Jesus relayed this kind of sentiment in several places like His Model Prayer... Lk 11:4 And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.” His Parable of the debtor in prison... Matt 18:21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. 23 Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made. 26 The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, ‘Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ 27 Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. 28 “But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down at his feet[d] and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ 30 And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt. 31 So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done. 32 Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. 33 Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’ 34 And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. 35 “So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.” Yes, this was a completely new teaching from that of the Law of Moses, with "eye for an eye and tooth for tooth." We are even expected to forgive our enemies. Yeah, I agree tough to do, especailly in our modern world. So in answer to your question, I'm afraid if you truly want to go to Heaven, it's very clear as to what we all must do. Hope this helps; Go with God in all His Ways, Bill |

35 | No last names of people - why not? | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231179
Just thought I'd share as I just head this lecture just a few months ago and it made a lot of sense. In the growth of our world from the Biblical perspective of about six thousand years, we must remember large cities like you and I are used to did not exist. For a very long time, practically no one lived in cities; almost everyone lived on a farm where almost every residence and every person was self-sufficient so there wasn't a lot of visiting, just a lot of work to get by. Then the age of tools came along and specialists were needed to maintain them, refine them and make them better. Now we're talking about cities maybe consisting of a couple hundred people. It was not practical to have more than maybe two blacksmiths or more than two stores with special wares to support such a small number of people. The total number of farmers in the surrounding areas couldn't support a bunch of toolmakers so the other sons of the blacksmith would move on to another town. Now as technology grew and more and more moved to town, it would grow in diversity, goods and services, ie banks and specialty shops, etc. In the small towns the two blacksmiths would be known as Mike and Joe. The shopowners Jeff and John. They were all known by the first name and then "of Town X." This worked for quite a while. But when there's so many of a given profession, it becomes a little more difficult to keep up with them, then another name becomes practical. Now when did this become the norm? Who knows but it seems to have taken a long while. Another factor keeping the growth slow. Very few could afford a horse with which to go to town. Fewer still could afford enough to own their own tools and quite possibly, the land owner might go out and hire his own blacksmith for tool maintenance. The point is the growth of towns and the use of multiple names was a very slow process. There's probably many other unknown factors keeping this growth slow, ie fear of towns or dislike by the landowners, lust for maintaining power. Hope this helps; Go with God in all His Ways, Bill |

36 | sins forgiven, what about new sins? | 1 John 1:9 | Bill Richardson | 231178
I've been taught that as human beings, we're all weak and sinful creatures. First we have to succeed in avoiding "the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life," 1 John 2:16 which is incredibly difficult to do. Then another very difficult weakness of ours as humans, we can't possibly match Jesus in His Life as described in... James 4:17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. We can't possibly do every little good thing of we which we could think to do. We simply don't have the energy or the self-discipline but we also just choose NOT to do it. We are a people of convenience; I'll admit it as I am this way. We like our routines and really don't want to go out of our way looking for new and fresh opportunities to "do good." Also Paul tells us in... Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all[h] who believe. For there is no difference; 23 FOR ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. What are we to do with this conundrum, a seemingly almost impossible task imposed on us by our Lord? We do the best we can; we set the best kind of example around our co-workers, avoid those obvious sins above and go home to our family as that too is a responsibility charged to us by God in... 1 Tim 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. Finally we just got to go to bed and give over all our inadequacies, cares and frustrations to our God in prayer. I like to do this at night, wake up the following morning and start fresh, resolving to do the best we can in devoting ourselves to imitating His Son, 1 Cor 11:1. This is all part of the Process we call Grace, bestowed on us by our Lord. He gives us that kind of comfort as long as we're maintaining that relationship as cited in... 1 John 1:5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. So we must maintain a proper attitude of gratitude instead of pride and not do more sinning to bring on more Grace. That we must not do... Rom 1:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. I hope this helps; Go with God in all His Ways, Bill |

37 | will all christians go to heaven | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231169
I'm thinking the most important Guidance in this area is from Peter in... 2 Pet 2:18 For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. 19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. 20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,” and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.” Other examples from John in... 3 John 1:9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us. 10 Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church. 11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God. It's such a sad end for a christian to turn away from the Lord and go back to the world of darkness, and eventually Hell itself. Some christians get caught up in being to full of themselves and instead of being examples following Christ, they choose someone else and get themselves lost like that of Diotrephes above. 38 | Exo 29-30 bread w/o yeast? | Ex 13:9 | Bill Richardson | 231167
Welcome to the Bible Forum. You must be new to Jewish History. Generally, unleavened bread was a custom started long ago indicating devotion to God. I looked and the very first mention of this kind of bread is in Gen 19 with Lot's meal with angels in Sodom before its destruction. So it seems this custom could have possibly been done to simply rush the meal as it takes a little while for leavened bread to rise. But the most memorable reason for most is from... Ex 13:3 And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten. 4 On this day you are going out, in the month Abib. 5 And it shall be, when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, which He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall keep this service in this month. 6 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the Lord. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days. And no leavened bread shall be seen among you, nor shall leaven be seen among you in all your quarters. 8 And you shall tell your son in that day, saying, ‘This is done because of what the Lord did for me when I came up from Egypt.’ 9 It shall be as a sign to you on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the Lord’s law may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You shall therefore keep this ordinance in its season from year to year. And of course it sets the precedent for us as christians when we observe and partake of the Communion or the Lord's Supper as described in... Matt 26:26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” Now of course, the Lord and His disciples started this meal as their traditional Passover Meal and a person could ask why didn't Jesus do something different. But I think it's was a good thing that He was following the Pattern from His Father's preference for unleavened bread. It's something that gives us human beings an additional reason to pause and think about what we observing in the Lord's Supper, His being the Ultimate Sacrifice. Remember we're not doing this for us or any other reason as thought by man. We're following God's Commands because He's God and that's the Pattern He set for us. 39 | Why is wisdom referred to as HER? | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231165
In addition to these good answers, I'm thinking a big reason for thinking of wisdom as feminine, especially for us men is the elusive quality of wisdom. I know she has eluded me all of my life except when I married my wife. Prov 2:1 My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, 2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; 3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, 4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; 5 Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, And find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; At least, it's been my experience that knowledge comes somewhat easy. One has to work a little harder to gain understanding, especailly some of the complexities of life, you know the conundrums. But most elusive of all is wisdom. Even Solomon had a little difficulty applying wisdom to his own life. So we pursue wisdom to the end of our days and count ourselves Blessed to die in the Lord with His Name on our lips. Believe me, I know. I've had my "brush with death" and it was just a bit premature. Makes one take a "pause for the cause," and slow down a bit to appreciate life. 40 | What do we learn from praying | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231162
In addition to all the good answers you've received, I can't help but think back to the Words of our Lord... Matt 6:6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 “Therefore do not be like them. FOR YOUR FATHER KNOWS THE THINGS YOU HAVE NEED OF BEFORE YOU ASK HIM. So many come up with the response: "If God knows what I need, why should I pray about it?" Yeah, I agree great immaturity but still to some extent, the question deserves an answer. I've always been taught that by praying to our God, it helps us to acutally focus our mind on our needs and distinquish those from our wants. Thus we see in so many instances, God does take care of our needs. Secondly if we're in constant prayer as Jesus modeled for us and Paul encourages us, then we'll establish a regular dialouge with our Father just like our earthly parents love to hear from us. Then we know to go to God's Word, at least daily and see the answers to our prayers for there truly is "nothing new under the sun," Ecc 1:8 All things are full of labor; Man cannot express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor the ear filled with hearing. 9 That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there anything of which it may be said, “See, this is new”? It has already been in ancient times before us. 11 There is no remembrance of former things, Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come By those who will come after.
